To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Annnn'r R. Smns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Potter Valley, in the county of Mendocino and State of California, have new and useful Improvements in a Vell- Drilling Machine, of. which the following is a specification.
The present. invention relates to improvements in well drilling machines, and more particularly to an under slung walking beam therefor. This improved walking beam is designed for use on well drilling machines for the reason that it will permit the spudding in, or starting of the well, without the use of a spudding attachment. The Well may be started without trouble and the operator may continue drilling Without changing to an overhead walking beam, as is-neoessary with an ordinary well drilling machine. With the use of this walking beam, the pull all comes from the rear of the machine, and from the center, thus making the machine more stable. The parts are of such a nature that there is very little liability of breakage. The structure is generally very simple, inexpensive to manuit'actitre,"
strong, durable, QfllClQlll) and reliable in operation, not likely to easily become out of order, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as 'will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The walking beam 18 is' the under surface of the l ion withdrawn from the well by operation of the winch. In starting the drilling, the drill is lowered to the proper depth by the winch, and the drilling is instantly started by simply engaging the clutch. As above stated no attachment is necessary to start or spud in a well, the machine is ready and no adjustment or changes necessary for the spudding in.
It is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be clearly understood without a more detailed description thereof. The present embodiment of the invention has been disclosed in detail merely by way of example since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention, and the above description. It will be apparent that numerous changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages:
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A well drilling machine including a frame, an underslung walking beam mounted on the frame, means associatedwith one'end of the walking beam for rocking the same, a resilient inverted V-shaped bracket having one end fixed adjacent the other end of the walking beam, aspring, a block fixed to the under edge of the walking beam adjacent the attachment of the arm of the bracket thereto, said spring having one end fixed to the block and the other end engageable with the. other end of the bracket, and a Wheel journaled in the apex of the bracket.
2. A well drilling machine including a frame, an underslug walking beam mounted on the frame, means associated with one end i of the Walking beam for rocking the same,
