HINGE;
riippiicatnm inea May is, i925. sei-iai No. 36,897.
To all whom t may concer/rt:
Be it known that I, JESSE N. DIDAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and Statev of Oliiohavev invented certain new and use'- ful Improvements iii Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stantially at right angles vto the bodywith-f.
out detaching or disarranging the leaves of the hinge, but by swinging the lid beyond the right angular position the lid can readily be detached from the casket. It is customary in manufacturing metal caskets to as semble the parts together and thereafterupholster or line the body of the casket andk lid and for that reason it is desirable to the lid from the casket. p
butt hinge wherein the leaves of the hinge have vthe knuckles and pi'ntle atV thel inner edges of the leaves, but applicant does not wish to limit the invention to that particular i type of hinge.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 is aV longitudinal section, parts being broken away and the lid being 'shown closed in full lines and in openposition in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a detail view in section, the parts being in closed position. v Fig. 3 is asimilar view, the lid being iiil abnormal position for purposes of disconnecting same. Fig. l is a perspective view showing the leaves of the hinge disconnected. f l Like figures of reference indicate like parts throughout the dierent views. Y
The body of the casket is marked l and the lid is 2. The hinge is composed of the leaves 3 and el. The leaf 3 of the hinge is formed with the usual knuckles 5 and 6 through which the' pi'ntle 8 is inserted and improvements i in hinges, particularly those applied vto caskets detachv n l edge: of the leaf 3. In this manner there AThis improvement is shown applied toy a this leaf is preferably secured to the casket with the pintle projecting below the top sur. face of the body of the casket-as indicated in Figs. fl land 2. The leaf 4 is preferably 4secured to the lid and has a hook shaped part 7 at its inner end and this ,hook shaped f part 7 is adapted to fit over the pintlef and betweenthe knuckles t3 and 6 and as indienen-fr @may Jnssn N. DIDAY, or COLUMBS, onto, AssiGNoR To THE BELMONT GASKET COMPANY',
cated in Figs. 2 and 3, the'hinge members z areso formed and the ranged that in open position the leaves will be offset one from 'theother and in closed position the leaves-will make a snug fit one arts thereof so- `arupon the other. The braces or hingedhold-v ing bars 9 will k'eep'the'lid from swinging to a position where `the lid can be ldetached from the body of the casket, butby removing the braces 9 the lid can then be swung to tlieV position shown in Fig. 3 when the hook shaped part 7 can beremoved from engagementwitli the'v pintle, thereby removing the lidl from the casket, but in the positions shown in Fig, l'the hook cannot be ref Y Vinoved from engagement with` they pintle by reason ofthe free Aend of ythe hook `being' Y,
clamped between the pintle 8and1the inner' is formed a hinge that is adapted to a lid that must be closed with a'snug fit andlyet one that can be readily removed `when leaf having a knuckle registering with the space between the knuckles of the other leaf, a pintle for said. knuckles, said single knuckle being laterally offset with relation toits leaf and open at one side to permit it -to lbe lifted fromV said pintle when the lid is in open position,'the opposing leaves being formed to prevent the ,disconnection of said open knuckle from said pintle duringJ the normal swinging movement of said top, means for limiting the norma-l swinging Having described the invention, Iv claim as movement of Saidtop but capable of being releasedto permit the top'to make an abnormal movementrfor the purpose of disconneoting the open knuckle from 'said pintle,
the offset' relation "of saidopen knuckleV with respect to its leaf permitting the top 'to elo'se f vtightly -agggainstthe receptacle While permit- Vting the yhinge members Vizo/remain locked during normal movement of the top and to my hanclrthisfy 14thA day of"Mayr1925.1l 4
