CUTTER Filed July 2'7, 1925 I I Jm/mM/m(4. mam;
WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 9, 1926.
UNITED STATES JOHN M. RAUHA, JR, OF OWEN, WISCONSIN.
CUTTER.
Application filed July 27, 1925. Serial No. 46,415.
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. RAUHA, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owen, in the county of Clark and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cutters especially adapted for opening bundles of silage and has for an object the provision of a device which will engage and clamp the twine or other material to he cut, so as to securely hold the same in position for the blades of the cutter.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a combined cutter and clamp which is simple in construction, reliable in use and by means of which material may be prevented from slipping alongside the edge of the blades during the cutting operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to 'be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 s a view at right angles to Figure 1. V
Figure 3 is a view looking at the reverse side from that shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the cutter which constitutes the present invention comp-rises a main jaw 10 having. a handle 11 rigid therewith and a cutting blade 12 which extends along one edge and beyond one face of the jaw,
-the latter providing one member 13 of a pair of clamping jaws, as will be herein after explained.
Extending from the handle 11 is a'spaced pair of ears 14 and pivotally mounted upon a pin 15 whose opposite ends are secured within these cars is a jaw 16 from which extends a cutting blade 17 Tlhis blade cooperates with the blade 12. The shank 16 carries a handle 18 which is located upon one side of and spaced from the handle 11 being yieldingly forced outward from said handle 11 by a spring 19.
Extending from the handle 11 opposite one of the ears 14 is an car 20 and pivotally mounted upon this ear upon a pivot pin 21, is a clamping jaw 22 which cooperates with the aw 13 provided by one face of the main jaw 10 so as to form a clamp. Pivotally mounted upon an ear 23 which extends from one side of the handle 11 is a handle 24 whose inner end is pivotally secured to the jaw 22 as indicated at 25. A spring 26' secured to the handle 11 bears against the adjacent face of the handle 24 and holds the latter outward.
In the use of the invention relative inward movement of the handles 18 and 2 1 will cause the jaws 22 and 13 to clamp between them the material to be cut so that the latter is positively held for the cutting action of the blades 12 and 17 The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. A cutter comprising a main jaw, a handle rigid with said jaw, a cutting blade extending along one edge of the jaw beyond one face of the latter, a handle pivotally mounted on the handle of the main jaw, a cutting blade rigid with the pivotally mounted handle and cooperating with the first mentioned blade, a clamping jaw pivotally mounted upon the handle of the main jaw and cooperating with the latter for clamping the material to be out and means whereby the cutting blades and clamping jaws may be simultaneously operated.
2. A cutter comprising a main j aw, a handle rigid with said aw, a cutting blade extending along one edge of the jaw beyond one face of the latter, a handle pivotally mounted on. the handle of the main jaw, a cutting blade rigid with the pivotally mounted handle and cooperating with the first mentioned blade, a clamping jaw pivotally mounted upon the handle of the main jaw and cooperating with the latter for clamping the material'to be cut, a pivotally mounted handle operatively associated with the clamping jaw and spring means for yieldingly holding the cutting blades and clamping jaws in open position.
In testimony whereof I affix m JOHN M. RA
si nature.
