lWILLIAM.' H.' GRAHAM, OF BERWIOK, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO 'AMERICAN OAR. kANI) FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
' DUST GUARD FOR JOURNAL BOXES.
Application filed May 14, 1923. Serial No. 638,721.
To all @07mm` t muy conce/"fn:
Be it 1Known that I, IVILLIAM H. GRAHAM, residing at- Berwick, county of Columbia, State of Pennsylvania, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Dust Guard for Journal Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make yand to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which' illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof within the scope of the claims will occur to persons skilled in the art.
In said drawings: Y
Fig. 1 is a rear elevation, partly in section, of a journal box constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a yfragmentary section through the dust guard pocket of the journal box shown in Fig. 1,'the section being taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 8 is a view in section of the wedge used to close the opening in the dust guard pocket; and A Fig. 4 is a broken fragmentary transverse section on a larger scale, taken through the wedge and dust guard opening in the journal box shown in Fig. 1.
This invention relates to journal boxes of the type having the dust guard pocket open at the top -and hasfor its object to provide an improved wedge or block for closing the opening at the top of the dust guard poel-iet of a journal box of this type.
In the drawings, the journal box 1 is provided with a dust guard pocket 2 between the rear wall 3 of the journal box and a wall 4 which separates the dust guard pocket from the rest of the journal box, the walls 'being provided with openings 5 and 6, re-
spectively, to receive an axle 7. The dust guard pocket is open at the top, as shown in Fig. 2 and in the pocket is placed the dust guard 8 provided with an opening 9 to receive the axle 7 the dust guard 8 being formed in any desired manner and being placed in the pocket 2 before the axle 7 is inserted through the openings 5,6 and 9.
To close the opening at the top of the dust guard pocket there is provided a block or wedge 10 adapted to rest on ledges or shoulders 11 formed in the walls 12 and 13 which form the ends of the dust guard pocket. IThe wedge 10 is tapered both at the sides and ends in order to provide for theeasy insertion of the wedge into the opening. To the bottom of the wedge 10 there is secured a strip 14 of sheet metal which is fastened to the wedge 10 by nails 15 which are driven threugh the strip 14 and the wedge 1U and clenched. The ends of the strip 14 project beyond the ends of the fwedge 1() a short distance, the length of the strip 14 being slightly greater than the distance between the walls 12 and 13 of the opening in which the wedge is placed.
When the wedge 10 is inserted in the opening at the top of a dust guard pocket, the projecting portions of the strip 14 will engage the walls 12 and 13 and be bent upwardly about the edges of the wedge as shown in Figs. l and 4. vWith the projecting portions of the strip 14 bent upwardly as shown in Fig. 4 andthe wedge pressed downwardly until the strip 14 rests upon the shoulders 11 the ends of the projecting portions of the strip 14 will be positioned to engage with the walls of the opening and prevent the dislodging of the wedge 10 from the opening and loss of the wedge in service.
That is claimed is:
1. In combination with a journal box having a dust guard opening, a dust guard therein, a separately formed and separately insertable block to close said opening and means secured to said block and bent upon the insertion of said block in the dust guard opening to engage the walls of said opening and prevent removal of said block.
2. In combination with a ournal box having a dust guard opening, a dust guard therein, a separately formed and separately insertable block to close said opening and a metal strip adapted to engage the walls of said opening to prevent removal of said block.
3. In combination with a journal box having a dust guard opening, a dust guard lfreely movable therein, a separately formed block to close said opening and a metalstrip secured to said block and of greater length than said block, said strip being bent upon the insertion of said block in the dust guard opening so as to engage with the walls of said opening' and prevent removal of said block.
