CARL BJOIR-K, OF WILMINGTON, CALIFORNIA.
ENGINEERS AND nnarrsmans LoosEmnAr SKETCH AND PRINT CASE.
Application filed December 28, 1921. Serial No. 525,368.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL BJORK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of Los Angelesand State of California, have invented a new and use-- holder, engineers or draftsmans case, loosev leaf case, card holder, printing'frame for blue prints or photographs and draftsmans table and'T-square. v d
An object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to hold loose leaf memoranda or other sheetsflat and to protect the same; to provide for convenience of inserting and withdrawing the sheets from the case; to provide a satisfactory combined cover and closure for the case; to'also provide a satisfactory rain andsun shield'for the exposed sheet when the case is open; to provide means whereby an engineer or draftsman may facilitate his work in the open field.
The invention is not limited to the use of engineers or draftsmen as will appear from the accompanying description.
The case may be .made of any size or shape and of anysuitable material.
The case is also adapted to hold drawing instruments and artists colors.
The invention is'broadly new, basic. and pioneer in that I provide a case one end and the top of which are mainly open and pro vide a platform or follower inside such case adapted to hold the leaves flat against ledges at the edges of the open top and a cover is provided to close the open end and cover the open portion of the open top, and also to serve as a T-square in connection with the sides or closed end of the case.
Cheapness and simplicity of construction are other objects. V
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear'from the accompanying drawing, the'subjoined detail description and the appended claims." a The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention. p
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the in? vention in use as an engineers or draftsmans sketching pad. Parts are broken away toexpose interior construction.
' Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the .caseshowing the cover adjusted as a sun or rain shade, portions being broken away to con tract the view.
' F is an end View of the parts as shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an end View showing the platform or follower located; in position to release the loose leaves of the tablet.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing the case used in desk form. I
Fig. 6 is 'a plan View of the case with the cover in place.
Fig. 7 is a bottom plan of the follower. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 00 Fig.6.
' Fig. 9 is a fragmented end View showing a modified form of means'to hold the follower in leaf releasing position.
Fig. 10 is a plan view. of the cover in use as a T-square and adapted tobe slid along the longitudinal sides of the holder.
Fig. 11 isa' planview of the cover in use as a T-square and adapted to be slid along the closed endof the holder. I
The case is of the open top typeand is preferablyconstructedrectangular in shape with a solid bottom ,1, parallel solid side walls 2 and a solid end wall 3. The end opposite the end wall'S is'provided with an opening 4 almost coextensive with the space between the side walls 2.. Inward extensions or end retainers 5 extend froni the free ends of the side walls and serve as retainers to hold the angular end projection 6 of the cover 7 said end projection G is formedfat right angles to the cover 7 andis rectangu lar in shape and forms an end closure for the open end of the case between said extensions, and said cover 7 is also adapted to close the opening 8 in the top ofthe case which opening is enclosed by the marginal ledges 9 that form a frame around the opening 8, and are secured to the end and side walls of the case. Inside the case a platform or follower 10 is resiliently supportedand arranged to operate toward and from the marginal ledges 9" and is adapted to .fric- .tionally hold atablet 11 between its upper surface and said marginal ledges. It being understood that the tablet 11 may be a plu- .rality of loose leafs or other construction well known in the art.-
Bow springs 12 having their ends formed with, upturned runners 13 are fixed to the underside of the follower and are adapted to pass through the space between the inward extensions or end retainers 5. The spaces 14 lo\v the tablet tted to and to be above the end retainers 5 or loose lea'ls 11 to be adnn withdrawn from the case.
Means are provided whereby theplatjornl or follower 10 may be easily and securely locked or held in theleaf releasing position or away from the marginal ledges, and these means are preterablyin the term oi? a catch 15 fixed to and extending; down from the middle ol the follower. and a movable latch 16 which may be readily shifted to and from the path of the catch when the follower is fully pressed in. EBaid latch, asyshmvn in Figs. 1, 3, t and 8 comprises a roller 1'? movable by gravity along two w; s 111% formed by the straps l9 that are tired to the bottom 1 of the case.
{The roller 17 is arranged to roll from end to end of the Ways according as the case tilted from one side to the other and when the latch .roller rollsto one side it is in the path o'lf the catch and when it is rolled to other side it is out oi the path of the en t InFig. 9 I have shown a n'iodilied rlorrn oi latch \rl'iieh comprises a roller 17 movable by gravity along two ways 18 in the llan. es 19 that are fixed to the bottom olf the case.
Pencil holders 520 are also shown cemiected to the follower and the same comprises a single strip of spring metal lined hyfla central pivot 21 to the il ellower betwetai the two bends 22, which are at each ondof said strip and adapted to :lCCOIlHHOLlzItQ a pencil be" tween the spring strip and the follower so that a pencil or other drawing instrument may be inserted and will be held by the spring against the :lollower. Artists cohns or other drawing instruments may he held by the bends 22 as desired.
Various derices may be used in combine tion with this appliance, as for instance, a transparelnz protractm' 23 may be inst-r1 I on the cover 7 and provided with holes through which a pencil point may be in sorted for the purpose 0t marking points and drandng linesin a well known manner; for the purpose oil? clmrnees only a low or the degree lines are shown. it being apparent that any number of desired markings maybe made without departing from the spirit off the invention.
The cover is preferably provided along; its edges with scales Q5 26 and may be made transparent as of celluloid and the marginal ledges 9 may also. be provided 'Wi'h scales 2?, 28. It desired, the protracior may be made on a separate sheet and inserted in the case.
The angular end projection G which forms the end closure for the open end of the case alsoserres to support the at a desirable angle for Writing when the pad or ea is laid upon a table.
The end retainers 5 are also adairted to receive and hold the cover 7 in position so as to term a rain and sun shield for the exposed sheet when the case is open, as shown in Fig.
llfhetnseoit the device as a photographic printing frame obvious from the foregoing, the ":tolhraer being adapted to be pressed in by pressure oi the thumbs or lingersthercon'and. the latch means engaged to hold the follower in pressed-in position to allow the tracing or transparent sheet above the chemical paper to be inserted into the case, then the ollower will be released.
.llhe cover has a further advantage .of being; used in conneijrtion with a compass, :not shown. as a cross bearing :lfor obtaining'ships positions at sea. This is attained by inserting a point, not shown in the central hole ot the protractor i2 5 and ii'lsertingotl'ier points not shown, in desired holes of the 1 )I.'Olil'2lt0l to bear on ltnownlandobjeets.
The ctwer has a further advantage in that it is adapted to be inserted between'the tablot 11 and the marginal ledges?) and maybe withdrawn predetermined. distance sons to expose for use a small st rip of tlie'tablct. The cover when used in this manner serves as a. guide for writing andalsoprelents soiling the tablet which oilenthnes occurs by rest ing' soiled hands upon the ti'iblet during writing; operation.
