My invention relates to pi es whereof the stem contains a filter secure to the mouthpeca and extending into the bottom of the The said filter is constituted by a tube of thin metal with perforated walls for the passage of the smoke. n

One feature of this invention is that the said filter, at the end situated within the bowl, is closed at the top so as toprevent ashes or fragments of tobacco from falling through the smoke holes. Another feature is that the filter is given a certain size and shape with respect to the inner chamber of the stem so that it may be obliquely situated in said chamber upon separating the mouthpiece from the stem, so as to be used to give an effective scraping to the walls of said chamber asfar as the end of the same.

Should the said chamber be cylindrical and connected with the bowl by a narrow passage, the filter will preferably comprise a cylindrical portion extending through said passage and a conical part whereof the small base is joined to said cylindrical part, and the lar e base surrounds the inner end of the moudipiece. The filter is preferably secured to the mouthpiece by a screw joint or bayonet joint. One particular feature of this invention consists in constructing the joint in an economical manner by forming on the filter a boss extending inwardly or outwardly and slidable in a helical groove formed around the end of theniouthpiece or within the latter.

When the filter is assembled by screwing it to the mouthpiece, care should be taken that when screwed up, the solid part of the filter shall be in the top position or towards the interior of the bowl. One feature of the invention consists in providing on the filter a ring or shoulder fitting against the end of the mouthpiece whereby the screwing is limited to the exact point required.

In Figs. l and 2, 1 indicates the filter consisting of a cylindre-conical tube whose rear end is disposed upon the mouthpiece 2 whilst the front end extends within the bottom of the bowl 3 wherein it opens by two apertures 4; said tube is further.

Pro" vided with a plurality of lateral orifices 5 situated near the mouthpiece. The said tube is secured by means of a helical groove 6 in the mouthpiece and a boss 7 formed on the tube; upon screwing the latter, its end makes contact with a shoulder 8 at the end of the mouthpiece, the tube being so arranged that the orifices 4 will now come into the lateral position. In this manner the front end of the tube will have a solid part 9 at the top for retaining the ashes and fragments of tobaccoso that only the smoke is allowed to pass through the orifices 4.

Should it be desired to obtain a double expansion of the smoke in the filter, to the tube 1 may be added a perforated inner tube which also fits upon the mouthpiece.

It will be observed that upon removing the mouthpiece from the stem, the filter can be inserted obliquely into the latter so that its end can be used to give an effective scraping to the inner wall of the chamber 10 of the tube as far as the end of the same.

In the modified form of construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the filter 1 consists of a tube secured to the mouthpiece and having at the periphery a plurality of small orifices 5 as well as two larger apertures 4 opening into the bottom of the bowl 3.

The rear end of the tube 1 is provided with a stud 7 engaging one ofthe helical grooves 6 formed in the bore of the mouthpiece 2.

The screwing movement is limited by a rin 11 mounted on the tube and affording a we l-defined position of the tube on thc mouthpiece so that the two apertures 4 assume the lateral position and the solid part 9 is at the top when the mouthpiece occu pies the normal position.

Claims l. A pipe comprising a bowl, a stem forming one part with the bowl, a mouthpiece secured in a removable manner to this stem, a tubular part connected with this mouthpiece and extending into the lower part of the bowl, this tubular part being laterally perforated at its middle portion within the stem so as to provide several holes which act as a filter, said tube being terminated by a cylindrical portion extending into the bottom of the bowl and being used for the draught.

A pipe comprising a bowl, a mouthpiece removably attached 'toy said bowl, a tube with apertured walls secured to said mouthpiece and extending within the lower part of said bowl, the top of the end portion of said tube being solid in order to prevent the ashes from falling directly through the apertures in the walls.

3. A smoking pipe comprising a bowl, a stem made in one part with the said bowl and provided internally with a chamber communicating with the bottom of said bowl through a conduit of a small diameter, a removable mouth-piece provided upon the said stem, a tubular member comprising a cylin-y drical part engaged into the said conduit of a small diameter and a truncated part entering into said chamber of the stem, the said cylindrical part being closed at its end and having two lateral openings leading into the bottom of the bowl, and the said truncated part having orifices provided in its walls and having its larger basis secured upon the mouth-piece.

A pipe comprising a bowl, a mouthpiece removably secured to said bowl, a pipe stem integral with said bowl, said pipe stem comprising a cylindrical chamber and a passage of smaller diameter opening into said bowl, a tube with apertured walls secured to said mouthpiece and extending within the lower part of said bowl a ring disposed upon said tube and adapted to enter into contact with the end of said mouthfpiece, a non-apertured portion at the end of said tube, said ring being so disposed that the said tube screwed into lthe mouthpiece is enabled to assume a position sucl. that the said non-apertured portion shall be situated exactly at the top, thereby preventing the ashes from falling into said tube.

5. A pipe comprising a bowl, a mouthpiece removably secured to said bowl, a pipe stem integral with said bowl, a tube with apertured walls secured to said mouthpiece, said tube being attached by screwing, a boss formed upon the tube by pressing the wall of said tube, a helical groove formed at the end of said mouthpiece and cooperating with said boss.
