Be it known that I, NOAH N. NEHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whittier, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Locks,
- of which the following is a specification.
This is a divisional application of the subject matter disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 631,572, filed April 12, 1923. My co-pending application relates to improvements in combination locks for controlling the gasoline line upon vehicles, such as automobiles. The combination lock is adapted to be mounted upon the dashboard of the vehicle and actuates and controls a valve in the gasoline line leading to the motor of the vehicle.
The present application relates to the specific combination lock, and it is to be understood that although the combination lock has been previously disclosed as applied to a gasoline line lock, it is adapted for use in general application. o
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved form of combination lock adapted to control a slidable plunger which actuates the looking or latch element.
With the foregoing andother objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, 'wherein: Y

Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the dashboard of the vehicle is shown at D, and although the lock will be described as applied to the dashboard of the vehicle, it will be understood that any other suitable ;mounting may be employed in the general application of the look. A plate, circular in form, which is indicated at 10, is mounted upon the front face of the dashboard D, and a bezel 11 is secured upon the plate as by rivets 12 having countersunk heads. The rivets extend through the dashboard D. i A disc 13 is rotatable within the bezel 11 and is provided With a handle forming rim 14. The disc 13 is preferably countersunk, as indicated at 15, Within the rim 14 to provide room facilitating the grasp ing of the knob 16 upon the plunger 17 extending through the disc. The plunger 17 extends through the dashboard D, and upon the under side thereof there is mounted a suitable frame 18 which carries a plate 19 through Which the end of the plunger 17 extends. The end of the plunger 17 is squared or angular in form, asat 20, and extends through a corresponding aperture in the plate 19, so that the plunger is capable of sliding movement, but rotation of the plunger is prevented.
In use of the look as upon a gasoline line lock for vehicles, a flexible element 21 is secured to the end of the plunger 17 and extends through a conduit 22 which may be secured to the frame 18. It will be readily understood that other operating or latching mechanisms may be actuated by the plunger 17, and that any suitable mechanism can be secured to the plunger so as to be operated thereby. Upon the under side of the dashboard D, there is mounted upon the plunger a pin 23 forming a pro jection on the plunger. A sleeve '24 is integral with the disc 13 and is disposed about the plunger 17. A second sleeve 25 is disposed about the sleeve 24 so as to be rotatable thereon. This sleeve is provided with a flange disposed upon the under side of the disc 13. A suitable screw 27, pro-- viding projection upon the under side of the disc 13, is so arranged as to be adapted to engage a pin or projection 28 formed upon the flange 26 when the disc'13 is rotated. A leaf spring 29 is mounted upon the plate 10 and engages the'flange 26 of the second sleeve 25, urging the second sleeve toward the under side of the disc 13. The leaf spring 29 provides a friction means, frictionally engaging the second sleeve 25, tending to resist rotation of the second sleeve when the disc 13 is rotated and when the projections 27 and 28 are disengaged. The ends of the sleeves 2L and 25, which are remote from the disc 13, are flush with each other and normally pro vide an abutment for the pin or projection23 on the plunger, sot-hat the plunger 17 cannot be caused to slide axially. A slot 21' is formed in the slecve 24:, which is capable of receiving the lower portion of the pin 23. This slot is preferably angular, as at 2443, providing a bayonet slot in the sleeve 24:; The second sleeve 25 is provided with a slot capable of receiving the upper end of the pin 23. Upon the bezel 11 there is preferably formed a setting point P and upon the rim of the disc 13 there is preferably arranged numbered graduations C.
The operation of the lock as follows: Considering the look as being looked, that is, with the slots 21 and 25 in disalignment, so that the end surfaces of the sleeves pro vide an abutment for the pin 23, preventing sliding of the plunger 1?, the disc 13 is first rotated, causing the screw 27 to engage the projection 28. The disc is continued to rotate until the proper graduation C is disposed opposite the setting point P. In such position the slot 25 will be disposed opposite the pin or projection but the slot 21- will not be opposite the pin but will be angularly spaced therefrom. After the sleeve 25 has been set in this manner, the disc is rotated in the opposite direction until the proper graduation C is opposite the setting point P, in which case the slot 21 will be in alignment with the slot both of which slots will be opposite the pin 23. It will be understood that when the disc 13 is reversely rotated, the sleeve will not tend to 1'0 are with it, because of the sprin 29. hen the slots 2-l and 25 are in alignment and opposite the pin 23,
the knob 16 upon the plunger 17 can be pulled so as to slide the plunger 17 and actuate the locking mechanism or latch of the lock, which in the case of an automobile gasoline line lock opens the valve controlling he gasoline line. Such sliding movement disc 13 can be rotated slightly, causing the pin 23 to enter the slot 21", which will prevent the plunger 1? from sliding baclc into its original or locked position. The pin 23 can be caused to pass out of the slot 21 by swinging back the disc 13. It will be understood that the sleeves 2i and constitute types of tumblers which are settable by the disc 13 to bring the slots in alignment to receive the projection upon the plunger.
It will be understood that various changes in the detail of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.

A con'ibination locl; comprising a slid able, but not rotatable, plunger having a n'ojection formed thereon, a disc rotatable about said plunger, and a sleeve disposed about said plunger and having a bayonet slot formed therein apable of receiving said projection so as to permit mmxement of the plunger and to lock the plunger in moved position, said sleeve being actuated by said disc.

A. combination lock comprising slidable, but not rotatable, plunger having a projection formed thereon, a disc rotatable about said plunger, a sleeve rotatable about said plunger, and a second sleeve rotatable about said sleeve, said sleeves being settable by said disc and having slots formed therein capable of receiving said projection so as to permit sliding of the plunger.
