IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR ROLLING SHOT.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,995, dated December 22, 1874; application filed October 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. A. L. KIRK, of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Making Shot; and I do hereby declare that the :following is a full and exact description of the' same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a broken sectional view of the end, showing the eccentricity of the roll and shot introduced. Fig. 3 is a broken sectional view of the opposite end, showing the shot of different sizes perfected.
The object of my invention is to reduce cubical pieces of metal or any irregular forms into spherical shape. I accomplish this by subjecting the pieces of metal, which may be cut from square bars, to the action of a peculiarly-formed roller workin g in a longitudinallyformed concave.
In the accompanying dra wing, the roller A is made to revolve, as indicated by the arrow, and the blanks or cubes are fed in between the concave B and roller A. The concave is ad- Ijustable, and the cubical pieces of metal are caused to revolve as the roller act-s upon them and compresses their corners, which are caught by the grooves in the roller and concave. rlhe longitudinal inclination of the machine will cause the pieces of metal to partake of a diagonal motion while being revolved by the roller A. As the partially-formed shot are pressed between the two surfaces and are reduced they will, by their gravity, descend, and, at the same time, progress toward the lower end of the machine, where the surfaces of the concave and roller are without grooves and smooth, which will give the shot a true spherical form and smooth surface before being discharged. In addition to the grooves, as mentioned in the foregoing, and shown in Fig. l, are eccentric or cam surfaces extending an equal distance on each side of the grooves. The degree of eccentricity is made to vary to suit the size of cubes to be rounded, and made to terminate or merge into a true cylinder at about hal f-Iyay the length of the roll.
To give increased capacity to the machine the above-mentioned variation in the form of the surface of the roll may be made to extend through a set of two or more rolls; or, in plainer words, two or more of the herein-described machines may be used, having the roll of the first eccentric and grooved throughout, that of the next only partially so, and that ot' the third entirely smooth and cylindrical.
The general surfaces of the roll and concave correspond, with the exception that the radius of the are of the concave is as much larger than the radius of the roll as the diameter of the shot being worked. The space between the roll and concave is, by adjustment, made to lessen gradually toward the bottom of the concave, which makes it possible to work several different sizes of shot at the same time, and also serves to assort the different sizes where they issue at the lower end of the machine.
Another important featnre in the graduallyreducing space between the roller and concave is that, by their gravity, the shot being rounded, will fall in this lessening-space to a point equal to their minimum diameter, and in the act of being rolled from this position be reduced to a uniform diameter. This rolling action, often repeated, produces of the shot being worked true spheres, which will no longer fall toward the bottom of the concave, but, owing to the inclination of the machine, will find their way to the end of the roller and be discharged into suitable receptacles.
