MAGNE'IO-BRUSH AND FORCE-FEED ATTACHIHENT FOR INTERNAL-GOMBUSTIOIT h ENGINES.
V Application filed July 26, 1922. Serial No. 577,651.
To {ZZZ whom it may concern Be it rnown that I, KELLY. M. Tonnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Magneto-Brush and Force-Feed Attachments for internal- Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of thisinvention is to provide a satisfactory construction for that class of combined force teed oilersandcontact holders, adapted for internal combustion engines, to take the oil thrown by a magneto rotor from thebottom to the top of the transmission or reservoir case and to force such oil onward so that the'oil may flow to any bearing part of the engine desired."
In the type of force feed oilers to which this invention appertains the feeding de vice which catches the oil thrown from the ma neto rotor is arran ed at the hi 'hcst b t) i 3 point of the housing, containing such rotor and it is customary with many. engines to apply the magneto contact member at such elevated point; and an object of this invention is to provide an improved force feed oiler of simple and compact construction and arrangmenttobe inserted into the orifice ordinarily occupied by the fitting which carries the magneto contact member.
The invention consists-in a construction and arrangement of the contact holder and oil catching and deliverim device in which the contact member is contained in a hollow:
member that also contains a spring which acts upon the contact member to hold it in contact with thefixed element of the rotor assembly; the container being provided with a threaded stem which serves as a binding post and extends through the outer end ot the oil catcher and is insulated therefrom by simple, cheap and easily applied insr. ating washers or other suitable provision.
An object is to provide a device oi this kind which is easily manufactured and is certain in operationand will not get out of order.
Other objects, advantages and featurcsof invention may appear from the accompany ing drawing, the subjoined detail description and the appended claims.
open as at 3 hp or prolecti'on l to catchoil thrown front The invention may be constructed in various forms: I The accompanying drawing illustrates the lnventi on in a form at present deemed most desirable. a
igure 1 is a fragmental view showing a httmg constructed in accordance withfthis invention and applied to aninternal co1nbustio-n engine, fragments of which are shown. I i
Fig. 2 is a top alan of the device, dc
tached, with bolts in place."
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of said device, omitting the bolts. V y Fig' l is an axial section on linerl, Figs. 2 and'3 on an enlarged scale.
The fitting comprises a barrel 1 provided with an outlet 2 and having, its lower. end and provided with the usual and by the rotating portion'or member a of the magneto and to direct it into the barrel from which it flows through the outlet 2 intolthe oil pipe 5. The head or top t of the barrel 1 is provided with a central orifice 5 and with an insulating washer seat .6 on
the upper side of the barrel top, and anin' sulating washer seat 7 on theunderside of such top.. a V i Aflangc 8 at the bottom of the barrel and above the lip is provided with bolt holes 9 through which bolts 10 are; passed in the usual way to fasten the fitting to the engine housing h. The contact memberll is shown as a cylindrical plunger having a cylii'idrical head or enlargement 12 at one end and a contacting point 13 at the other end.
The contact holder is preferably cylin drical and comprises a casing Ll terminah mg at its upper and in shoulder is" and a threaded stem 15 which extends through the orifice 5in the top of the barrel and serves as a binding post for the electric wire w- A spring 16 is provided in the hollow contact holder to act upon the head 12 of the cont-act element to yieldingly hold such element extended and in contact with the contact element 0 of the magnetor stator ca.
The head 12 and body 11 tit the inside walls and the inner tip 17 of the hollow contact holder casing. by suitable means, as by swaging or by spin- Said tip is contracted ably to a sliding fit on the body of such The circumferences of the insulating wash ers 18, 19 preferably fit the washer seatsfi and 7 and are centrally arranged, and stem 15 and the holes 20 through the washers are of less diameter than the orifice 5 through the top of the barrel, and said stem preferably fits the holes 20 and is thus held free from contact with the barrel; and the contact holder is'fastened in place by a nut 21 screwed onto the stem 15, and against the outside washer 18, thus drawing the shoulder 14 of the casing tight against the inner washer 19 and the washers 18 and 19 tight against the top if of the barrel so that the contact member is held against lateral displacement relative to the barrel. 9 are conformed in position to the holes, not shown, originally provided in the housing to receive the bolts that fasten the usual contact holder in place.
In practice theliplt extends downward casing and down into the engine housing to catch the oil in th'eusual manner and the l operation of the contact member and of theoil delivery is practically the same as w th devices ofthis character heretofore known. The binding post nut 21 serves to bind I the wire to against the nut 21"and also to secure the attachment from arring loose.
I claim: p
