Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.:
RUFUS RODE, OF MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, ASSIGNOR TO JOI-IN DENIG, OF
YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lIN BOAT-CARS.
Speeieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 5,794, dated September 23, 1856.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it kn'own that I, RUFUS RODE, ot Manchester township, York county, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Double-Jointed Oar for Boats or Skitts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ot this specification, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon,in which- Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 a perspective View, of my invention.
The nature of my invention consists in dividing the .usual-shaped boat-oars in two pieces, forming a double joint in the center to operate on an oscillating plate, which forms the fulerum and works upon an oar or rower box attached firmly to the sides of the boat and gives a reverse motion to the oar-blade. so that the oarsman can vrow the boat with his tace fronting the bow and enables him to row wit-h more safety than the usual mode of rowing with his back to the front of the boat. The oscillation of the oar is made more perfeet and easy and the oars be shipped or unshipped with as much despatch as at present between the thole-pins.
I construct a devicegol metal orwroughtiron, which operates upon the oar-box or rower-box numbered l. This oar or rower box is firmly fastened with bolts to t-he sides of the boat.
No. 2 is an oscillating' plate, which is the fulcrum of the boat-oar and operates on its Center or axis upon the oar-box I. To this oscillating plate 2 I attach angular-shaped arms or levers 3 3, to which the handles and oar-blades A A are fastened with screws.
No. 4 is a connecting rod or plate, which unites the angular levers 3 3 at their inner points, so as to make them Work regularly.
No. 5 is a top plat-e titted on with screwbolts to keep down the connecting rod or plate No. 4 and the arms 3 On the loom or inside arm 3 I fasten the handle of the oar, and on the outside arm 3 I Afasten the oar-blade A.
W hat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the oscillating plate and double-jointed arms forming a doublejointed boat-oar operating on an oar or rower box, as herein described, or in any manner substantially the same, forthe purpose of enabrling the oarsman to row forward with his face fronting the bow of the boat.
y RUFUS RODE.
