JOSEPH SETTERBERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOCK.
Application filed July 14,
for use on spare tires for motor vehicles.v
The main object of my invention is the provision of a lock which is to be attached to one end of a tire lock chain and adapted to receive and retain in position a locking bolt which is attached to the other end of the chain, thus securely locking the tire upon the rack for supporting the spare tire.
Another object of the present invention is the provision of a novel type of lock of this character wherein the bolt is provided with a plurality of annular shoulders and adapted to be inserted within a bore formed in the body of the lock, suitable tumblers within the body engaging the shoulders on the bolt to prevent removal of the bolt until the tumblers have been actuated to disengage the same from the shoulders.
With the above and other objects inview, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is the perspective view illustrating the application of my improved lock,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the body of the lock, illustrating the cooperating parts in elevation.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, illustrating the tumblers in longitudinal section,
Figure 4; is an enlarged perspective view of one of the tumblers, and
Figure 5 is a detailed sectional view on the line 55 of Figure 3.
In carrying out my invention, I prefer to use my improved lock with a locking chain 1 which, in the present instance, is attached to the pneumatic tire 2 of a motor vehicle, as clearly illustrated in Figure 1. The ends of the chain 1 are provided with eyes 3 and attached to one of the eyes at one end of the chain is a perforated ear 4 formed integral with the body 5 of my improved lock.
1924. Serial No. 725,948.
The body 5 of my improved lock is provided with two inwardly extending bores 6 and 7, said bores extending into the body at right angles to each other and their pathway meeting at preferably the central portion of the body, as is clearly illustrated in Figure 2. Arranged within the bore 7 are the tumblers 8 and 9, the tumbler 8 being arranged at the inner end of the bore 7 and normally retained in spaced relation with the inner end of the bore by means of a coil spring 10. -The tumbler 9 is positioned within the outer end of the bore 7 and retained in an operative position by means of the annular flange 11 having a groove 12 in which the bearing ring 13 is arranged, said flange and ring being embedded within the material of which the body 5 is formed, as shown in Figure 2, so as to prevent the tumbler 9 from being withdrawn from the bore. The tumbler 8 is provided with a slightly curvedend which faces the bore 6 and is further provided in this curved end with a plurality of ribs 1 1 and the projecting lips formed by the curved end of the tumbler are provided with recesses 15 into which the inner ends of the pins 16 engage for imparting movement to the tumbler 8 upon rotation of the tumbler 9, the other ends of the pins 16 hearing against the flange 17 formed on the innerend of the tumbler 9 and adapted to ride onto the shoulders 18 for moving the tumbler 8 against the tension of the spring 10. Suitable stops 19 are formed adjacent the shoulder 18 to limit the turning movement of the tumbler 9, the ends of the pins 16 striking the stops 19.
These pins described above are preferably arranged within longitudinal channels 20 formed in opposed relation in the wall of the bore 7 with their ends engaging the tumblers as set forth above. The tumbler 9 is provided with a key way 21 into which the proper key may be fitted for rotating the tumblers 9 as set forth above.
The eye 3 opposite the body 5 has attached thereto a connecting bolt 22, the outer end of which is provided with a plurality of annular flanges 23, said connecting bolt adapted to be inserted into the bore 6 and with pressure forced over the ribs 1 1 on the locking bolt 8, but as the ribs 23 on the bolt 22 are tapering and provided with horizontal faces, they will engage with the horizontal faces of the tapering ribs 1 1 and pre- Vent Withdrawalof thebolt 22 until the tumbler 9 has been actuated by ate-suitable key for engaging the ends of the pins 16 with the shoulders 18 and reciproeating'the bolt 8 against the tension of the spring 10, Which movement Will move the shoulders letout of the path of the shoulders 23 on the bolt 22 and permit the bolt 22 to be Withdrawn from the bore 6.
' From the abeve, it will be apparent that I have provided a simple, inexpensive, and durable lock of this character whereby "a l'etaini chain for motor vehicle tires may be quick-lyand readily plaeedin position an cl its ends connected to retain the same upon the rack. This lock will also prevent the removal of the tire from the wheel rack by unauthorized persons. It will also be apparent that the leek is extremely effective for ar-tic'les'of this type and canbe made in various shapes.
ll hile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it Will be understood that variousdhangesand alterations may be made 'WVll'lllOUll? departing from the spiritof-theinvention or the scope of "the appended claims.
"='l;aving{thus described my invention, What I claim is:
1. A look of the character described, including a body having a longitudinal and transverse boreext-ending into zthe body With their inner ends orossingeach other,-a connecting bolt having annular shoulders upon its onterend and'adaptedito be inserted *into the longitudinal bore and extended across thetransrerse bore, a spring" pressed locking tumbler having a ribbed face to cooperate with the shoulders-maths bolt for retaining the bolt in a locked position, and a key oper- :.ate.d tumbler Within the transverse bore cooperating with the first tumbler to release said bo'lt.
2. A lock of the character described, including a body having a longitudinal and transverse bore, a'locking bolt having a plu- "ra ii-ty tot-shoulders upon its outer end adaptedto be inserted into the longitudinal bore, a spring-pressed locking tumbler Within the inner I end ef the transverse bore hai 'ingnormal locking engagement with the shoulders on the bolt, -a key operated tumbler in the =outerend oft transverse bore, and means forming opei e connection between the said tumblers whereby rotation 'of the lrey operated tumb'ler will disengage "the looking tumbler from the bolt.
A lock-of the charactendescribed/including a body having a longitudinal and :transverse bore, a looking-bolt in the long'tudinefl bore, ;a spring pressed locking tumbler in the transverse -'loore having locking engagement with the said bo'lt, a key operated -tumb'ler intheouter end ofthe transverse bore and means forming operative eonnection between said tumblers wvhereby rotation :of the key operated tumbler will disengage the locking tumbler lirom the bolt.
In testimony whereof ,La'fiix :my signature.
