L. ROTHSCHILD ET AL COMBINATION BEDSIDE CABINET AND TABLE Filed Jan. 0 1925 INVENTORS LEO/V IFOTMSCH/LP JOH/ g M L/PM) TIORNEY Patented Apr. 6, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATsNT oFFic LEON ROTHSCHILI) AND JOHN M. LIPTAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS 'TO HOS- PITAL IMPORT CORPORATION, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
Application filed January 10, 1925. Serial No. 1,550.
To all whom it may concern:
and JOHN M. LIPTAY, citizens of the United States of America, residing at New York city, county and State of New York,haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Bedside Cabinetsand Tables, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention' relates to a combination bedside cabinet and table and in particular to one which is adapted for use in hospitals or the like where compactness of various furniture accessories is very desirable;
A particular object of the invention is to provide a bedside cabinet and table, the latter portion of which can be folded up when not in use and which can be used for various purposes such as a dressing table in emergency rooms or as a general utility table in wards or private hospital rooms.
A further object of the invention is to provide a table which can be readily extended for use or quickly folded up, and one which can be easily adjusted for height or quickly lowered with a minimum of manual effort.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cabinet having an overhanging table, the cabinet being provided with legs which afford suflicient base length to prevent overturning or tilting of the cabinet when a weight is placed upon the table.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a cabinet having an overhanging table readily removable from said cabinet.
Referring to the drawing wherein we have shown a preferred embodiment of our invention;
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of our combination bedside cabinet and table, the table portion being shown extended in the position which it would normally occupy if being used.
Figure 2 is a view in elevation of the front side of the cabinet, the table portion thereof being folded up.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of the end of the cabinet showing the table dropping lever and its associated parts.
Figure 4 is an enlarged section taken 011 the line H of Figure 1 showing the table lowering device in detail.
Referring to the drawingvin detail, 5 indicates generally a cabinet, which may be made up of any material, for instance white enamelled metal, which may be readily cleansed and maintained in sanitary condition and comprises the end walls 6, bottom 7 and top 8, the back of the cabinet being constructed of lattice work 9 to allow for thorough ventilation. p
The cabinet may be provided interiorly with a latticed shelf 10, and a drawer 11, the
closure for the cabinet comprising the usual hinged door 12. The cabinet is supported on the straight legs 18 and extended legs 14:, the latter of which extend in the same direction as the table, hereinafter described, and being arranged to greatly increase the base area so that any weight placed on the table will be prevented from tilting the cabinet.
At the edges of the end wall 6 and adjacent the top of the cabinet, we provise two oppositely disposed guides 15 in which are slidably retained the side pieces 16 of the table frame, the table 17 itself being provided with two extension arms 18 which are pivoted as at 19 at their ends, to'the upper mostpart of the side pieces 16, so that the table may be swung up or down relatively to the cabinet. The side pieces 16 are joined at their lower ends through the medium of a cross bar 20 which carries at its center a depending rod 21. This rod passes v through the horizontally disposed hinged portion 22 of a bracket 28, the latter being suitably fixed to the side of the cabinet.
The hinged portion 22 is provided with an opening 2 1 through which passes the rod 21, the opening being slightly larger than the diameter of the rod. This difference in size, as illustrated in Figure 4, allows the rod to have free passage through the opening when the hinged portion 22 is in horizontal position, but, when it is disposed at an angle, the edges of the opening engage the opposite side of the rod frictionally and prevent its passage therethrough.
In order to raise or lower the locking plate, or hinged portion 22 to allow for raising or lowering of the table, we provide a foot'lever 25 pivoted to the cabinet as at 26 and having an extended arm 27, the end of which underlies theplate 22 and is bent to form a hook portion 28 around the rod 21, but spaced therefrom, so that the free end of the lever arm 27 will not be accidentally displaced.
It is evident that the pressure exerted downwardly on the hinged plate 22 by the rod 21 will keep the foot lever in position, the latter being pivoted at a point which will insure the normal upward pressure of the free end of the arm 27.
In order to hold the table in horizontal position we provide a V-shaped brace 29 the ends of the legs of which are pivoted in the side pieces 16 below the guides 15 as at 80, while the free end 31 of the brace s disposed in a. slot 32 formed in a strip 33 which is attached at its ends to the underside of the table 17 and extends longitudinally of the center thereof. The upper side of the strip near the inner end of the table is pro vided with a cut-out or notch 34 which opens into the slot 32, so that the free end 31 of the brace 29 may engage in said notch when the table is drawn up to horizontal position, said brace holding the table in extended position over a bed alongside of which the cabinet is adapted to be placed.
It is evident therefore that we have provided a combined bedside cabinet and table, the latter part of which may be quickly adjusted to position and which, when opened it too high, can by a touch of the foot on v the lever 25, be properly adjusted to the dc sired height, while the cabinet can be used to hold all of the accessories necessary in sick rooms or dressing rooms of hospitals or in any place where a general utility table of this character may be employed.
Having described our invention what we claim is 1. The combination with a cabinet some of the legs of which are extended beyond the base line of the cabinet, of a table member slidably associated with the cabinet and adapted to be readily removable therefrom,-
a hinged locking member through which passes a rod depending from said table member, said locking member when in horizontal position being adapted to unlock said table member to permit the same to have sliding movement relative to the cabinet and means for op rating said locking member.
2. The combination with a cabinet, of a frame associated therewith vertically thereof, a table pivoted on said frame and adapted to fold against the side of the cabinet and adapted to be readily removed therefrom, a hinged locking memher on said frame, an extension on the frame passing through said member, the latter when disposed in angular position being adapted to frictionally hold said extension, and a footlever for raising said locking member to horizontal position whereby the frame may have downward sliding movement.
3. The combination with a cabinet adapted for bedside use, of a frame, guides on said cabinet through which said frame is adapted to have sliding movement, a table pivoted in said frame, said table and frame adapted to be readily removable from said cabinet, a foldable bracket extending from the frame to the table, a vertically disposed rod in said frame, a locking plate on said cabinet having an opening therein through which said rod is adapted to pass, a lever pivoted on the cabinet and adapted to raise and lower said locking plate whereby the table can be frictionally locked at any height relative to said cabinet.
