Description
UNITED STATES PTENT OFFTC.
V. SNELL, OF NORTH BRIDGEVATER, MASSACHUSETTS.
HEEL-SHAVER FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,960, dated July 20, 1858i.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, VARANES SNELL, of North Bridgewater, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel-Shavers for Boots and Shoes, and that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
The figures of the accompanying plate of drawings represent my improvements.
Figure l is a front or face view of my improved heel-shaver. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig'. 3 is a central longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical sect-ion of the same.
In the tools heretofore invented for shaving the heels of boots and shoes it has been necessary to remove the knife from the handle in order to sharpen it; and it. has been difficult to grind these knives because there was no convenient lace bv which to Oras them in applying them to the grinding surface.
My improvement consists in combining with a knife rigidly secured to the stock or handles, an adjustable guard that can be removed from the stock at pleasure, thereby exposing the edge of the knife and permitting it to be applied to the grinder and sharpened without removing it from the handles.
a a, in the drawings represent the stock or handles of the tool. Z) Z) the knife, rigidly secured to the stock a a in any proper manner. Immediately in front of the edge of the knife is placed an adjustable guard c c that can be moved up and down by means of slots d (Z and set-screws e e Fig. 2, or entirely removed from the stock as will be readily understood. Thus, by loosening the set-screws e e the guard c o can be entirely removed from the stock, exposing the edge of the knife which remains rigidly fastened in the handle, thereby, by grasping the handles of the tool, enabling the operator to readily apply 'the edge of the knife to the grinding surface. The advantage of this arrangement will be readily apparent, as the knife can be much more quickly sharpened and with greater accuracy than in any tools for similar' purposes heretofore invented.
Having thus described my improvements, l shall state my claim as follows:
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is-
Combining with the stock and the stationary knife the adjustable guard so arranged as to be susceptible of being removed from the said stock as set forth.
VARANES SNELL.
