To all whom it may concern: Be it knownthat I, Lmoonn til?- v LINCOLN H. GLEMENTS, OF CLEMENTS, MINKESQTA oovnsiuon son mrrsnnar-consusrroie enemies application filed August 24, 1925. Serial 723:0. 51,3952.
H. em-
turns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clements, in the county of 'Redwood s and State of Minnesota, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Governors for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ,govern'ors for internal combustion engines and the primary object is to provide an eilicientand practical governor which is particularly adapted for use in connection with an internal combustron engine wh ch has been removed from a; motor for stationary power purposes.
vehicle and is subsequently used Further and. more specific objects will be disclosed in the course of the following specification,
reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
' Figure 1 is a side elevation of a Ford engine, removed from its chassis, and showing the applicationj' of my improved governor thereto.-
Figure A, v 2 is a plan view of the governor and a part of the engine ason the line 2--2 inFigure Figure line 3--3 Referring to the 3 is a sectional elevation as. on the in 'Fig. 2.
drawings more particu larly and by reference characters A designates the bustion engine'having a crank case B,
cured by block or body of an internal com:
bolts C, an intake manifold D, a
carbureter E, having the usual butterfly valve F and a fan G having a shaft H provided with a pulley J (driven by a'belt, not shown), all of common and well known construction.
bushings Secured upon the engine, preferably by two of the b olts G, is a standard 4, having a tubular upper portion 5, in the ends ofwhich are arranged a pair of hearings or 6. An elongated sleeve or hollow 6 and is prejvented from moving 1ongitudi= nally by upon the a pair of collars 8 and 9 having respective set screws 10 and 11. Integralformed with the collar 9 is a Pulley 12 adapted to be driven by a belt 13 secured fan shaft H.
Slidably secured within and extending rearwardly from the sleeve 7 is a rod lei having a of cent.
ly secured head piece 15, A pair gally actuated weights-or balls 16 are connected by links 1'? and. 18, respeciive As the set screw 23, operates in a stationary member a it is obvious, and considered as an important feature of this invention, that the regulating or adjusting of the governor may be'accorn1. lished while it is in motion and when the engine is running, The spindle 7 is preferably lubricated by means ofan oil or grease cup 28, secured. upon the standard as shown.
The head member i5 .i rear end with a tapered r cess 23, in which engages'the pointed end of a rod 24 The rear end of this rod is pivotally secured to the crank arm 25 of a butterfly valve 26 in a manifold D. The rod 2% is held against vibration and in constant engagement in the recess by a spring 2'? which acts against the crank-arm 25.
,In operating the "engine its speed is first adjusted, when running idle, by manipulating the valve F, in the usual manner. Gr its normal or desired speed may be manually changed by adjusting this valve even after the motor is put to work. The object of the governor, however, is to so control the valve 26 that the adjusted speed of the motor will be automatically maintained regardless of the stress or resistance to which the engine is subjected. Thus, when the engine is, for any reason, slowed up the weights it will close in, spreading the-diced 15 away from the sleeve 7 and thus actuating the member s provided in its 24: in a direction wl'iich will open the valve 26 and thus permit a greater volume of gas to be introduced into the combustion cylin- 1 ders, with the result of increased accelerat t on ot the engine's speed, And, when, for instance the motor is removed from work-- ing duty, and has a tendency to speed, then the centrifugal action ot the weights will efi'cct; a closing of the valve 26 to reduce the volume of gas and thus slow up the motor. To reduce or increase the normal working speed or power of the engine, when distance is running, it is only necessary to release v new and desire to protect by Letters Patent 1. A governor forinternal combustion engines. comprising a standard secured to the engine on one side thereof, and having a goose neck extension forming a U-shaped opening, in its forward end. a sleeve rotatably secured in the standardand extending with its fore end into said opening, means on said fore end of the sleeve for rotating the same, a Weight-actuated rod in the sleeve and associated with a gas valve in the englue, a spr ng in the sleeve for resisting the forward motion of the rod, and a set screw threaded in said goose neck extension and extending into the sleeve for adjusting said spring.
2. A governor for internal combustion en gines, comprising. a standard secured to the engine on one side thereof, and having a goose neck extension forming a U-shaped opening in its forward end, a sleeve rotatahly securedin the standard and extending with its fore end into said opening, means on said fore end of the sleeve for rotating the same, a weight actuated rod in the sleeve and associated with a gasv valve in the engine, a spring in the sleeve for resisting the v forward motion of the rod, and a set screw threaded in said goose neck extension and extending into the sleeve for adjusting said spring, said set screw having a lock nut, which, when released. will permit the set screw to be adjusted when the governor is in motion.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
