SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 637,437, dated November 21, 1899,

the edges of the plate around the holes up-' ward and outward,and then by filling the holes with lead flush with the bottom of the plate and level with topof turned-up edges. The tread-plate thus obtained,havin g disks of lead elevated above the body of the plate and held firmly in position by the steel rim formed by the turned-up edges of the plate, acts as a safeguard against slipping and may be fastened to the surface of stair treads, platforms, sidewalks, carriage steps, or other places Where a firm footing is desired.
Figure l is a plan View of a portion of a tread-plate. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken at line A Bof Fig. 1 and shows the form into which the edges of the plate are pressed up, as shown at O, and the lead filling at D.
I am aware that the combination of lead and iron or steel has been used for this purpose, and I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly.

The combination of a plate of iron or steel perforated and pressed into shape and filled with lead, as herein described and for the purposes specified.
