UNITED STATES MORRIS GOLOMB, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
srnriznve-sae PLATFORM.
Application filed November 11, 1924. Serial No. 749,274.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Mourns Genome, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Striking- Bag Platforms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in platforms for striking bags, wherein the bag, usually an air-filled bladder protected by an outer covering, is suspended from. the platform and driven against the same by the blows of the user, to train the eye and judgment and striking muscles.
Platforms of this type are usually flat and solid, and, when flat, open to the objection that the line of force of the bag, when driven against the platform, is necessarily against a surface at an angle other than a right angle to such force, as the bag is swinging in the arc of a circle. This dissipates some of the force of the bag, and the rebound is necessarily of materially less force than the impact, hence the bag movement is comparatively slow.
In the improved construction, however, the platform is dish or saucer shaped, that is, concaved, with the margin which ordinarily receives the bag impact substantially at right angles to the line of force of the swinging bag. Hence the rebound force is more nearly that of thedriving force, and the bag is fast, which is to be highly de sired.
Furthermore, the improved platform is cut out to leave open spaces to admit proper light directly to the bag, during movement, and thus permitting training in this particular under normal light conditions.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 2-- Fig. l is a perspective view of the improved platform, showing a bag connected therewith, and the platform supported from a fixture.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the platform, the bag being shown in broken elevation.
The improved platform comprises a circular disk like member 1, of metal, wood,
swivel or universal support 7 for the usual strikingbag 8, and this bag is hung so as to contact with the marginal flange 3 when swinging. As such marginal flange is rounded downwardly and outwardly from the center section 4, incident to the concaved formation of the platform, it follows that the line of driving force of the bag when swinging is directed against a surface substantially at right angles to such line of force, hence the rebound force is materially greater than would be the case if the platform was flat.
Thus the bag is very much faster with the improved platform than with the usual platform, a result highly desired in training devices of this type.
The platform is to be supported in any desired manner, as for example, through studs 9 rising from the upper sides, and removably engaging arms or braces 10, two of which in the instance shown extend in substantially parallel relation to a bracket plate 11, adapted to be secured to a suitable fixture, the third brace 10 being inclined and connected to an independent bracket plate 1.2.
The openings in the platform are in sufficient area to freely admit the necessary light from above the platform to avoid shadows on the bag, and render the same equally lighted on all sides.
I claim:
l. A striking bag platform, comprising a structurally integral casting having a sub stantially fiat central. portion, and an edge curving downwardly and outwardly there from with a rounded margin.
2. A striking bag platform comprising a structurally integral. casting having a substantially flat central portion, and an edge ing downwardly and outwardly therefrom curving downwardly and outwardly therewith a rounded margin, the fiat portion befrom With a rounded margin, the flat poring formed with a series of openings, and 10 tion being formed With a series of openings. means at the center of the flat portion for 3. A striking bag platform comprising a supporting the striking bag. structurally integral casting having a sub- In testimony whereof I affix my signature. stantially flat central portion, an edge eurv- MORRIS GOLOMB.
