WATERPROOF PROTECTOR.
Application tiled March 7, 1923. serial No. 623,328.
To all whom z't may concem.'
Be it known that I, ELIGIOG. BARBERIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, Kings County, in the State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Waterproof Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to protectors f-oruse in emergencies such as rain and snow storms, for protecting the clothing and head dress of the wearer and is particularly directed to protectors of waterproof material in the form of a cape.
One of the objects of my invention isI to provide a protector of waterproof material such as waxed paper or the like which can be used effectively to protect the clothing and head dress of the wearer from rain or snow.
Another object of my invention is to rovide such a protector which is capable o being folded into a compact and convenient package so that it may be carried in the pocket or disposed of through means of s lot machines .or sold at news stands or like places where space is limited.
A further vobject of my invention is to provide such a protector which will be so inexpensive that it may be thrown away after being used, yet of such durable material that if desired it may be preserved and A still further object of my invention is the provision of a protector such as indicated with a hood folded in such a manner that it will effectively protect and cover the head dress even in the event that the head dress is of unusually large size and which may be accommodated to head dress of smaller sizes with equal effect.
Further objects of my invention will be manifest from the following description of the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. l1 is a view of a sheet of waterproof material, a form which may be employed in constructing the protector of my inven tion; and
Fig. 2 is a view of the protector or cape in use.
Referring to the drawings in detaih-l designates a sheet of waterproof material, such as waxed pa er for example, which is eut into an irre u ar form as shown in Fig. 1, the portion esignated 2 being substantially circular while the portion designated 3 is substantially rectangular.
'Ihe portion 2 is folded radially along the lines 4 as shown in Fig. 1 into folds or p eats 5 to form a hood 6 as is seen in Fig. 2. It must be understood that any number of these radial folds may be employed. It will be noted that these folds do .not extend to the center of the hood because such an arrangement would cause the hood to take a conical shape while it is preferable that the hood be frust-o-conical as shown in Fig. 2. These folds 5 are retained in the paper or other material by means of staples 7 or other suitable means.
The edge of the hood 6 is reinforced by a strip of reinforcing material 8 which may be of the same material as the protector or any other suitable material, such as cloth for example, which strip in addition to reinforcing the hood also helps to retain the hood in shape.
This strip 8 extends partially into the body member 9 which is formed from the portion 3 of the sheet 1, the body. portion also being provided at this point with another strip 10 of reinforcing inateiial overlapping the strip 8 for the purpose of reinforcing the .corner 11. The correspnoding corner on the other side of the cape is likewise reinforced. v
The strip of reinforcing material 10 on the body portion extends along the edge l2 of the body portion and is provided with .one or more openings 13 the opposite side of the body portion also being provided with corresponding openings, the two sets of openings receiving a staple or other suitable fastener. A plurality of these openings has been provided in each edge of the body portion so as to vary the size of the body ortion ofthe cape. The edge 14 is provided at 15 with overlapping strips of material 16 for reinforcing and is provided with an opening for fastening the cape at this point the opposite side being provided with a coi'- responding opening and reinforcing material. Any number of these openings may be provided. These openings are adapted to receive fasteners, such as staples for example but it is to be understood that any other form of fastening means as buttons for example may be employed.
The cape or protector is ca able of being folded into a very compact pac age and may be dispensed in slot machines 0r placed on sale at places Where s ace is limited such as news stands, or may carried ina pocket or hand bag.
It is to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the precise form as shown 4and described as the same is merely illustrative and may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of my in vention.
I claim:
1. A waterproof cape comprising a sheet of waterproof material, one portion of which is substantially rectangular' and the remain- 15 ing portion substantially circular, said ciris substantially rectangular and is provided 20 with reinforcements along the edges thereof to form the body portion of the cape, another portion being substantially circular and pleated radially to provide a frusta-- conical hood integral with the body por- 25 tion.
This specification' signed this 3 March, 1923.
ELIGIO lG. BABBERIS.
