Description

Unir sa Brion.
FEATHER-EDGE GAGE.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 15,789, dated September 23, 1856.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, G. G. TowNsEND, of the city of Rochester, inthe county of Monroe and State of New York, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feather-Edge Gages for Trimming the I/Velts of Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a full and accurate description, reference being had to the aocompanying drawings, making part of this specification, of which drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the instrument complete. Fig. 2 is a plan of the top of the instrument, showing the arrangement of the knife and feather guard. Fig. 3 is a magnified view of the feather guard.
It is well known to those employed in the art, that it is a very difficult thing to trim the welts of boots and shoes smoothly and evenly, and without nicking; and consequently injuring the uppers thereof-it being understood that this trimming is performed after the upper and sole are fastened together. l
The object of my invention is to obviate these difficulties.
In the drawings it will be seen that there tained in place by the screws (S S.) The form and relative positions of the knife and feather guard will be readily understood from Figs. 2 and 3, where it will be seen that the feather guard not only forms a throat with the knife after the manner of the joiners plane, but the point of the guard being split or nicked so that the point of the knife may lie in it, effectually prevents the knifes point from cuttinginto the tippen-while, by the additional rigidity which it confers upon the knife, it very much improves its powers of shaving or trimming the welt. To insure the soles being trimmed smoothly and of equal or proper thickness all around, I add the gage plate (G,) which slides` on the pins (P P) and is adjusted by means of the screw D passing through it, and working in block (B) between two shoulders-of which, one is formed by the washer (W) seen around the point of said screw in Fig. 2. The end is rounded and beveled as seen in Fig. l, and its action will be readily understood from the drawings and the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the knife K and feather guard F for the purpose set forth, they being constructed and arranged substantially as described.
