Patented Apr. 6, 1926.
UNITED STATS PA-TENT OFFICE.
EUGENE M. PLETCHER, OF PHILADLPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
i INHALER.
Application filed October 19, 1922. VV Serial No. 595,470.
To all 'whom t may Gomera:
Be it known that I, EUGENE M; PLETOHER, a citizen of the' United States, residing `in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Inhaler, of which the following is a specification.
My inventlon relates to an inhaler adapted to be inserted into and retained in'the nostrils, and supply'a medicament to the latter i for the treatment of a cold, catarrlnliay fever, asthma, infiuenza, etc., the inhaler being formed with cups or pockets in which the medicament is contained so that the medicamentV is thoroughly effective by continuous vaporization for the treatment as above. l
The present invention is an'improvement over that shown in the Letters Patent No. 1,231,787, granted to me July' 3, 1917,' and is designed to remove the outer ends of the medicament in said patent from contact with the' membrane or lining of the nose and present in the present device the smooth eXterior sides of the cups to said membrane, thus avoiding cl'iafingV or Cutting of the lat'- ter, and causing the continuous vaporization as above stated.l The invention is satisfactorily illustrated lin the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may lbe varied, and so it is to Vbe understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spiritor scope of the claim. V
Figure 1 represents a perspective view.
On the upper ends of said legsand secured w therto are the eu'ps 2 respectiv'ely which (files-ed but sioaed at'tire mp5 e ;ma eides 4;, and open below as at 5 and adapted to form pockets to receive wads or cartridges of a medicament of a nature to evaporate and vso act on the interiorV of the nostrils on the bronchial tubes, etc. to treat the same for the ailments above stated.
The cartridges are inserted into the cups throughv the open bottoms of the latter and pressed upwardly thereinto, and owing to small slots being formed in the walls of the cups said walls are rendered resilient so as to exert pressurev on theV cartridges and so take firm hold ofthe same and prevent them.
from dr'opping out through the bottomV of the cups. f ,i I
As the cups are now charged with the medicament the device is inserted upwardly in the nostrils when the resilient bow engages' the sides of the septum of the nose and owing to its resiliency it will'frictionally take hold of said septum and so retain thev device in the nostrils. The medicament of the cartridges will now vaporize continuously in the nostrils the vapor. then entering lthe same and so reaching desirecl places whereby it will cause elfective remedial `treatment of the ailments above enumerated.
Attention is drawn'to the fact that'the cups rise from the upper ends of the how and theyV have the walls of their outerv sides 41-. extend in vertical direction and saidv sidesare'in themain smooth without liability to injure the membranes of the nostrils.
It is not intended that ythe cups shall contact with the membranes ofthe nostrils and so suflici'ent spaces will be afforded in the nostrils for air to enter the same for b'reathing purposes. w In practice the how and'cups are formed integral of a single piece of metal or material properly cut and stamped into the respec-V tive form thus avoiding oints, and de- -creasing the cost of manufacture, producing` the device of reduced expense, i
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure byV Letters Patent, is1- v VAn inhaler comprising a'pair of inverted cups thetop walls of each of which are' slitted T-shaped fashion to providea yield-A ing Cartridge sup'porting member, a' sub- 'stantially oylindrical Cartridge vertically positoned within'each efl said members,- and a bewed sprinjcorictihg said c'u'`` a ,care M..
