Application 111m May, 1a, was. Serial m. 31,134.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON MATZNER, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of the city of New York, borough 5 of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Surface Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to surface protecting devices constituting an improved means carried by a supportingbase for preventing the scatching or marring of the surface upon which the base sets.
At the present time the supporting bases oflamps, telephones, smoking stands or other similar articles are usually of hollow construction presenting an annular bead or' rim within which a felt covered pad element is received and from which the same partially projects to. rovide a padded surface protecting means or the base. In practice it has-been found that such means in addition to the expense and labor involved in their production and association with the bases are open to the objection that they collect dust, dirt and grit and'require in a short period of time renewal due to the fact that their wearing qualities are not ofthe highest.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a surface protecting means for attachment to a base which in addition to performing its function in a better and more facile manner, renders the de vice less expensivefin its production and association with the base while materially increasing its length of usefulness.
With .the above recited and other objects in view, reference is 'had to the following specification and drawings in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention which is in no way intended as a limitation upon the scope of the appended claims as it is to be clearly understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of said claims may be resorted to when found expedient.
In the drawings Figure 1 -is a vertical sectional view through a portable fixture base equipped with a surface protecting device constructed in accordancewith the invention.
F ig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference A designates a base of hollow formation which produces the usual depending annular rim or head B. In lieu of inserting and securing within the lower open end of the base a felt covered member under the common practice, a strip 10 conforming ber. The covered. strip is positioned within the rim B with one of its edges projecting below the lower edge of the rim or bead B and the same is preferably held and main tained in such position by means of a plurality of screws 12 which extend transversely through the strip and its covering and threadedly engaged in threaded openings 13 in the strip 10. The screws are provided at their inner ends with kerfs Hand at their outer ends with pointed terminals 15 which are adapted to bite into the inner surface of the rim or head B thereby preventingrelative turning or axial movement of the surface protector with respect to the head. It is of course understood that in circular bases the stri 10 will assume the general shape of a split ring while in noncircular bases the strip conforms to the shape or configuration of the base.
From the foregoing it will thus be seen that an extremely simple yet highly efficient surface protector has been provided which may be manufactured cheaply and which may be connected or associated with the base in a minimum time. It is also obvious that the device when its lower wearing edge is worn may be removed and inverted thereby doubling the length of life or usefulness of the same.
I claim:
1. The combination with a supporting .base having a depending marginal rim, of a surface protecting device for preventing the scratching or marring of the surface upon which the base rests, comprisin a resilient strip of material, a tubular yieldable covering thereover, radially adjustable elements extending through the strip and covering and pointed terminals at the outer end of said elements adapted to loite into the inner periphery of the rim for maintaining the strip in place with the thickness of the covering projecting beyond' the lower edge of the rim.
2. The combination with a supporting base having a depending marginal rim, of a surface protector therefor comprising a split metallic strip of resilient material conforrm ing substantially to the configuration of the rim, an elastic tubular covering fitted over said strip, set screws having pointed outer terminals extending through the strip and covering and threaderlly engaging the strip for effecting a biting engagement of the pointed terminals with the inner face of the rim to removably maintain the protector in place against circumferential or axial movements and to permit of the reversal thereof "when the surface contacting portion is Worn.
SIMON MATZNER.
