Patented Mar. 2, 1926.
UNITED sTATEs FREDERICK A. VI-IITE, OF PLEASANTVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Application filed August 25, 1924.. Serial No. 734,099.
To all 107mm t may concern:
Be it known that l, Funnniuck A. lVHrrn,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Pleasantville, in the county of Venango and lState of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches,` of which the following is a specification.
VThis invention has reference to tools for handling drill bits or other tools used in drilling or operating artesian wells and has for its primary object to provide a swivel wrench with roller bearings i between the head and jaw thereof to eliminateV friction as well as to provide the open end of the yhead with a removable gate in the nature of a segment forming the same with a safetyI device for preventing the bits falling out of the wrench.
A further object is to simplify and improve the existing` art by producing a wrench of this class characteristic of `simplicity in construction, cheapness in manufacture and ethciency in operation.`
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawings which accompany and which form part of this application. Y
In the drawings Figure lis a top plan view of the wrench.
Figure Q. is a sectional view approximately on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure `3 lis a bottom plan viewV of the wrench. y
Figure 4L is a horizontal sectionalview approximately on the line 1 et ofFigure 2.
Figure 5 is a view of the head with the j aw and the ring carried thereby removed.
Figure Iis a perspective view of the seg-- mental bridge or gate.
The frame of the improvement includes a lever l having one end provided with a yoke 2. The yoke, preferably at its juncture with the lever l has an eye e whereby the frame may bc supported, if desired, by a crane 01 derrick carrying the usual hooked chain to engage in the eye 8.
The arms of theyoke 2 are provided with bearing e es l that receive therethrou h removable trunnions 5 secured in the sides of thehead 6. The head 1s m the nature of a riep having @riepen side.
A flanged ring member T is received in the head. A jaw plate 9 is bolted or otherwise removably secured on the ring `member 7, the said plate having a substantially rectangular slot or opening l() therethrough in a line with the opening in the head and in a line with the opening inone side ofthe ring 7, when these elements are disposed in the position illustrated in Figure '1 of the drawings. The ring 7 thus forms the base or body of the jaw plate, and the said plate 9 being removably secured to lits base permits of the arrangement of other plates thereon having dilferent sized openings 10 to engage with different sized bits or other tools. Also between the plate 9 and the head G there are preferably arranged anti frictional roller bearings l1, carried by the plate 9.
The ends of the body have at their inner wedge-shaped notches 12. The wedge-shaped notches are designed to re# ceive therein the wedge-shaped ends of a segmental bridge yor gate member 14. The bridge is held in position by frictional engagement of the reduced wedge-shaped ends l5 thereof with the walls of the wedgeshaped notches l2 of the ring members 7. The bridge segment 14 is, however, provided with a handle 1G whereby the same may be arranged on or removed from the head. The bridge piece 111-' forms an efficient means for preventing tools dropping through the opening in the tool vwhen thel wrench is in operation. The ring base proper for the V)aw is provided on its underface with the usual outwardly curved handles 17' for the well-known purpose.
lt is thought that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings will fully set forth the construction and advantages ofthe improvement to those skilled in the art to which it relates.
rlhe rollers ll spaceV the head 6 from the plate 9 and thereby permits a free passage of air between the head' and plate, thereby preventing rust between these parts and also permitting the ready disassociation of the said parts.
Having described the invention, I claim r- In a wrench, the combination of aL yoke frame, a ring head swiveled thereon having an opening in one side thereot and having its ioo ends provided with wedge noLelles, a flanged ring member on the lower` face of the head and in vContact with the inner periphery thereof, said ring member hzwngen opening through one side thereof', a jaw plate having' an opening therethrough removablyy secured to the ring member, rollerbearings between the jaw plate, the ring member and 1the head, :L segmental budge plate hevgng wedge-shaped ends recewed m the wedge shaped notches of the head, and a handle on the brdofe plate.
In teetlmony whereof I alx my slgnatm'e.
FREDERICK A. XVHTFJ.
