IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-BARREL MACHINES.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 157,970, datedDecember 22,1874; application filed June 8, 1874.
CASE A.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES V. MOTTRAM, of the city of Lawrence, county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have made a new and useful invention, to wit: A Paper-Barrel Machine, for the manufacture of barrels and other packages for commercial purposes from paper, straw, or mill board: and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification:
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side or plan view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a top view of a portion, and Fig. 3 a sectional view lengthwise through the centers, of the forming cylinders or calenders.
The machine is composed substantially of two metallic cylinders, A and B, of which the lower one, B, is movable to a small extent perpendicularly. Its bearings are placed upon the shorter ends of compound levers connected with a foot-piece for regulating the pressure, or they may be placed upon the pistons of suitable steam cylinders, into which steam may be admitted by suitable valves and pipes. Connected with these are a casing, M, roller L, guide-rollers I I, apron K, revolving brush- D, roller E, reservoir F, all supported by a suitable frame-work of iron or other suitable material.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The cylinders being heated by steam, or heated air admitted into them through suitable passages, and the material being in suitable position, as at G, Fig. 1, and in continuous rolls, the cylinders being in motion, the end of the paper is placed by an attendant beneath the rollers I I, which are placed so far above the hinged platform or apron K that motion will not be communicated to them from the paper. It is then carried forward and under the roller L, by which, in connection with the formingcylinder A and easing M, it is conducted, and in close contact with said cylinder A. When the material arrives between the two cylinders A and B, pressure is applied from be neath by any proper means. When the first revolution is nearly completed, the attendant presses down the platform or apron K, by which means the paper is brought in contact with the revolving brush D, thus applying the paste or cement. When a suitable thickness of body is attained, the attendant severs the paper by a quick stroke of a knife or other suitable instrument above the rollers I I. As soon as the end has been secured, the package is ready for the next operationthat of applying the hoops. To apply these, the material, in proper widths, being in a suitable position, as at H, and the ends being placed between the rollers I I, the attendant turns a crank attached to one of said rollers, (crank not shown in drawings,) bringing the ends upon and conducting them in contact with the revolving paste-brush, and along the apron K until the roller L is reached, when no further attention is necessary until the proper thickness is gained. The attendant then cuts the paper below the rollers I I, and in one or more revolutions the body of the package is completed and ready for removal from the cylinder. The ends of the tube are kept evenly trimmed by the rotating cutters at the ends of the roller L. The cylinders A and B are geared together, so as to revolve simultaneously. The passages for steam or heated air are shown by the arrows in Fig. 3.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l The machine described, to wit: The combination of the heated cylinder A, the heated pressure-cylinder B, with movable bearings, the trimmer-roller L, the pasting-brush, roller, and reservoir, D E F, the hinged apron K, and guide-rollers I I, as and for the purpose specified.
