To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS KINDERVATER, J a citizen otthe United States, and a 'resie dent of New York, in the countyandState of New York, have invented a certainvnew and useful Improvement in Steam Boilers, of which improvement the following is-a specification.
My invention relates to steam boilers of the locomotive type, and'its object is to pro.- vide a boiler of such type which shall embody the advantages of afiording free circulationof water, strength of general structure, ready access to tubes, and ample steam storage capacity.

In the prac ice of my invention, referring, descriptively to the specific embodiment thereof which is herein exemplified, the firebox is preferably, as shown, of rectangular horizontal section, increasing in width from top to bottom to permitof the application front header, 1, and extending upwardly of any desired extent of grate area, and comprises a front header or water leg, 1; a back header or water leg, 1; a lurality of water tubes, 2, connecting said iieaders; two bottom water drums, 3, 3, located on opposite sides of the firebox, and connecting the .head-. ers, adjacent to their bottoms; and a casing, 4, of material of low heat conducting capac-- ity, as magnesia, asbestos, mineral wool, etc., which closes the top and sides of the firebox. One or more door openings, 1, closed by suitable doors, are formed in the back header, and stay bolts are secured,'in the usual manner, in the portions of both headers which are not stayed by the water tubes and bottom drums. its ends, with the water spaces of the front header, 1, and of the steam delivery chamber, 7. The casing, 13, is of such comparatively small diameter as not to interfere with free access to the ends of the Water tubes, 2,, for application or repair. The forward portion of the combustion'chamber,
12, which is located in the steam delivery chamber 7, is enlarged in diameter sufficiently to receive the set of smoke tubes, 11, which are expanded into its front sheet.
The relation of the ends of the water tubes, 2, to the headers, 1, 1, and the manner of closing the tube ends, are clearly shown in Figs. 4 to 6 inclusive. The tubes communicate with the water spaces ofthe headers, through slots, 2, cut in the tubes, and the tube ends are closed by plugs, 2, which are drawn to a tight bearing in copper washers, 2, interposed between their inner ends and bevelled surfaces on the ends of the tubes, by nuts, 2, engaging screw threads, 2 on the plugs, and bearing on cap rings, 2, enclosing the ends of the tubes. The tubes are first prepared by bevelling their ends, on their inner and outer surfaces, expanding them into the sheets of the headers, and further securing them by welding to the outer sheets, and inserting the washers, 2, as shown in Fig. 5. The washers are then expanded, and a tight joint formed, by drawing the plug outwardly by the nuts, 2.
It will be seen that, in a steam boiler of the construction substantially as hereinbefore set forth, the application of water tubes in lieu of water legs in the formation of the sides of the firebox, and the interposition between the sides of the firebox, of a plurality of water tubes, materially promotes the free circulation of water, and likewise substantially increases the area of firebox heating surface. The ends of the water tubes are, at. all times, perfectly accessible, and the elimination of the usual stay bolts in the sides of the firebox is a feature of much importance, both as to increasing safety and reducing-cost of construction and maintenance. The reduction of diameter of the major portion of the waist of the boiler, promotes its strength without objectionable reduction of the area for the traverse of products of combustion I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a steam boiler of the locomotive type, the combination of a front and a back firebox header or water leg; a. plurality of inclined water tubes, connecting said headers, and constituting the side walls of the firebox; a plurality of -reversely inclined water tubes, interposed between the side wall tubes and connecting said headers; arch tubes leading from the front header into members of theintern'iediate set of water tubes; a steam drum, communicating with the headers, above the water tubes; and a co1nbustion chamber, comin unic-ating with the firebox.
2. In a steam boiler of the locomotive type, the combination of a firebox, comprising front and back headers or water legs,
and connecting water tubes; a cylindrical steam delivery chamber, located. forward of the firebox; a 'watercasing, 1 of smaller diameter, connecting the'front header and the steam delivery chamber; a combustion chamber, extending through the front header and the watereasing, into the steam delivery chamber; a smoke box; a waist section of conical form and smaller diameter, extending from the steam delivery chamber to the smoke box; smoke tubes, extending through said section, from the combustion chamber to the smoke box; and steam drums, communicating with the firebox headers, the steam delivery chamber and the waist section.
3. In a steam boiler of the locomotive type, the combination of afirebox; a cylindrical steam delivery chamber located forward thereof; a Water casing, of smaller diameter, connecting the front water space of the firebox with said chamber; a conical waist section, also of smaller diameter, connected to said chamber; steam drums located above the firebox and waist section, and communicating therewith and with the waist section; a smoke box; a combustion chamber and smoke tubes establishing communication between said combustion chamber and smoke box.
