PRODUCE BIN.
Application filed April 18, 1925. Serial No. 24,158.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE "W. BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Topeka, county of Shawnee, and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Produce Bins, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application.
My invention relates to bins, and has for its objects:
First, a sanitary feature.
Second, an exhibit feature of the contents when closed.
Third. automatic separation of the bin.
Fourth. simplicity of construction, and adapted for wall or intermediate installation in the store room.
Fifth, a bin accessible from either side.
These and other objects will be hereinafter more fully explained.
Referring to the drawings; Fig. 1, is an end View showing the action by dotted lines.
Fig. 2, is a detail sectional view through the cover.
. 3, is a side view of the bin.
4, is a top view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5. is an end view being modified for a side wall location.
Figs. (3 and 7 and S, are modifications which likewise. auton'xatically open.
It will be understood that the bins may be sectional or assembled, being a number in length andin height, supported by standards 1. said standard having a suitable foot 2, resting on the floor, and said standard having lateral bars 3 functioning as supporting means for the bin 4., the said bin being mounted on parallel bars 5, said bars being pivotally connected to the bin as at. A. and to the lateral bars as at B by which means the bin may swing to either side of the vertical axis of the standard 1, as shown by dotted lines C, or on the opposite side thereto, but not shown. 6 is a cover for said bin having solid ends and a curved ridge as at D. The said cover is pivotally mounted to the standards 1, as at r, where said bin is at its normal position as shown in Fig. 1. The said cover, being in vertical alignment, is adapted to register with the top of the bin and engaging over the edge thereof functions as a vermin tight enclosure.
Centrally positioned on each end is a laterally extending bar 8, having a slot 9 longitudinally disposed therein, the said slot adapted to engage with a pin 10, said pin being attached to the ends of the bin; and when the bin is rocked to either side the said bar will function as tilting meansfor the cover carrying it to the position as shown by dotted lines E.
It will now be clearly seen how the separation of the cover and bin is affected automatically.
The said cover having solid ends as-herctofore described and preferably being made of sheet metal, has its edges turned as at F, functioning as a bed for the glass 11.. 12 is an angle shaped member rigidly attached to the ends and functioning as a stop to hold said glass in position. a
The bin 4 is also constructed of sheet metal and is adapted to receive vegetable; or other merchandise and it will also be understood that containers such as bones or baskets containing the merchandise may be placed in the bins, all being visible through the glass when the bin is normally closed.
To remove any of the merchandiie contained therein as above described, the merchant will take hold of the handle 1?, drawing the bin oi'itwardi, which by reason of the parallel bars will rock downward in level alignment and at the same time the cover will be rocked as heretofore describet sop arating one side from the bin which is accessible means to the contents therein.
When the bin thrown backward rocling the cover thereby, they are normally positioned and closed automatically.
I do not confine my invention to the storage of produce only as it may be used for other commodities; neither do I restrict the material for its construction to sheet metal, and the shape of the bins and cover may be varied.
Such modifications may be employed as lie within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a produce bin,.supporting standards having laterally disposed bars functioning as bearings, bars pivotally mounted at the ends of the first of said bars, the second of said bars being pivotally connected to the ends of a bin so that said bin will rock, engaging pins centrally positioned near the top edge of the ends of said bin a cover pivotally mounted between said standards in vertical alignment With the normal position of said bin, slotted laterally extending bars on the ends of said cover, said slot engaging said pins on the ends Oil said bin so that the rocking of said bin will rock said cover simultaneously as shown and described.
