IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE WAGON-TOPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,975, dated December 22, 1874; application filed September 16, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, EDWARD M. SAUNDEEs,

. of Saugus, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagons; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a transverse section, of a wagon provided with my invention. Fig. 5 is an underside view, and Fig. 6 a longitudinal section, of the cover with its bonnet and end fastening- Fig. 7 is a side view of one of the bows as open, and Fig. 8 is an edge view of it as closed, its position when placed in the receiver, and on the cross-bars underneath the wagon-body, being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. Fig. 9 is a top view, and Fig. 10 an edge view, of the front bow and its bonnetsupporter, as closed for being packed underneath the wagon-body.

My invention is to enable a wagon-body to be readily tted with a cover capable, with its supports, of being packed in a suitable receiver combined with and arranged underneath the wagon-body, and my said invention has reference mainly to the cover and its supports.

In the drawings, A denotes a wagon-body provided on each of its opposite sides with two series of sockets, a a a a, b b b b, as usual, to receive and sustain a series of bows, B B B B, for supporting a cover, O. Each of the said bows I construct in four sections or bars, c o d d. The two smaller bars d d are Vconnected to the bars c c by rule-joints, as shown at e e, such bars d d at their inner ends being joined by two links, f f, pivoted to them, the whole being so that such bars may be brought into positions, as shown in Figs. 4 and 7, or folded together, as represented in Fig. 8. With the front bow B so made I combine a folding b011- net-supporter, D, composed of four bars, g g h h. -The two bars g g are connected to the bars h h by rule-joints or hinges, and the two latter bars are connected together by two links, 1l z', pivoted to them, all being arranged as represented. Furthermore, the bars g g are pivoted to the bars o c of the bow just beneath two stops, Z l, projecting from the said bars o c of the front bow in manner as shown. These stops limit the upward movement of the bonnet-supporter, or hold it in position, as shown in Fig. 1. The Wagon-body I provide with a box or bow receiver, E, arranged underneath it and fixed to it, and provided with an opening and door thereto, as shown at m. ceiver E is open at its front, as shown at a, in order that a bow when folded may be passed into the receiver at its rear, and extended out of it and upon the cross-bars o p of the wagonframe, all being as shown by dotted lines, the folded-down parts of each bow being within the receiver, which may or should be large enough to carry the cover when in a folded state. The said cover I make with a bonnet, F, to project from its front end, and lap around and upon the folding bonnet-supporter of the front bow, and I provide such cover at its ends with main and branch straps, arranged as represented, the main straps being shown at r, and the branch straps at S. Each of the main straps at one end of the cover I provide with a buckle, t. The cover at its sides I provide with loops or button-holed short-straps u to button upon knobs or hooks c o projecting from the carriage-body. After the cover may have been placed on the bows, the middle main straps are to be buckled together, and each pair of side main straps should also be buckled together, the whole being so as to draw the cover and bonnet closely upon the bows. After this the cover at its edges may be buttoned down to the body of the wagon. The cover also has a back fly, G, extended from it, as shown, it being to close the wagon at its rear.

I claim as my invention, as follows:

1. The folding bow B, composed of the four bars o c d d linked, arranged, and hinged together, as specified.

2. The cover provided with the hanged bonnet F, as specified.

3. The cover, provided with the main and branch straps 7' s applied at its ends, and bonnet F, all combined as set forth.

4. The folding bonnet -supporter D, coinposed of the four bars hinged and linked together, in combination with the folding bow,

as specified.
