This projected end of the arm 29' is attached to two spring retaining rods 30 which are substantially circular in forinfas shown and have their free ends extended through a supporting bearing 31 carried by the frame. The bearing 31 acts as an abutment member for coil springs 32 each of which embraces one of the rods 30. These springs are of the expansion type and when a wrench or tool is applied to the square end 28 of the shaft of the. large gear, the arm 29 may be pulled to a position of tightly compressing both of the springs 32 as will be readily apparent from a consideration of the structure shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. To maintain the springs 32 under compression until the apparatus is to be released, a locking pawl or dog 33 is pivotally mounted on the frame and'adapted to engage the pinion 25.
As stated, the piston 21 is of rubber material so that it may be longitudinally expanded to decrease its diameter. The longitudinal expansion or lengthening of the piston 21 is accomplished by a flexible chain 34 which is attached to one end of the piston 21 and passes through guide loops 35 carried by the rod 22, the free end of the chain being adapted to be attached to a hook member 36 mounted on the end of the arm 24. By pulling upon the chain 3%, the rub ber piston 21 may be longitudinally extended to decrease its diameter so that it may be conveniently inserted into the reservoir 7. When the chain is released the rubber piston will expand, thus making a tightjoint and preventing any of the paint from leaking from the reservoir.
When the apparatus is in use, the frame structure 1 will be strapped upon the back of the painter or workman and he will hold the paint brush in either hand. By releasing dog 33, the springs 32 will be per mitted to expand thus imparting a turning movement to the gear 27 which will turn the pinion 25. The pinion 25 carrying the arm 2% will impart a movement to the plunger arm 22 which will push or force the plunger 21 into the paint reservoir 7, thus forcing the paint out. through the chamber 11 and to the supply tube 19. The agitator element 12 may be operated to keep the paint flowing evenly and preventclogging within the reservoir or chamber 11.
Minor changes may be made in the de tails of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a frame work, a substantially semi-circular tube forming a paint chamber having one end closed and the other end opened, a plunger element movable into the open end of the said tube, a plunger rod attached to the plunger, a pinion centrally mounted in the frame, a large gear in mesh with the pinion and mounted in the said frame, spring retaining rods, an arm carried by the large gear and attached to one end of the spring retaining rod, coil expansion springs embracing the said spring retaining rods and having engagement with the said arm carried by the large gear, an abutment member for the opposite ends of the said springs, means to manually rotate the said large gear whereby the springs may be compressed, and an operating arm carried by the pinion and'attached to one end of the said plunger rod.
2. A device of the character described comprising a frame work so constructed as to be attached to the back of an operator, a semi-circular reservoir, a plunger movable in one end of the reservoir, a rod connected to said plunger, an arm for actuating said plunger rod, a pinion secured to said rod, a large gear attached to the frame and in mesh vwith the pinion, compression springs attached to the large gear, a projecting arm acting against said compression springs, means for rotating" the large gear, a tube leading from one end of the reservoir, a brush attached to said tube, and means for controlling the flow of fluid into said brush.
7 3. A device of the character described comprising a semi-circular tube forming a reservoir, a plunger movable in one end of said reservoir, a tube leading from the opposite end of said reservoir, means for agi tating liquid in said reservoir, and means for agitating the plunger in the opposite end of the reservoir.
In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my signature.
. WILLIAM C. SEITZ.
