CLINTON W. WILLIAMS, NOIV BY JUDICIAL CHANGE OF NAME JOSEPH CLINTON WILLIAMS, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
WINDOW BED.
Application filed December 22, 11922. Serial No. 608,489.
Be it known that I, CLINTON 7. WIL- LIAMS, now by judicial change of name J os- EPH CLINTON VVrLLrAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vindow' Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bed and furniture forming apparatus, and has for its object kto provide a` bed structure that is adapted to be readily folded outwardly and inwardly through an ordinary size window so that the bed can bearranged for sleeping use in the open, outside of' the wall in which the window is provided.
Another object of the invention is to provide a `i'o'ldable bed structure which can be extended into serviceable position for `adults when arranged exterior to an ordinary size window. Another `object is to provide a fol'dable bed structure which can be compact/ly folded within a room and disposed either Contiguous toa windowor otherwise, as for instance when it is desired to use the apparatus as a settee or seat. Also it is an object to provide a' foldable bed apparatus which can be arranged when within a room as a bed or cot. v
Other objects and advantages will be l-nad'e manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective showing the 'bed-- frame disposed and unfolded beyond a house, or other building, window.

Fig. 15 isa perspective of the erected end and side guards of themodiiied Jform.
Fig. 16 is an end elevation of the modified form of the bed when erected as a cot supported on the corner legs.
Fig. 17 is a perspective showing the foldable bed window in combination with an awning.
The broad object of my invention is to provide. a oldalcle` bed-frame which may be readily projectedv out through a window when the sections of the frame are folded up and then extended when the bedfframe has been arranged in horizontal position outside of the window, means being provided for'foldably supporting the frame to facilitate the inward and outward movement thereof through the window opening.
The apparatus is shown as arranged in 'combination with a wail T having a window opening O which, for example, may be of ordinary dwelling housev dimensiens and may, for instance, have a width of two or three feet or three feet six inches, or four feet width, or any other width dimension, these being mentioned as for average sizes of dwelling windows.
The bed, in its illustrated form, consists of a central section 2 of a length not greater than the width of the window opening C! so that the iframe 2 can be passed in and out of the window. To obtain a full length bed, there is connected to the frame 2, in any suitable manner, any suitable section or sections adapted to be extended in alinement with the length of the section 2 to provide a full length bed-frame. rFlierefore, the frame 2 is here shown as having outwardly foldable end sections 3 which are pivot-ally connected at 4 to the corners of the frame 2. The end sections 3 are adapted to be folded inwardly upon the frame 2 as is shown in Fig. 11 so that the contracted frame can be shifted in and out of the window.
To facilitate the movement of the bedframe and further for the purpose of acting as a substantial support for the same` the inner rail of the bed-frame 2 is shown as pivotally connected at 5 to the contiguous ends of substantial links C, a pair of which are here shown; each link being disposed contiguous to the frame work F of the window. rlhe bed-frame may have a width greater than the opening formed between the sill S of the window opening and the bottom rail R of the window sash, Fig. 12, and to facilitate the movement of the bedframe through the window opening, the links 6 are shown as pivotally connected at 7 to the upper ends of swinging bracket links 8, which are shown as detachably connected to the wall W inside of the window.
It may be desirable to provide for the entire detachment of the foldable bed-frame from the wall structure, and therefore the links 8 are shown as detachably fastened by pivot pins or keys 9 passing, for instance, through an eye device 10 in the form of a screw eye having a screw shank 11 which can be driven into the wall.
Then the bed-frame 2 is positioned within the window, as shown in Fig. 12, it may be utilized as a seat or settee and it is then supported upon suitable legs 13 which may have casters 14 enabling the device to be rolled about the floor when it is disconnected from the screw eyes 10 by the removal of the locking pins 9. The .legs 13 may form a part of a frame 15 which is adapted to be entirely detached from. it end frame 3, which latter is adapted: to be folded in under the frame 2. The leg frame 15 may be provided with hooks er other fastening means 16 to engage receivers or slots 17 provided therefor in the end frame 3, it being understood that there is a foot frame for each end frame. Further fastening means may be employed to secure the foot frame 15 in its under-folded position of Figs. 12 and 18, and such fastening means may consist of a .simple snap hook or lat-ch 18 which is here shown as being secured to a transverse end member' of the frame 2. y,
Vhen it is desired to project the bedframe out through the window opening 0,
the leg frame 15, with the legs, are detached from the end sections 3 and then the main frame 2 is lifted to the dotted line position ZJ, Fig. 11, and passed out through the win dow; the frame 2 being tilted at a suitable angle so that its upper side will clear the bottom rail R of the window sash. The links 6 are then swung down onto the sill S upon which preferably are placed protecting rails 2O on which the links 6 may slide and rest. When the links are resting on the rails 2O then the frame 2 can be swung to the position a and then continued down to the horizontal position. To provide a desired degree of rigidity and safety after the frame 2 has been turned to its outer horizontal position, it can be fastened up by braces 21.
Vhen the bed-frame 2 has been extended outwardly, the end frames 3 can their be unfolded into alinement with each other and with the bed-frame 2 to form a full length bed apparatus as shown in Fig. 10. Any suitable mattress supporting means as a spring or wire, or other device 22, may be provided upon the sections 2 and 3.
The swinging movement of the bed-frame 2 about its pivots 6 may be facilitated by forming the pivots as of a continuous rod 5l and supporting on these rods helical springs 23, the ends of each of which are so disposed and associated with the contiguous side member of the bed-frame 2 as to tend to swing the bed-frame inwardly; the opposite ends of the springs 23 being shown as associated with the links 6. This provision will, therefore, aid in lifting the frame 2 from the outer extended position to an upright position in the window opening after which the bed-frame can be bodily shifted inwardly by inward movement of the links 6.
The outer side of the extended bed is Vadapted to be guarded by detachable or foldable outside walls or panels 25, Fig. 9, which may consist of frame sections having lugs or any suitable fastening devices 26 to engage complementary devices or keepers 2T, the latter being provided in the outside rail sections of the bed-frame. Preferably the guard panels 25 are of a length to enable them to be folded or nested compactly in the main frame 2 of the bed. rEhe erected guard panels may be connected at their upper inenting corners as by a fastening latch End guards 30 are provided, and as shown in Fig. 1, each consists of a guard frame which may be rigidly connected to a leg frame 15. Therefore, the leg frames when disconnected from the leg supporting position in Fig. 13 can be applied to the extended ends 3, Fig. 1, so that the guards will eX- tend up as is shown in Fig. 4t, in which position they may be latched by central latches 31 provided on the end frames 3. The leg frames may have hooks 32 adjacent to the casters 14 of the legs, and these hooks are adapted to enter slots 33 provided therefor in the end frames. It is understood that. the method of constructing and vmounting the end guards is here shown in one form only as it is obvious that various other end guard and side guard constructions may be .employed.
A modified form of the end and side guards and of the supporting legs is shown in Figs. 14 to 16 inclusive wherein the end guards 30 are hingedly connected at 30" along their lower edges to the transverse end bars of the frame and may be swung from an inwardly folded position, Fig. 14, to a perpendicular position, Fig. 15.
A modied form of end legs is shown as comprising substantially triangular or otherwise shaped frames 40 hingedly pivoted at 41 Vto the side members of the unfoldable end frame sections so that the leg frames Lt() can be folded inwardly over the inturned end guards 40 or may be extended to perpendicular position as shown in Figs. and 16.
The side `guard of the modified form consists of a central section hingedly connected at 25b so that the side wall on the bed frame 2 is adapted to be swung from a folded to an upstanding position, Fig. 15. The ends of the guard 25a are provided with foldable wings 25C shown as hingedly connected at 25d to the central guard 25a andthey may therefore be folded to an outermost position in alignment with the central section 25 as is shown in Fig. 15.
rlhe erected guard elements may be suitably secured in upright position as by simple and appropriatey latches or fasteners 25C. It will be seen, therefore, that the modified form of device shown in Figs. 14 to 16 provides guard elements which are permanently but foldably connected to the bed frame. lVhen the bed is to be extended in cot-forming position and supported on a floor, the leg frames are folded down, as is shown in Fig. 16, and the casters 14 thereof will bear upon the Hoor or other supporting plane.
A feature of my invention is that to secure the maximum degree of safety in the supporting of the foldable bed in the position exterior to the window, means for increasing the stability and support is shown as comprising, in Fig. 1T, the combination of the bed with an awning A of any approved and suitable construction. The awning frame is shown as connected to the bedframe by means of links or suspending devices 50, and if desired the suspending devices may be extended as in the form of chains or other means 51 attached to the primary supports of the awning.
Further embodiments, modifications and changes may be. resorted to within the spirit of the invention as here claimed.
that is claimed is:
l. A wall-window bed having a main section of less length than a given window so as` to pass fully therethrough in or out, means `extensible to form a full length bed outside the wall, a-nd a foldable supporting `mea-ns attachable to the .inner face ofthe and end sections- '.vhen they are extended,
and means attachable to the inner' sine of a wall and to which the bed structure is hingedly connected so that it may be supported wholly outside of the window.

4t. A bed-frame of less length than the width of a given window in a wall so as to be wholly folded outwardly and inwardly therethrough, foldalile sections connected to the bed-frame and adapted to be extended lo form a full length bed, and means for detachably and foldably connecting the bedframe to the inner face of the wall, the bed having supporting means whereby it can be converted into a bed within the room of which the wall may form a part.
A bed structure consisting of a main frame of a width somewhat less than the length of a given window opening in a wall.y means for connecting the bed-frame to the wall contiguous to the window in such position that the bed-frame can be wholly passed out and in through the window opening, and foldable sections connected to the bed-frame so that the latter can be formed into a full length bed either inside or outside the wall'.
6. A bed structure including links attach able to a primary supporting part, a main bed frame, folding connections between said bed frame and said links whereby, when the structure is secured as to a wall adjacent a window, the bed frame can be bodily moved from an inside position to a position entirely outside of the window, and spring means for facilitating the unfolding` of the bed frame when it has been positioned outside of the window.
