1.580386 C.KRONE COMPRESSION TESTER FOR COMBUSTION ENGINES Filed NOV, 4, 1925 atented Apr. 13, 1923.
CHARLES KRONE, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
COMPRESSION TESTER FOR COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Application filed November To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1', CHARLES KRONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa. have invented a certain new and useful Compression Tester for Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a compression tester for combustion engines of simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive construction.
More particularly, my invention relates to a compression tester adapted to be positioned upon an automobile engine block above the cylinder opening therein, and secured to the engine block wherein the compression within the cylinder may be tested.
Still a further object is to provide adjustable means of connection between the compression tester and the engine block adapting it for use in connection with various cylinders regardless of the position of the cylinder within the engine block.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and'illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figurel is a top, plan view of my improved compression tester, parts being broken away and shown in section to better illustrate the construction thereof.
Figure 2 is a side view, parts shown in section illustrating my compression tester secured to an engine block over a cylinder opening.
Figure 3 is a detail, sectional view through the lower edge of the tester showing the gasket construction used therein; and
Figure 1 is a detail, sectional view of the inlet valve for the tester.
In the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral to indicate an ordinary engine block provided with acylinder opening 11 and a piston 12 therein.
The engine block 10 is ordinarily pro vided with a number of screw threaded openings 13, which are used to receive the 4, 1925. Serial No. 66,736.
bolts which anchor the engine head to the engine block proper.
My improved compression tester comprises a casting or fitting 14 which is formed with a cylinder opening 15 of substantially the same size as the cylinder opening 11, and also substantially the same area as the opening ordinarily provided in the engine head.
The casing 14 above the cylinder 15 is formed with a spider member 16 arranged with a cover 17 whereby there is formed substantially triangular. shaped notches 18. The notches 18 are each designed to receive an elongated link 19. Each link19 is connected to the casting 1 1 by machine screws 20 which are free to rotate within openings 21 formed in the cover 17.
The machine screws 20 extend into th links 19 as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings. Each link 19 is formed with an elongated slot 22 which permits the bolts 23 used for fastening the tester to the engine block to be slid toward or from the tester proper so that the bolts 23 may be positioned to coact with the screw threaded openmgs 13 in the engine block.
The links .19 are free to swing between any two walls of the spider member16, thus permitting greater adjustment.
One of the links 19 is'shown in dotted lines in an adjusted position in Figure 1 of the drawings.
The lower edge of the casting 14, which is designedto rest upon the engine block 10 is formed with a groove 24; which receives a bushing or packing 25.
' 'lhecasting 14 is formed with a central opening 26 which is screw threaded at its upper end for permitting a pressure gauge 27 to be connected therewith.
An inlet valve fitting 28 is mounted in the side of the casting 1a and is in comunication with the cylinder opening 15 through the passage way 29.
The valve fitting 28 includes a valve seat opening 30 adapted to receive a ball normally held in seated position by a spring 32. The tension on the spring 32 may be varied by adjusting av sleeve within the fitting 28.
The details of the inlet valve are clearly shown in Figure 4- of the drawings.
lVashers 34: may be interposed between the head of the bolts 23 and the links 19 if necessary.
Practical operation.
The practical operation of my compression tester includes the removal of the engine head from the block 10 and positioning the casting or fitting l i over the cylinder opening 11. The links 19 may then be swung around to such position where the bolts 23 will register with the screw threaded openings 18 ordinarily provided in the block 10.
hen the bolts 23 are tightened so that a positive connection is had between the member 1a and the engine block 10, then the compression tester is ready for operation.
lVhen the piston 12 is moved in a down direction the ball 31 in the valve 28 will be unseated for permitting air to pass into the cylinder 11.
When the piston 12 is moved in an upward direction, the ball 31 will be seated and the pressure or compression within the cylinder 11 will then cause the gauge 27 to register such compression.
By use of a compression tester of the kind shown in my drawings, I am able to test the compression of each cylinder and can readily find any faulty cylinder.
My compression tester saves to a great extent the labor sometimes necessary to remove the engine head after it has once been replaced in position after work has been done on the pistons 12.
lVith my device the test so far as corn pression is concerned may be made without the necessity of putting the entire engine head upon the block'and then testing the compression.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of my invention, without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims, any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with an engine block having a cylinder opening therein, of a compression tester comprising a member adapted to fit over the cylinder opening in the engine block, means for connecting said member with the engine bloc-k, an inlet valve in said member in communication with the cylinder opening and a gauge on said member adapted to register the compression within said cylinder opening.
2. In combination with an engine block having a cylinder opening therein, of a compression tester comprising a member adapted to fit over the cylinder opening in the engine block, means for connecting said member with the engine block, said means comprising links extending radially from said member having slots therein and bolts extending through said slots for connection with the engine block, an inlet valve in said member in comn-runication with the cylinder opening and a gauge 011 said member adapted to register the compression within said cylinder opening.
3. In combination with an engine block having a cylinder opening therein, of a compression tester comprising a member adapted to fit over the cylinder opening in the engine block, means for connecting said member with the engine block, same means comprising links extending radially from said member having slots therein and bolts extending through said slots for connection with the engine block, said links being pivotally connected with said member, an inlet valve in said member in communication with the cylinder opening and a gauge on said member adapted to register the compression with said cylinder opening.
4:. In combination with an engine block having a cylinder opening therein, of a con'ipression tester comprising a member adapted to fit over the cylinder opening in the engine block, said member having a groove formed in its lower edge, a gasket adapted to fit in said groove, means for connecting said member with the engine block, said means comprising link e:\tend ing adially from said member having slots therein and bolts extending through said slots for connection with the engine block, said links being pivotally connected with said member, an inlet valve in said member in communication with the cylinder opening and a gauge on said member adapted to register the compression within said cylinder opening.
5. A compression tester comprising a member having an opening therein of substantially the same area as the opening in an engine head, said member being adapted to fit over a cylinder opening in an engine block, means for maintaining the position of said member relative to the engine block, said means including a. plurality of links formed with elongated slots, bolts extending through said slots and adapted to coact with screw threaded openings formed in the engine block, an inlet valve in said member in commun' ration with the opening formed therein and a compression gauge mounted between said member.
