The above mechanisms are well understood and detailed description thereof is deemed unnecessary. platen 23 is mounted within a paper carriage com ris-,
ing end plates 31 which are connecte by an upper front cross rod 32, a lower cross plate 33, an intermediate lower cross rod -34 an -an upper cross bar 35. The carriage plates are also connected by a cross frame'36 provided with upper and lower shoulders 37 and 38 which embrace a fixed guide rail 39, the shoulders and rail being correspondingly grooved to afford runways for upper and lower sets of balls 40, the track and ball arrangement serving to reduce friction and permit the carriage, when released, to travel easily across the machine from right'to left under the ten- -sion of a suitable spring, not shown, in a manner well understood in the present art. The cross frame 36 has secured to its top an escapement bar 41 (see Figs. 7 and 10), which bar is provided on its rear edge with a plurality of stop teeth 42 spaced to cou form to the intendedcolumn arrangement of the page adapted to be imprinted by the mechanism. The escapementbar is designed to co-operate with upper and lower dogs 43 and 44 respectively. The lower dog is fixedly secured to the under side of a square rock shaft 45 which is journaled at its ends between the cars 46 of a bracket plate 47 fixedly secured to the frame of the machine at the rear of the paper carriage. The upper dog is slidably mounted upon the lower dog,-being provided with an. elongated slot 48. which receives a headed pin 49 "which.
co-acts with a stud 50 to guide the upper dog in its sliding movements across the up-- per face -of the lower dog.
The upper dog has connected thereto the spring 51 which is secured at one end to a stud 52' on the vrear end of the upper dog, and. on the other end to a hook 53 protruding from the plate 54 whicn is secured totheupper face of the rock shaft45. The tension of this spring actsin adirection counter to that of the spring which controls the escapement of the paper carriage, 'but since the spring 51 is of less tension, it will be distended when subjected to the stronger tension of the escapement spring.
The dogs 43 and 44 are provided with teeth 55 and '56 respectively, which teeth are aligned with one another when the upper dog is forced to the left, as in Fig. [7, y the contact of one of the escapement bar teeth with the'tooth 55 on the nnper dog.-
When, however, the rock shaft 45 is rocked upwardly, as indicated in Fig. 11, the tooth o the upper dog will be disengaged from the escapement bar tooth, but without releasing efi'ect thereon since the lifting of the dogs will bring the't-ooth of the lower '1 dog into engagement, but this lifting action will, by disengaging the tooth of the upper dog, allow the latter to spring to the right, as in F ig. 10, under the tension of the sprin 51, so that upon a return movement of t e rock shaft, the escapemen-t bar tooth will be definitely .released and the carriage moved one step tothe left and until the next succeedin tooth of the upper same from its free position shown in F ig. 10 to-its final or resting position shown in Fig. 7. ,The rockingmovements of the shaft 45 are effected through the action of the following mechanisms. While the marriage is stationary, the escapement dogs are held in lower position by the action of a cam 62 mounted on a shaft 63 which likewise furnishes a mounting for the type carriers, which shaft is rocked by the swinging of an arm 64 connected by a link 65 with a portion of the handle controlled mechanism (not shown), .so that on the forward movement of the handle the shaft 63, as viewed in Figs. 8 and 9, will be moved in a counter-clockwise direction which will turn the cam 62 from the position shown in Fig. 8 to the position shown in Fig. 11. The sha t 63 has loosely mounted thereon a normalizing cam which, when elevated as in Fig. 8, .will engage the roller 64, irrespective of the position of the'cam 62. The normalizing cam 65 has pivoted thereto ;a link 66, as shown in Figs. 1 and 15, which is pivoted,at its lower end to a normalizing lever (ET- which, in turn, is pivoted at its center to a cross shaft 68. The forward end 69 of the normalizing lever is bifurcated to receive a tongue 70 struck rearwardly from the upper arm of a bell crank lever 71 pivoted at its elbow to a bracket 72 secured to the front of the machine frame 73', as best shown in Fi,is.-14, 15 and 16.
The bell crank lever 71 carries a normalizing'knob173, located within convenient reach of the operator, and a stud 74 engaging a notched spring detent 74 adapted to hold the knob either in the position shown in Fig. 14,
which may be termed the tabulating position, or in the position shown in Fig. 16,
which may he termed the normalizing position. With the normalizing knob thrown to the left, as in Fig. 14. the upper end of the hell crank 71 will be lifted, thereby lift- ;-.ing the forward end of the normalizing lever ,67 which serves to draw down'the link 66 and thereby move the normalizing cam 65 out of contact with the roller 64, as indicated in mg. 11,.so that the roller will be free to swing forward when released by the rocking 0f the cam 62 to etlect an escapement of the carriage in cross. tabulating. When, however, the normalizing knob is thrown to the right, as in Fig. 16, an upward thrust of the liiik (56 will. be occasioned, and this will have the effect of throwing the cam 65 up-- thumb lever against the tension of the spring 7!) will tilt the rock shaft, as in Fig. 0, and thereby lift both the upper and lower escape-merit (logs above the plane of the escapcment bar, allowing the carriage to be manually adjusted to the desired position.
. At certain points in the cross travel of the carriage it is necessary to make provision for actuating the subtraction mechanisms, and for this purpose the carriage is rovided with a cam plate 80 which is adnstably supported from the rear upper cross bar 35 (see Figs. 1 and 2). The cam plate is provided at a suitable point with a ref-.1 ardly extending cam 81, best shown in Fig. which cam is adapted to co-actwith a roller 82 upwardly projecting from: an arm 83, which arm merges into a hub 84 bored to receive the upper-end of arertical shaft 85 which has entered 'theremto a headed stud S6. The hub is shouldered at the point to afford a point of contact for the lower end of a spring 88 which surrounds the headed stud 86. This arrangement permits the hub 84 to be slightly elevated by means of a knurled knob 89.
The hub 84 co-acts with a ring 90 which 7 is keyed to the shaft 85, and, as indicated in Fig. 2, the ring is provided with a tooth 91 which co-acts with either of a pair of notches 92 formed in l 1e lower face of the; hub, so that the latter may be turned to lock with thc"roller 82 in its forward position to engage the cam 81. as in Fig. 2, or to arearward position which throws the ipller out of the line of movement of" the cam. The vertical shaft- 85 has pinned thereto an inwardly projecting arm 93 which is entered through a slot 94. 'ina link 95-..which is pivoted at its rear end to a rocking lever 96 fulcrumed at the point 97 in a fixed" plate 98 and held retracted by the tension of a spring 90. 1
The forward end of the link 95 connects with the upper end of a lever 100 mounted no i S VAILA on the shaft 68. The lower end of the lever is connected by means of a link 102 with a crank arm 103 pinned on a rock shaft 104.
The rock shaft also carries a forwardly projecting arm 105 provided with a laterally protruding stu 106 which is. engaged by the upper edge of a; finger 107 secured to and rearwardly projecting from the upper end of a subtraction key lever 108, which finger is hooked over and pivoted upon a fired shaft 109 near the front of the machine. The finger works against the tension of the spring 110, and when the subtraction key is depressed, a forward swinging movementwill be imparted .to the arm 93 through the train comprising the arm 105, shaft 104, arm 103, link 102,-lever 100 and link 95, The subtraction key lever 108 engages the forward end of a lever arm 111 which is likewise pivoted upon the shaft 109. and between --the subtraction key lever and the lever arm is a lost motion connection consisting of pins 112 and slots '113,- the arrangement being such that when motion is manually im 'arted to the subtraction train from the su traction key, the lever arm 111' will be swung by engagement of the pinsand slots, but when the subtrac-' tion train is operated automaticall by the cross movement of the paper carriage, the movements of the train will not be .transmitted to the key. The arm 111 likewise is engaged by the stud 106 on its under side,
and its upper end extends to a. point im mediately behind 'a stud 114 carried by a 'finger115 at ,the forward end of a draw bar 116 guided by a stud 117 working in a slot 118.
The rear end of the draw bar 116 is provided with a slot 119 which receives a stud 120 carried by the lower arm 121 of a character sclector122, .a spring 123. affording the connection between the draw bar and the arm 121. The subtraction mechanism proper does not constitute a part of the present invention, the same being fully 'de-. scribed in Patent No. 1,430,088 dated September 26, 1922, but the present invention is directed rather to the train [of mechanisms employed for imparting the necessar movements' of the subtractin meeianisms through the escapement of ihe paper carriage. It is, therefore, deemed unnecessary to describe the subtraction mechanism in detail, it being understood, however, that it is set in motion either by the depression of the subtraction key lever or by a forward swinging thrust imparted to the link 95 by aforward imparte in the latter manner. will be offected through the medium of the lever 100,

To the lower forward cross bar 33 is secured a cam plate 124 illustrated in detail in Fig. 18, which cam plate is adjustable to any desired position along the cross bar 83. The latter is provided throughout its length witlra series of perforations 125 of size to have entered therethrough a pair of' headed studs 126 projecting upwardly from the'cam plate. These studs co-avct with a slide bar 127 which is guided between guide studs 128 two of which are shown in Fig. 18. The slide bar is provided with a plurality of key hole slots 129, the enlarged portions of which are of a size to permit the heads of 'the' studs 126 to be projected. therethrough when said enlargements are in register with the perforations 1'25. \Vhen, however, the slide bar is brought;to the left, as in Fig. 18,'the reduced, ortions of the key hole slots will engage the studs 126 behind the headsthere of, and hold the cam plate in fixed relation.
A spring 129 is provided to normally hold the slide plate in locking relation, and a push button 130 projects outwardly from the end of the slide plate through the adjacent end plate 31 of the carriage to permit pressure to be applied to move the slide plate to releasing position. The cam plate is provided inits rear edge with a depression 13 1, and the plate as a whole co-acts with a roller 132 mounted upon the upper end of the lever arm 133 which is pivoted at its elbow to a bracket 134' secured in fixed relation to the frame of the machine at a point immediately below the forward portion of the carriage. v
The lever arm 133 is provided at its rear lower end with a. foot 135 which is adapted to engage a stud 130 on a lower arm 137, which armiis connected by means of a spring the lever arm 133, the arrangement being such that, as the elevated portion of the cam plate 124 sweeps across the roller 132,
'thelatterwill be moved to the rear as in: Fig. 13 throwing the finger 139 forwardly i 138 with a lower finger 139 depending from elevated portion of which; when in lowered position as in Fig. 1, serves to disable the train of mechanism 146 which normally serve to lift the adding wheels into engagement with the racks on the return movement thereof. Since the particular construction of this train of mechanism forms no part of the present invention, it is notdeemed necessary to describe the same in detail.
The lower arm of the bell crank is normally held in raised position by means of .a spring 147 secured to a fixed bracket 148,
but this spring is of less tension than the spring 138, so that when the latter 1S drawn forwardly by the movement of the finger 139, the movement will serve to stretch the spring 147 without elongating the spring 138. The mechanism above described will operate in the manner stated whenever movement of the carriage serves to bring an the cam plate into register with the roller, unless said movements are blocked by mechanism controlled by the normalizing knob. hen the latter is moved to the position illustrated in Figs. 15 and 16, the depression of the normalizing lever 67, through the medium of a link 149, crank arm 150, and shaft 109, serves to impart a rearward rocking movement to ifurcated rock arm 152 which at its upper bifurcated end engages a stud 153 on a normalizi ng slide plate 154. The slide plate is provided with a pair of slots which receives headed studs-156 and 139 outwardly rotrudingirom and carried by the slide p ate 140, the arrangement being such that when the normalizing slide plate 154 is moved to the rear as in Fig. 15, the studs 156 and 139 will.occupy positions at the extreme forward ends of the slots 155, so that .further forward movement of the slide plate 140. is blocked. In these circumstances, a rearward rocking of the. arm 133 will simply have the efl'cct of imposing tension on the spring 138 without imparting movement to the lower arm 13?, so that the adding mechanism will not be disabled des ite the travel of the carriage to the left.
ring the tabulating operations, it is necessary to disable the mechanism normally employed [for rotating the platen in line spacing, and the following means are provided for this purpose: Themorn'ializing slide plate 154 is provided on its upper edge near its rear end with a cam elevation 157 I which co-acts with a roller 158 .on (a block arm 159 which is pivoted on the shaft 68, so that when the slide plate is drawn forwardly, as in Fig. 13, for tabulating, the block arm will be lifted and brought into the path of travel of a swin ing arm 160 provided with a stud 1-61 whic on the forward swing of the arm 160 will engage the rear end of the blopk arm and prevent continued movement 'th'ereof. This blocking of the arm 1 which is mounted on the shaft 162 serves to render ineffective the line spacing mecha nism which depends for its actuation upon a full movement of the arm 160. The line spacing mechanism is of; the character commonly employed for such purpose, and being well understood in the art, it is not deemed necessary to illustrate or describe the same in detail.
In operation, when it is desired to utilizethe tabulating device of the present invention, the normalizing knob will be thrown to the left, as in Figs. 13 and 14, with a view ofcontinuoiisly disabling the line spacing mechanisn'i, of disabling the adding mechanism at the intended column positions, and of permitting the escapement mechanism to act automatically with each movement of the operating handle. \Vith the knob in this position the subtraction mechanism is also tree to operate at the intended period in the travel of the carriage, provided the adjustment of the roller 82 is such as to co-act with the cam 80 on the carriage. \Vith the parts thus :i'djusted, each operation of the handle will effect a release of the escapemcnt allowing the carriage to move one step to the left without line spacing, so that the various items can be cross tabulated and either accumulated or omitted from the accumulation depending upon the adjustment of the cam, provided for dis abling'the operation of the adding wheels. Vhen it is desired to normalize the opcr-- ation of the machine, the carriage may be adjusted to the desired position by manually lifting the 'escapement dogs, and, allowing the carriage to move to the left, after which an adjustment of the normalizing knob to the position indicated in Fig. 16 will adjust the various mechanisms so as to permit pcrmancntly block the operation of the escapemcnt dogs. so that the carriage will maintain a definite cam position. The adjustment of the norumlizing knob to normalizing position as in Fig. 15, will pre vent the cam 124 from actuating the adding wheel disabling mechanisms, irrespective of the relation of the cam 124 to the roller 132, so that it is not necessary to remove or readjust the cam during such mn' 13-; at ion, although such removal or readjustment may be desirable if the relation of the cam to the roller ha pens to be such as to continuously retract the roller and impose a continuous tension on the spring 138. The arrangement of the automatic subtraction train issuch that it interferes in no way with the normal use of the subtraction key lever, so that the two mechanisms may be interchangeably employed, although where such subtraction is required in a given column in the tabulating operation, it is desirable to adjust the subtraction llO cam plate 80 to the desired column position and adjust the subtraction actuating roller 82 into co-operative relation with the cam, so that subtraction will automatically take place on each return of the carriage to the intended column.
The mechanisms above described are adapted to be applied to adding machines of standard type without substantial change or modification of the regular standard equipmentand serve to increase the capacity of the machine for special tabulating work of the character indicated.
I- claim:
1. In a mechanism of the class described, in combination with adding wheels and means for actuating the same, a transversely movable paper carriage, a cam on the paper carriage, a disabling train of mechanisu-i adapted, when actuated by the cam, to disable the operation of the adding wheels,
and normalizing devices adapted, when adjusted, to block the transmission of movement through the disabling train, and permit idle movement of a portion of said train only by the action of the cam, substantially as described.
2; In a mechanism of the class described. in combination with adding wheels and means for actuating the same, a. transversely movable paper carriage, a vcam carried by the carriage, yieldably connected pivotally mounted arms adapted to be rocked by the cam, connections between said, arms and the adding wheel actuating means for disabling the latter when the arms are rocked by the cam, and normalizing devices for blocking the movement of one of the yieldably connected arms whereby the other arm will move idly when actuated by the cam without imparting disabling movements to the adding wheel actuating devices, substantially as described.
3. Ian mechanism of the class described. in combination with adding wheels and a means for actuating the same, a transversely movable paper carriage, acam carried by the carriage, yieldably connected pivotally mounted arms adapted to be rocked by the cam, connections between said arms and the adding wheel actuating means for disabling the latter when the arms are rocked by the cam, normalizing devices for blocking the movement of one of the yieldably connected arms whereby the other arm will move idly when actuated by the cam without impartin disabling movements to the addin whee actuating devices; a platen carrie by' the carriage, line spacing devices for. rotating the platen, and connections be tween the normalizing devices and the line spacing devices for disabling the latter when said normalizing devices are adjusted to disable the adding wheels, substantially gas described.
4. In a mechanism of the class described,
the combination with adding wheels and means for actuating the same to add and to subtract, a transversely movable paper carriage, connections between the paper carriage and the means for effecting a subtracting movement of the adding wheels adapted to be actuated when the'carriage is in a predetermined position of adjustment, said means including a cam on the paper carriage, a rock shaft provided with an arm adapted to comet with said cam, and a swinging arm on the shaft for imparting movements to the subtraction actuating train, and a subtraction key connected with said subtraction train to provide by alost motion connection for direct manual actuation thereof, substantially *as described.
In a mechanism of the class described, the combination with adding wheels and means for actuating the same to add and to subtract, a transversely movable paper car-- riage, a cam carried thereby, an arm engaging said cam, a rock shaft on which said arm is adjustably mounted, and means actuated by the rocking of said shaft for effecting a subtracting adjustment of the adding wheels, the arm being-adjustable to a position of non-engagement with the cam; substantially as described.
6. In a mechanism of the class described, the combination with adding wheels and means for actuating the same to add and to subtract, a transversely movable paper carriage, a cam carried thereby, an arm engaging said cam, a rock shaft on which said arm is adjustably mounted, means actuated by the rocking of said shaft for effecting a subtracting adjustment of the adding wheels, the arm being adjustable to a position of non-engagement with the cam, and a subtraction key connected with the aforesaid the combination with adding wheels and means for actuating the same to add and to subtract, a transversely movable paper carriage, a cam carried thereby, a arm engaging said cam, a rock shaft on w ch said arm.

8. In a mechanism of the class described, thecombination of adding wheels and means for actuating the same, a transversely movable paper carriage provided with a rotatable platen, means for disabling the operation of the adding wheel actuating means, means for rotating the platen, means for disabling the operation of the platen rotating means, a slide plate ada ted to concurrently actuate both of said disa ling means, devices actuated by the arrival of the carriage at a predetermined point for moving said side plate to disabling position, and adjustable normalizing means adapted in one position to block the movements of the slide plate, substantially as described.
9. In a machine of the class described, thecombination of adding wheels and means for actuating the same. a transversely movable paper carriage provided with a rotatable platen, means for disabling the operation of the adding wheel actuating means. means for rotating the platen, means for disabling the operation of the platen rotating means, a slide plate adapted to concurrently actuate both of said disablin means, "de vices actuated by the arrival oi the carriage at a predetermined point for moving said slide plate to disabling position, and an adjustable normalizing slide plate lying adjacent to the first mentioned slide plate and adapted, when moved-t0 a predetermined position, to block the movements of the first mentioned slide plate, substantially as de-' scribed. 1

In a mechanism of the class described, the combination of adding wheels and means for actuating the same, a trarisversely movable paper carriage provided with a rotatable platen, means for disabling the operation of the adding wheel actuating means, means for rotating the platen, means for disabling the operation of the platen, rotating means, a slide plate ada ted to concurrently actuate both of said disabling means,

the combination of adding wheels and means for actuating the same, a transversely moving paper carriage provided with a rotatable platen, means for disabling the operation of the adding wheel actuating means, means :for rotating the platen, means for disabling the operation of the platen rotating means, a disabling slide plate interposed between the adding wheel disabling means and the platen rotating disabling means, said disabling slide plate being provided on its opposite edges with engaging surfaces, devices actuated by the arrival of the carriage ata predetermined point for moving said slide plate to bring said engaging surfaces to a position to simultaneously actuate both of said disabling devices, and normalizing mined position, to block the movements of the slide plate, substantially as described.
14. In a mechanism of the clam described,
the combination of adding wheels and means for actuating the same, a transversely movable paper carriage provided with a rotatable platen, means for disablingthe operation of the adding wheel actuating means, meansfor rotating the platen, means for disabling the operation of the platen rotating means, a disabling slide plate interposed between the adding wheel disghljng and theplaten rotating disabling means, said vices actuated by the arrival of the carriage at a predetermined point for moving said slide plate to bring said engaging surfaces to a position to simultaneously actuate both of said disabling devices, normalizing blocking means adapted, when moved to predetermined position, to block the movements of the slideplate, an escapement for the carriage, and a normalizing lever for disabling the operation of said escapement and for simultaneously moving the blocking devices-to a position to'prevent a disabling movement of the disabling slide plate, subtantially as described.
