Description

Patented pr. 6, 1926.
UNITED sTA'TEs i ALBERT BANDALL vwnnns, orsLINEonD MANOR, ENGLAND.
IY'AVING IBLO CK.
Application med October 5, 1925. smal nofeasss.
ToaZZ wlwm it may concern: v p
Be it known that I, VALBERT RANDALL lVELLs, asubject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Slinfold Manor, in the county' of Sussex, England, have invented certain new and usefulI Improvement-sin Paving Blocks, of which the following is a speoification.
This invention relates.. to .paving blocks and has for its objects to provide such devices which are self setting, require no jointi ing, can be lifted from position at will and which have non-slippingwearing surfaces.
In general paving blocks made according to the invention areL manufactured of any material suitable for paving and comprise a body having an upper wearing surface the sides being formed with alternate projections and recesses so arranged that when in position the projections on one block come in the recesses of a number of adjacent and simlarly Shaped blocks. Each block is formed with a number of projecting feet upon which it stands, suitable padding material preferably being located beneath the feet and similar padding material being disposed between the projections of one block and the recesses of adjacent blocks. A key hole is provided at the centre of each block extending therethrough and the wearing surface is formed With concentric ridges or beads to prevent slipping the beads being discontinuous where required to form drainage grooves.
A preferredform of paving block made according to the invention is shewn on the drawing in which Fig. l is a plan view of a block with a number of adjacent and similar blocks.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the line 2-2 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section of vthe surface on the line 3-3 Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation on the line 4-4 Fig. 1 and Fg. 5 is a perspective view to a smaller scale shewing the under side -of the block.
In the drawing the body of the block as shewn has a substantially cylindrical centre portion with three lateralprojecting portions at equiangular distances apart, forining between them three recessed or re-entrant portions. i
Each block has six feet 6 projecting from the bottom thereof and each foot has a pad 7 attached to it upon which it stands. Other pads 8 are inserted upon three sides of each V.block which. come into contact w-ith unpadded portions of-adjacent blocks as shewn in Fig. V1. The p-ads are .Zpreferably 'made of material such as bituminous felt.
Ity will be seen therefore that eaclrblock makes six padded Contacts with the surface on which it stands and six padded Contacts with the six,y surrounding and adjacent blocks. The block is thus held immovably interlocked, all pressureiowing to the particular form of the blocks tending to keep .their relative positions exactly true.
The parts 7 and 8 are preferably of bituminous felt or other similar or suitable material. A i
9 is a key hole passing through the centre of each block by which it can be lifted and the surface of each block is beaded concentrically as shewn at 10 to form a nonslipping surface. The beads are discontinuous,
and crossed by drainage grooves 11, see Figs.
l and 3, which yopen into the key hole 9 or the space between the blocks bounded by three adjacent projecting portions. k VVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of Ameriv ca 1stli A paving block comprising a body having an upper wearing surface, a number of feet projecting from the under surface of the body, pads of a material such as bituminous felt beneath the said feet, alternate lateral projections and recesses for co-operation with recesses and projections respectvely of similar surrounding and adjacent blocks, pads of a material such as bitumi-v nous felt upon alternate side faces, and a key hole extendlng from the upper wearing surface to the under surface for the purposes set forth.
2. A paving block comprising a body having an upper Vwearing surface, a number of feet projecting from the under surface of the body, pads of a material such as bitumivnous felt beneath the saidV feet, alternate lateral projections and recesses for co-operation with recesses and projections respectively of similar surrounding. and adjacent blocks, pads of a material such as bituminous felt upon alternate side faces, a key hole extending from the upper wearing surface to the under surface and beadings formed in the upper wearing surface for the purposes set forth.
3. A paving block comprsing a body having an upper wearing surface, a number of feet projecting from the under surface .of the body, pads of a material such as bituininous felt beneath the said feet, alternate lateral projections and recesse fr cooperation with reoesses and Iprojeotions respeetively of similar surrounding and adjacent blocks, pads of a material such as b'iturninous 'feltupon alternate side faces, a key hole eX- ten'ding from the upper wearing surf-aceto the under surfe and disc'ontinuous beadiigs formed in the upper wearing' surface for the purposes st frt-h. i
4. A paiiingz blo'e'k eoinprsing body formed fri a b'stanti-ally oylidi'ical centre portion iif'it-l three similar* later'al projectingfI p port-ions' at qiii-angular dis'- taiices apartL leayiiig' between tlieii three similar lateral recessed portions, adapted to receive proje'otiiig portons, o'f similar surrounding and adjacent blocks, the said body having an upper wearing surface, a number of feet projeeting from the under surface of the body, pads of a material' such as bituminous felt beneath the said feet, pads of La, material .such as bituininous felt upon alternate side faces, a key hole extending from the upper wearing surface to the under surface, concentric dscntinuous beadirs formed in the upper wearing surface around the opening to the key hole and drainage groove's between the discontinuous beadings for, the purposes set fort-h.
In witnesswhereof I afiix iny signature.
LBERT RANDALL lVELLS.
