Application m September :4, 924. Serial n. 799,119.
1 '0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NORMAN M. SMALL a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesboro, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Compressors for Gases, of w ich the following is a specification..-
My said invention relates to compression 0 linders for ammonia or other gases, and t e principal object thereof is to provide variable clearance pockets communicating with the cylinder for regulating the capacity of the compressor.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a art hereof and on which similar reference c aracters indicate similar parts:
Figure l is a vertical section on line 1-1 of Figure 2; and
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates the base of the compressor which is provided with a cylinder 11 containing a any conventional or piston 12 operated b desired means throug a connecting rod 13. The cylinder is provided with end closures ll, l5, and 16 of conventional or of any desirable character and has suction openings 17 and 18 and dischar e openings 19 and 20, the suction and disc arge openings being duplicated atthe oposite ends of thecylinder as shown in Figure 2. The discharge manifold is indicated at 21 and'the discharge pipe is connected to a flange shown at 22.
A variable clearance pocket is provided at each end of the cylinder each of, these pockets consisting of a secondary or subsidiary cylinder 23 opening into the main cylinder and closed at the outer end by a plate 24.
The plate 24 has a central openin for a rod 25 having at its outer end a ban wheel 26 and at its inner end a piston plunger 27 fitting closely in the cylinder and tapered at its lower end to match the taper of the opening in the wall of the main cylinder so that the pocket may be practically closed and put out of use. The rod 25 is secured to the plun er 27 to move therewith and is provide at 28 with a threaded portion cooperating with threads in the longitudinal opening of the plate 24 for raising or lowering the plunger.
. its pressure is below that of the suctiongas before the suction valves will open aud edmitgas from the suction line. The gas in the clearance pocket in expanding partly fills the main cylinder thus reducing the charge of fresh gas that can be drawn from the suction line and consequently reducing the capacity of the condenser, the action being, of course, similar at both ends of the same cylinder; While the capacity of the clearance to the nee s of the case it is intended that the space shall be large enough to permit a maximum reduction 'of approximately 50% in the capacity of the compressor.
l have shown and described a referred embodiment of. the invention but it will be obvious .to those skilled in the art that many chan es can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, therefore I do notv limit myself to the specific embodiment shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A compressor for as comprising a cylinder, a piston, a cylin rical clearance pock et opening into the cylinder adjacent the end-of the stroke of the iston, and a plunger in the cylindrical c earance pocket adjustable lengthwise thereof Without stopping the compressor to vary the rate of operation of said compressor, substantially as gockets may be varied according inder, a piston, a clearance pocket opening into the cylinder adjacent the end of the working stroke of the piston said pocket extending radially outward from the cylinder, and a plunger adjustable longitudinally of the clearance pocket without interrupting the action of the compressor to provide a variable chamber underneath said plate for varying the rate of operation of the compressor, substantially as set forth.
4; In a gas compressor, a cylinder, a piston, a branch cylinder extending from the main cylinder, a tapered passage leading throu h the cylinder wall from said branch cylin er, and a plunger adjustable lengthwise of the branch cylinder to provide a variable clearance pocket for varying the rate of operation of the compressor said plunger having a tapered extension adapted to close said tapere passage. substantially as set forth. 4
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Waynesboro, Pennsylvania this 23rd day ofiseptember, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-four.
