CARVING-MACHINE :arraonrirnnr.
Application filed December 8, ias. Sta-ant. 679,508
To all whom it may) comm.-
Be it known that we, Tiinononn lVILnnnnona and ERNEST B. JOHNS, citizens of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carving-lllachine Attachments; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to improvements in carving machine attachments, and consists of a device provided with suitable means for attachment to carving machines; and the objects of the improvement are, first, to pro vide an attachment to machines of the char acter described, which will permit the cutting of any corrugated or otherwise irregular surface in conjunction with a master pattern by means of a cutter working from the side of the work to be cut, guided by a follower tracing the master pattern from the side on a line with the centre, the present method of securing this result being accomplished by means of the cutter and a follower tracing the master pattern from the top; and, second, to proviae an attachment assuring a quicker and more satisfactory method of operation, making an even cut of uniform width, and making possible a cutting operation free from shaving interference, not obtainable under the present method of operation.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary front view of a wood carving machine with our attachment mounted thereon; Fig. 2, a fragmentary top view of the same machine, Fig. 3, a front view of our attachment, partly broken away; and Fig. i, a side view of Fig. 3.
The cutter bar on the carving machine is represented by the reference character 5, the table frame by the reference character 6, the cutter spindles by the reference character 7, and the follower spindle by the reference character 8.
Suitably mounted in the table frame is the master pattern 9, and the material to be worked upon, 10. The cutters are held t the work by means of the pull ined through the cord 11, on one end of which is attached the weight 12.
The follower 8, following the irregular surface of the master pattern, guides the cutters against the material worked upon, the cutters thus re-producing the master pattern. o
By means of a bracket and pulley arrangement, the weight cord 11, is attached to the cutter bar and the operator by means of a suitable gripping member 13, may move the cutter bar as freely as desired. r
Mounted in the table frame are tracks or guides 14, upon which universal ball bearings 19, ride and hold the cutter bar in a vertical pie-determined position relative to the master pattern and the material worked upon but free to move relative to said master patterns horizontal axis, allowing said cutter bar, however to move horizontally away from or towards the master pattern and work; cutter bar 5 holding the cutter spindles 7 in a pre-determined position horizontally relative to the follower spindle.
The cutter bar is engaged in the channel 15, and is supported in the extended arms 15 of the guide bars 16. The cutterbar and attached cutters are adjusted in a vertical position by an adjusting screw 17, operated by means of a lever 18, said adjusting screw functioning within the channel 15 by engagement with a nut 15 within said channel and in accordance with its position within said nut raising or lowering the guide bars 16.
The universal bearings 19, are adjusted for wear and lost motion by suitable means 20 and 21, a locknut 22, providing adequate locking arrangement for the securing of same.
TVs are aware, that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the claim which is appended thereto. Hence, we do not limit our present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as described in the said specification, neither do we claim in whole or in part, any heretofore improvement on any carving machine, or the like,
but what we do claim as new and desire to the table frame, adjusting means for said ball bearings, ad ustmg screws for ad usting the cutter bar in a vertical direction, ad-
justing screw control levers; a pulley bracket, a cord running through said pulle bracket, means for attaching one: end thereof to the cutter bar, and a weight attached to theother end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. i
In testimony, that We claim the invention set forth above We have hereunto set our hands this 30th, day of November, 1923.
' THEODORE WILDBERGER.
