R. 'r. CLYDE LOCK FOR END GATES Filed Jan. 29. 1324 wownkw attouwq To all whom it may concern:
Patented Apr. 6; 1926.
y UNITED STATES PATENT-OFFICE.
ROBERTT. crime, or MARION CENTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
Locx FOR ENnGATEs,
'App lication'filed January 29, 1924. Serial No. 689,295.
Be it known that I, ROBERT T. CLYDE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Marion Center, in .thecounty of Indiana, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks for End Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as w ll enable others skilled inthe, art to wh ch it appertains to make and use the same; Y This invention relates to new and useful improvements locks for the end gates of dump, wagons andthe like.
The primary object of the'prescnt inven-' tion is to provide a device of this character which is so Constructed and arranged that the locking and unlocking ofthe end gate may be accomplished from the-seatofthe driver of the vehicle. I
Another object of the present inventionis to provide a device of this kind which will be thoroughly efficient and practical 1n its operation and which, when in locked position, will withstand the vibration caused by the movement of -the vehicle, so that all danger of the end gate becoming 'accidently unlocked will be obviated. I
A still further object'of the present invention is to provide a device of this 'nature which is of exceedingly simple construction and wherein a minimum number of elements are employed.
With these and other objects in View, the
invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement'of'parts as wlllbe more .fully described hereinafter, illustrated in the accompanying drawing. and particular- I ly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: r V -F1gure 1 1s a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with'th'e present invention, as applied to a dump wagon,
parts of the wagon being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan View of the same.
Figures 3 and 4; are front and rear views, respectively of the invention applied to a vehicle, the dotted lines showing the position of the elements when the gate is unlocked while the full lines show the position of the elements when the gate is locked.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which are illustrated one form which may be'used for carrying the invention into practice, it will be. noted that there is disclosed adump wagon or the.
like embodying the side members 10, the bottom 11, the front end12 and the end gate 13, which is suitably mounted for swinging movement. The bottom 11 of the wagon projects slightly beyond the front .end 12 and is provided with a groove 14, which extends longitudinally thereof from one end to-the other. It is in connection with a wagon of this type that the present invention is employed.
prises the two elements 15 and 16, the former of which is arranged for holding the,
gate in closed position, while the latter is employed to lock the end gate holding meansin its proper position.
The'element 15 comprises a. bar or rod 17 which'is positioned within the longitu- Generally speaking, the invention comdinally extending groove '14.- and is held therein by suitable fastening means. The
rear end portion of this bar 17 is bent. at right angles to form the latch 18, which is arranged to engage the outer face of the lower free end of the end gate, whereby to hold it in closed position. The front end portion of the bar 17 is also bent angularly as indicated at 19, and this portion 19 is bent in the same directionas the latch member 18, so that they are substantially parallel with each other. The front end portion is again bent, however, and this time to the left, to form the lever 20, and the terminal portion of this lever is bent rearwardly to provide a stop 21, the object of which will benoted hereinafter.
. The element 16, as already stated, is employed to look the end gate holding means in the desired position, and this element comprises essentially the short, substantially vertical pin 22, which passesthrough the projecting portion of the bottom of the wagon I and is movably held therein, by suitable swung also to the right and when this has been done, the latch member 18 assun'ies a substantially horizontal position with the result that the gate is free to swing open. lVhen the body of the We gon is lowered, the gate will auton'iaticaliy swing to closed position through the action of gravity. lever 20 can then be swung to the left and the catch also turned in the san'ie direction until it engages the upper face of the lever. The stop 2i abuts against the bottom of the Wagon when the lever is swung to the right and thus prevents the said lever from saying- -in;g downwardly below the wagon. The stop 21 further prevents the swinging of the lever 20, should the catch 23 he accidently caused to swing entirely to the left.
From the above, it will seen that there 1 has been provided a simple, yet practical device which capable of attaining all of the objects and performing all of the functions claimed and it is to be understood that such changes in the construction and arrangement. of the device may be made, as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
1t also to be noted that the groove in the bottom of the Wagon is not essential to the successful operation of the device, inasmuch as the bar or rod 17 may be supported by 1 of suitable breeaets which would provide bearings therefor.
ll hat ll claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The eoi-i "ion with a wagon box and the depending pivoted end gate thereof, of a rock shaft mounted centrally and longitudinally on the bottom of the box, "the rear end of the shaft being extended at'right angles for engagement with the lower free end of the end gate to hold the same in closed position, the other end of the shaft being extended in parallel relation to the first-named end and thence laterally at right angles thereto, the terminus of said end being tended inwardly in parallel relation to the shaft, and a horizontally swingable dete-nt carried by the bottom of the Wagon box, beyond one end thereof, for retaining engagement with the last-named end of the shaft.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
RQBERT T. CLYDE.
