Be it known that I, ALo'NZo E. RHoAnEs, a citizen of the United States and a resident of Hopedale. county of Vere-ester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Intermittent flhread-Cutting Temples, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention" relates to improvements in intermittently operated temple thread cutters for looms of the automatic filling replenishing type.
The object of the invention is to provide novel and simple temple thread cn'tter construction in which the thread cutting mechanism is operated for a predetermined period after the operation of the filling replenishing mechanism and then rendered inoperative until the next call for filling replenishment. Various means have heretofore been provided for rendering the operation of the parting mechanism intermittentso that it will act only for a short period after filling replenishment. Such mechanisms have usually been associated with the temple itself and are co1nparati\-'ely small and more or less delicate in construction.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide ainore rugged construction which will stand up under the wear and shock of the loom and which will be supported wholly or mainly from the temple stand.
A further object of the invention is to provide a detent pivotally mounted upon the temple stand adapted to engage the movable thread parting device and positively hold the parting device out of operative positon during the normal rujnning of the loom with means operable by the changing mechanism of the loom for releasing the thread cutting device and permitting it to be restored to operative position and also with a bodily movable timing device operable to lock the detent in inoperative position for a predetermined period after call for transter and with means, intermittently actuated by a-predetermined number of movements of the parting device to restore the detent to operative position.

The present invei'ition comprises mechanism for controlling the action of the temple thread cutter adapted to be associated with the usual type of filling replenishing loom, such for example as the well known Northrop type of loom. The parts of the 100111 which are illustrated herein comprise a breast beam 1 and a controller rod 2 through which the action of the filling replenishing mechanism, or other means for changing the operation of the loom is initiated, and the usual temple stand 3 which is mounted upon the breast beam in the usual manner (not shown). The temple arm 41 is slidably mounted in the temple stand 3 and held in extended position by the usual spring (not shown) and is provided with a temple head 5 having a downwardly extending heel 6 which lies in the path of the lay and is engaged by it upon each beat-up of the lay.
The thread parting device may be of any usual construction. As illustrated herein it comprises a stationary blade 7 which is rigidly secured to the temple head and a reciprocating and oscillating movable cutter blade 8 which is slidably mounted in suitable ways in the head and is provided with a hookshaped end 9 to engage, and upon reciprocation of the cutter to sever, the filling. The cutter blade 9 is provided with a downwardly extending heel 10 which lies in the path of the lay and is normally held in advance of the heel 6 of the temple by a spring 11 which is secured at its upper end to a suitable stud upon the temple arm 4. and at its lower end is wound about a stud 12 projecting from the heel 10 of the cutting blade 8. The parts above described may be and desirably are of a usual construction.
The mechanism for controlling the move ment of the thread parting device, or as illustrated herein the cutting blade, comprises a detent 13 having a hook-shaped end 14 which is adapted to engage the stud 12 upon the heel 10 of the cutting blade. The detent 13 desirably is formed in longitudinally extensible sections and is pivoted upon a stud 15 projecting laterally from the temple stand 3. As illustrated herein the section 16 of the detent which is pivoted upon the stud 15 is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 17- which receives a complementary rib .8 see Fig. 5) upon the end sec ion 13 of the detent, the sections of the detent being secrred together in adjusted position by a bolt 19. The detent is pr vided with a downwardly extending arm 20 adapted to engage and rest upon the breast beam of the loom and to limit the downward movement of the detent when it engages-the stud 12 of the heel of the cutter.
While the weight of the detent may be sufficient to cause it to descend until the lug 20 is arrested by its engagement with the breast beam such depression desirably is insured by providing a helical spring upon the stud 15 with one end of the spring anchored in the temple stand and the other "end anchored in the detent. This spring not only serves to depress the detent, but to hold the hooked end thereof positively in engagement with the stud 12 during the normal operation of the loom.
The detent is provided with a laterally projecting stud 21 which extends across the path of an arm 22 which is fixedly secured to the controller rod 2 by a set screw 23. hen transfer is called for during the operation of the loom the controller rod 2 and its arm 22 are rotated in a counterclockwise direction thereby raising the arm cutter and actuates it so that any filling end which projects from the selvage of the web of cloth will be severed by the co-operation of the hooked end 9 of the movable cutter and the stationary cutter 8.
It is desirable that the movable cutting blade shall be actuated a sutiicient number of times after transfer takes place to insure the severance of the filling end which extends from the web of the cloth. The present invention relates to means for so controlling the detent that it will be held from operative positionthat is to say the position in which it engages the stud 12-until the cutter has been actuated a predetermined number of times. The mechanism for accom-- plishing this purpose comprises a timing de vice which is carried by the temple stand and is bodily raised by the detent when the cutter is released. The timing mechanism is provided with means operable when thus raised to lock the detent in inoperative position and when the timing device is restored to its normal position the detent is withheld from engagement with the thread parting device until the timing device has been intermittently actuated a predetermined numher of times by or through the movement of the lay.

The detent 13 is provided with a laterally e2;- tcnding preferably cylindrical stud 32 which located within the open end of the cam slot when the detent is in position. to engage the stud 12 upon the heel of the movable cutting blade and is retained within the concentric portion of the cam slot and thereby locked in inoperative position during such period as the cutting blade remains in operative position.
The timing device or ratchet 2% is spring actuated in one direction. As illustrated herein the stud has secured to it a cap 33 which houses a helical spring 3% which encircles the stud 25, one end of the spring being secured to the cap 33 and its opposite end to the rotatable timing device. The helical spring 84- acts to rotate the timing device in a COUnieF-ClOClUViSe direction as viewed in the drawings. The'rotatable timing device is irovided with a laterally extending stud 35 which engages the arm 26 and limits the counter-clockwise movement of the stud when the stud 32 ot'the detent located at or near the closed end of the cam slot as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. The rotatable timing device or ratchet 24 is provided with peripheral teeth 36 which may extend continuously around the ratchet dish, or as illustrated herein may be in the form of two sets 36 and 37, one set being adapted to be engaged by an actuating mechanism and the other by a suitable locking dog. The ratchet disk or timing device is rotated by a pawl-38 which is mounted upon the stud 12 which extends laterally from the heel 10 of the movable cutting blade. The pawl which is illustrated in detail in Fig. 6 comprises a relatively heavy f-shaped tooth having a cylindrical portion 39 which is rotatably mounted upon the stud 12 and is provided with a slot 40 which receives a pin %1 mounted in the stud 12. The pin ll serves to limit the movement of the pawl. The pawl 38 is nor mally held in engagement with the ratchet by a helical spring %2 which encircles the stud 12 and has one end anchored in the and its other end anchored in a cap l3 which is adjustably secured to the end oi the stud 12. It is obvious that the reciprocation of the movable cutter when its heel is engaged by the lay will cause the pawl 38 to engage the teeth 36 of the rotatable timing device or ratchet and rotate the same in a clockwise direction.
Retrograde movement of the ratchet may be prevented in any suitaliile manner. As illustrated herein it is prevented by a lookingdog 414-. which is pivotally mounted upon a stud projecting laterally from the arm 26 which carries the rotatable timing device. The dog is held in engagement with the teeth 37 of the ra chet by a heli *al spring 46 which surrounds the stud and at one end engages the hub of the pawl and at its other end a cap ell which is adjush ably secured to the end of the stud do.
In order to release the timing device and thereby permit it to rotate under the in tluence of its spring 3i means are provided for disengaging the pawl 41st from the ratchct when the detent is raised out of operative position. This is accomplished in the present embodiment of the invention by a lever 4-8 which is pivotally mounted at one end upon a stud 49 projecting from the temple 'stand and is provided at its other end with a lateral extension 50 which underlies the locking dog 4 1. The detent 13 is provided with a laterally extending stud 51 which underlies the lever 48 preterably about midway of its length and when the detent 12-3 is raised engages the lever 48 and rocks it about its pivot thus raising the end which underlies the pawl 4A and thereby raises the pawl id out of engagement with the teeth SET-oi the ratchet ot' the timing device.
In the normal operation of the loonithe hooked end 1% of the detent normally ongages the stud 12 and holds the movable cutting blade out oft operative position against the operation of the spring ll which normally tends to project the cutter into operative position ee Fig. 2). lVhen the detent is thus in operativecutter-engaging-- position the stud 32 of the detent is located in the open end or mouth 31 of the cam slot 30 as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. Upon call for transfer the controller rod 2 is rotated by the changing mechanism of the loom in a eoun tor-clockwise direction thus raising the offset end of its arm 22 into engagement with the stud 21 upon the detent 13, thereby raising the detent out of engagement with the stud 12. During the continued upward movement of the controller arm the stud 32 upon the detent 18 is raised into engagement with the inner wall otthe concentric portion of the can slot 30 and upon further up ward movement of the detent raises the timing device as permitted by its pivotally mounted supporting arm'thereby raising the teeth of the ratchet from engagement with the pawl 38. When the pawl is thus disenga ed the rotation produced by it; spring 42 is limited by the engagement of the pin ll with the end of the s ot in wh' 11 it is located. As the detent 13 is raised o the controller arm its stud 51 eng es the lever 48 and swings it about its pivot 4-5) thereby raising its offset free end into enlt o 118 concentric portion of the cam slot passes over the stud 32 until the stud is positioned adjacent to the closed end of the cam slot as illustrated in Jigs. 1 and 3. After the rotative movement of the controller rod 2 has thus initiated the action of the transferring mechanism of the loom the controller rod is rotated in a clockwise direction thus dopressing the arm and permitting the detent to descend toward its operative position. The descent of the detent, however, is lim ited hv the engagement of the extension 28 of the arm which supports the timing device with the lug upon the temple stand so that the parts are arrested immediately after transfer in the po ition illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 with the closed end of the cam slot in substantially horizontal position and supporting the detent in the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 out of the path of n'ioven'ient of the stud 12 on the heel of the cutter blade. TV hen in this position the teeth 36 of the ratchet are positioned in the path of the pawl 38 upon the stud 12 which projects from the heel of the movable cutter blade 10 which, it will be remembered, at this time, has been released and is projected to its operative position (as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3) by its spring 11.
The downward movement of the detent permits the descent of the lever -l8 which holds up the locking dog and restores the locking dog to engagement with the teeth 37 f the ratchet. ln'imediately a ter" transfer therefore the heel 10 of the movable cutting blade is positioned in the path of the lay and the cutter is actuated uponeach beat-up of the lay. As the cutting blade is thus reciprocated the pawl 38 engages successive teeth 36 of the ratchet of the timing device upon successive beat-up movements thus ro tating the timing device. Retrograde move ment of the timing device is prevented by the engagement of the locking dog 1% with the successive teeth 37 of the ratchet, as the timing device is intermittently rotated by the reciprocating pawl 38.
The ratchet may be provided with any desirable nmnber of teeth 3-8 corresponding to the number of beat-ups desired to insure severance of the filling end which extends from the selvage of the web after transfer. This intermittent rotation of the timing device or ratchet 21 in a clockwise direction gradually moves the concentric portion of the cam to the position in which its open end or mouth 31 is presented downwardly thereby releasing the stud of the detent l3 and permitting the end of the detent to drop into the path of the stud 12 of th heel of the cutter blade. The hooked por tion 1 1 of the detent thereupon engages the stud either as the detent drops or is caused to engage the stud upon the next beat-up of the lay as the stud 12 will eng-a 'e the rounded end of the detent upon the next beat-up and raise the detent so that it will drop over the stud at the end of such beatup. Thus the detent again caused to engage the stud 12 of the movable cutter blade and retain cutter blade in inoperative position until said detent is again released upon the next call for trai'isfer. The longitudinal adjustability of the detent permits the detent to be accurately positioned with respect to the field of travel of the stud upon the heel of the movable cutter blade and also facilitates the manufacture and proper assembly of the parts as will be readily recognized by those skilled in the art.
While the mechanism is illustrated herein as comprising a detent adapted to engage a stud upon the heel of a reciprocating and rocking cutting blade, it will be understood that the mechanism may be adapted to enand withhold from operative position any other form of thread parting device to which it is adaptable. struction above described the thread parting device is held in inoperative position during the normal weaving operation of the loom and is released upon call for transfer and thereafter actuated such predetermined number of times as will insure the severance of the filling end before being again locked in inoperative position.
The mechanism herein described for controlling the intermittent operation of the thread parting device is readily adaptable to usual types of looms and is of a rigid construction which will not be easily broken or damaged by the rough usage to which it is submitted during the operation of the loom.
It will be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is of an illustrative character and is not restrictive and that various changes in form, construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
1. In aloom comprising automatic filling replenishing mechanism, a temple stand, a temple having a movable thread parting device operable by or through the movement of the lay, resilient means tending to hold said parting device in operative position, a

2, In a loom comprising automatic filling replenishing mechanism, a temple stand, a temple having a movable thread parting device operable by or through the movement of the lay, resilient means tending to hold said parting device in operative position, a detent mounted on said temple stand normally positioned to engage said parting device upon the beat-up of the lay and thereafter to retain said parting device in moperative position, means operable by the changing mechanism of the loom upon call for transfer for releasing said detent from engagement with said parting device, a spring actuated rotatable timing device movable with said detent having means for withholding said detent from engagement with said parting device and means operable by a predetermined number of movements of the lay following transfer for rotating said timing device in opposition to its spring to restore said detent to engagement 'ith said parting device.
3. In a loom comprising automatic filling replenishing mechanism, a temple stand, a temple having a movable thread parting device operable by or through the movementof the lay, resilient means tending to hold said parting device in operative position, a detent mounted on said temple stand normally positioned to engage said parting device upon the beat-up of the lay and thereafter to retain said parting device in inoperative position, a timing device comprising a ro-' tatable ratchet wheel having a locking device to engage said detent, a pawl on said Jmovable parting device positioned to engage said ratchet upon the beat-up of the lay and rotate said ratchet intermittently in one direction, a spring tending to rotate said ratchet wheel in the reverse direction and means operable by the changing mechanism of the loom upon call for transfer to release said detent from engagement with said parting device and simultaneously to release said ratchet wheel whereby it will be rotated by its spring and its locking device caused to engage said detent and lock it in inoperative Posi iQn iiil lea d y the int iment replenishing mechanism,

whereby it will be rotated by its spring in said reverse direction and its cam caused to lock the detentin inoperative position until released by a predetermined number of said intermittent rotativc movements of the ratchet.
5. In a loom comprising automatic filling; replenishing mechanism, a temple stand, a temple having a movable thread parting device operable by or through the movement of the lay, resilient means tending to hold said parting device in operative position,'a detent mounted on said temple stand normally positioned to engage said parting device upon the beat-up of the lay and thereafter to retain said parting device in inoperative position, an arm pivotally supported upon the temple stand having mounted. thereon a rotatable timing device provided with lockingmeans to engage said detent and a ratchet wheel intermittently rotatable in one direction by the movement of the parting device, means operable by the'changing mechanism of the loom temporarily to raise said detent from engagement with said parting device and simultaneously to release said timing device and a spring acting to rotate said timing device in a reverse direction, when thus. released, whereby its locking means will retain said detent out of engageiient with said parting device until restored by a predetermined number of intermittent rotative movements of said timing device.
6. raise said detent from engagement with the stud upon said cutter thereby releasing; the cutter and through the stud on said detent raising the timing device and simultaneously actuating the lever to release said dog, whereby the spring of the timing device will rotate the timing device in th reverse direction and cause the cam slot in the timing device to lock the detent in inoperative position and to retain said detent in inoperative position after restoration of the controller arm to normal position until said ratchet is given a predetermined number of intermittent rotative movements by the reciprocation of said cutter.

the lay and resilient means tending to hold said parting device in operative position; a so nal longitudinally adjustable detent pivotally mounted on said temple stand to engage said parting; device upon a beat-up oi the lay and thereafter to retain it in inoperative position, means operable by the changing; mechanism of the loom for releasingr said detent from said parting device, a spring actuated rotatable timing device, means operable by the movement of said detent when released from said parting device to permit said timing device to be rotated, by its spring, in one direction, and cooperating locking means on said timing device and detent respectively operable by such rotation to engage and retain said detent out of engagement with said parting device and means operable by the movement of said parting device to rotate said timing device intermittently in the reverse direction whereby a predetermined number of such movements will unlock said detent and permit it to engage said parting device.
