Application filed may 13, 1925. Serial No. 29,887.
To aZZ 'whom 'it may concern:
'Be it known that I, MATTHEW RUSSELL BERGER, a citizen of' the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Phila- 5 delphia and State of Pennsylvania, have in- 'Vented a certain new and useful Gutter- HangerfCircle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention, generally stated, relates` to W gutter hanger circles and has more especial relation to that type of circle arranged for adjustable engagement with a shank of channel-bar formation.
As generally practiced it is now custom- 155 ary to stamp a circle from a single sheet of Wrought iron, for instance of the type shown in my Letters Patent No. 1,368,539, dated Feb. 15, 1921. However, by `this means a great Waste of material ensues, and the finished circle is not as efficient as desired in that it may become distorted by workmen in installation. That is, a circle may be bent .laterally considered. Y
Therefore, one object of the present invention may-be said to reside in the provision of an adjustable gutter hanger circle of integral structure made from stock wrought metal for instance iron of T-sha-ped cross-section inl order to reduce cost of production. Another object is to provide a circle of the character stated which will materially resist lateral distortion and provide a generally 'stronger circle. Still another object is to providea circle of the character stated the web of Which has a heel portion provided with an apertured rib the web top being sheared oil' and the flanged party of the rib being bent inwardly to form a gutter catch. f
Still another object is to provide a circle of the character Vstated in which a relatively broad, shank bearing surface is provided adjacent the heel portion of the circle'so ythat the circle in adjusted position may be more rigidly sustained.
. Other and further objects not at this time appearing will be hereinafter referred to.
The invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and-fnall claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully un erstood from the' following description taken in connection with the accompanying vthe web is aperturd as at 5. The extreme drawings forming part hereof, and in which;v
Fig. 1, is a view in side elevat-ion of a circle of the invention shown as attached to a shank.
Fig. 2, is a view in cross-section taken upon the line 2-,2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3, is a view in section taken upon the line 3 3 of. Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of a slightly modified form of circle; and
Fig. 5, is a View in section taken upon thc line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention l have shown in .the accompanying drawings two forms thereof which are at present preferred by\me, since the same have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood `that the various instrumentalities of whichl my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Referring to the drawings in detail and with more especial relation to Figs. 1 to?, inclusive, the 'numeral 1 designates a gutter hanger circle made in one piece from stock T-iron, or copper or brass and comprised of a vertical web 2 and a horizon-tal gutter-seat 3 extending at right angles to the web and upon opposite sides thereof. The outer end of the web is provided with a hook-shaped catch 4 and the opposite 0r heel portion ofl endv of the heel is sheared ol' at 6 and that part of the gutter seat remaining is bent over to form a catch 7 In practice the heel of the circle is arranged perpendicularlv, as designated by numeral 8.' That part of the circle web which constitutes the circle heel has formed thereon a vertical rib 9. By this construction it is seen that upon one side of the web forming the circle heel there is provided a relativel broad bearing surface designated 10 as ormed by the perpendicular part of the gutter seat immediately adjacent the circle heel. The purpose of this bearing surface will presently appear.
The shank to which a circle of the above type may be vreadily attached is disclosed inA Figs.l 1, 2, and 3,. isy made of channelbar and designated 11. 'It is apertured at- 'l2 to correspond with the apertures in the heel of the circle, receives the rib of the circle and the two are secured togetlier by a bolt i3 in desired adjusted position. The top of the shank is provided with a fastening plate lei'. rllhis type of shank forms subject matter of lietters Patent granted to me under date of September 19, 1922, and is numbered LLLQQstSZ. However, my novel form of circle is capable of use with different forms of Shanks, the type dislosed being for illustrative purposes. lt is seen that with the rib of the circle accommodated within the channel-bar forming the shank that the bearing surface of the heel of the circle previously described abuts against the outer perpendicular edge 'l5 of the shanlr, see Fig. i2. This provides a very efficient attachment and tends to prevent sagging of the circle which is most important. lt is readily apparent that without this bearing surface there is a tendency for a circle, under` Weight ofa gutter, to sag by moving around the pivot point formed by the securing bolt.
' This my novel form of seating parts overcomes. Also, in installation workman cannot distort the circle because of its great strength which is another important factor.
l? or some types of gutters it is necessary to have the gutter catch in a position lower than that disclosed in Fig. l. Such a struc ture shown in Figs. 4 and 5 wherein the ianged parts of the heel has struck `out therefrom a pair of gutter catches designated 1G although obviously may only provide one such catch. It is of course understood that with the gutter catches so arranged shearing ott' of the heel top is dispensed with.
lt will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enume ated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while l have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiments Lerares thereof which have been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of modification in various particu lars Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacriicing any of.
its advantages.
MWhat l claim is:
l. A gutter-hanger circle comprising an integral structure formed from wrought metal of T-shaped crosssection bent to form a vveb having extended from each side thereof a flanged part forming a gutter seat, the heel part. of which is perpendicularly arranged, a rib bent out from the heel part of said Web said rib being apertured, and a gutter catch bent out from the circle heel at its top said catch being formed'by first shearing off the top of said web and then forming the catch from the part remaining.
2. ln a gutter hanger, an apertured shank of channel-bar including its complement fastening device, one piece circle formed of Wrought metal of T-shaped cross-section, the heel part of Which circle is perpendicularly arranged and provided with a rib for engaging in said channeLbar, said rib being apertured in register with the apertures of said shank, and a bolt for securing the circle and shank together, the heel of said circle having a relatively broad bearing surface for abutting against the outer face of said shank.
A gutter hanger circle comprising an integral flanged structure, whose flange forms a gutter seat, the heel part of which is perpendicularly arranged, a rib bent out from the heel part of said web, said rib being apertured, and a gutter catch formed from said iange, the material of the remaining part of the structure coextensive with the catch being sheared off. y
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name.
MATTHEW RUSSELL BERGER.
