SPRING-OILING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be 1t known that I, FELIX HARTUNG, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at 4137 North Clark street, Chicago, in the f county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Spring-oiling Device, of Which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to devices for oiling springs and more particularly to devices whereby oil is applied to the spring in such manner as to seep between thev Fig. 4: is a bottom view of the up r or 130% member of the oiling device, an(

In its present embodiment the device is intended for use in connection with force feed oil cups or like mechanisml whereby oil is forcibly fed to the shackle bolt bearings of the spring. `Thepresent device receives and stores up the excess of oil from the spring-bearing and applies it directlyto the leaves of the spring, between which it seeps to effect proper lubricavtionothereof. 'l'lie present device is furthermore so constructed as to form a protective casing for the end of the spring and to prevent com tact of dust, dirt, water, etc., therewith.
Referring more particularly to thel drawings, 10 indicates a spring, only one end of whichis shown. The 'spring is constructed in the usual manner of a number of leaves 11-11 of successivelv increasing lengths, the longest 12 being provided with a. loop or eye into which is fitted the bushing 14 for the shackle bolt. A spring clip 15 is provided at. a dist-ance from the. end of the spring.
The oiling device consists essentially of 'a trough-like member 16 embracing the bot* tom and sides of the spring and a cover plate 17. These extend along the spring from the endV =to a point near the spring clip '15 and cover the ends of most 'of Athe 4 leaves of the spring.
The trough-like member' 16 is formed with a bottom 18 and two side members 19, 19., The bottom member 18 is curved upwardly at 20 around the eye 13 of the spring, the side members 19, 19 being cut away to expose the eye. It is provided with a felt lining 21 which extends along the bottom of the trough member 16 and upwardly around the eye of the spring to. a point substantially in alinement with a longitudinal diameter thereof, and which also lines the side members 19.
, The cover plate '17 is provided with downwardly extending side members 22 which t over the side member 19 of the troughmember 18. The*` cover plate 17 likewise extends forwardly over and partially around the eye 13 of the spring at 23, a small piece of felt lining 24 being inserted between the cover plate extension 23 and the spring eye 13. This piece of felt` lining extends upwardly to a point substantially opposite the lining 21 of the trough member.
The curved extension 23 of the cover plate is fitted underneath the curved extension 20 of the bottom ortrough member t0 protect the spring eye against dust, water, dirt, etc.
' To hold the assembled oiling device in position on the spring the cover plate side members 22 are provided with opposite ears 25, through the openingsin which are looped the ends of the coiled spring 26 which surrounds the bottom member 16.2. Any other suitable binding or holding means may obviously be utilized. The device, when assembled, completely surrounds the end of the spring and protects it against the entrance of foreign, injurious material.. u
The device is preferably utilized with force-feed oil cups, for example, of the type invented jointly by myself and Thos. G. Pihlfeld, and described in application Serial Number 250,406, filedAug. 17, 1918, the oil cup being applied to the shackle bolts of the spring. The excess of oil passes into the felt linings of the present oiling device,
which may, if desired, be previously satuin connection with a specific embodiment thereof, it is clearly understood that it is not limited by the details thereof illustrated and described except in so far as such limitations are included in the accompanying claims.
I claim: v
1. In a spring oiler, a trough-like member adapted to embrace the sides and bottom of the end of a spring and having a curved extension adapted to embrace a portion of the eye of the spring, a felt lining for said member and extension, and a cover plate covering the top of the spring and the trough-like member.

In a spring oiler, a trough-like member adapted to embrace the sides and bottom of the endv of a spring and having a curved extension adapted to embrace a portion of the eye of the spring, a felt lining for said member and extension, and a. cover plate covering the top of the spring and the trough-like member and having a curved extension extending over the eye of the spring and coperating with the extension of the trough-like member to cover the eye of the spring.
3. A spring protector comprisin a casing adapted to embrace the sides and ottom of the spring and having a curved extension adapted to embrace a portion of the eye of the spring, a. cover plate adapted to cover the top of the spring` and the casing, said plate having a curved extension adapted to embrace the remaining portion of the eye of the spring, the extenslon of the cover plate passing under the extension of the casing, and means for holding the casing and cover plate in assembled position on the sprin v FELIX HARTUN
