Application filed June 1,
7'0 (1H in/min, it may hormonal I vlle ityknown that LAD/win (i. lmuiminn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Los Augeles, county of Los Angeles, State s ol (lali f-ornia, haveinvented newand useful; improvements in 'lhrottling Devices, 0t which the following is a specification.-
This invention relates to throttling devices particularly adapted to be employed in pipe lines from oil wells.
it is the object of the invention to provide a device of this character whereby the flow may be readily regulated by adjusting the opening in the device through which the 011 1. passes. v
it is a iurther object of the invention to provide a regulating means of this character, comprising a seat and a head adjustable relative thereto, mounted ina casing, and
2e arrai'iged whereby said seat and head may he removed and re )laced Without disconnecting the pipe line trom said casing. V
it is a still'iiurther object of the inven tion to provide indicating means associated 2a with the adjustable head, so that tliesize of the opening for the passage of the flow may he conveniently ascertained, and set as is found desirable, The invention further provides. means for so guiding the movement of the adjustalole head so, as toproperlyaline the same With its cooperating seat, the head being proton ably an elongated conical member, and the eooperatine' seat, an elongated bushing hav s ing a tapering bore.
Further ob "ects or the invention will he readily understood from the following do= seriptionoi the accompanying drawings, in which: Q i &0 Fig. i is a side elevation partly in axial section, r i
Figs. 2, 3., and t are detail sections on the lines 22, 3-3, and H oflFig. it. The casing of the device is shown at it, a is usual T construction having the flanged in let 2, and the flanged outlet 3 angulariy disposedwith relation to the inlet. Atlanged opening 4: is at the rear of the casing in alinen'ient with outlet 3,
The seat of the device is an elongated hush= ing 5 having a tapering bore 6, said seat being detaehably .mounted in the casing at the outlet, and arranged for removal and replacement through opening 4. As an instance of this arrangement, a disc 192 2. Serial No. 565,147.
'7 is adapted to be received against the flange oi outlet 3 and su iportml over said outlet 3, has a detachable ilangell, and in assembling the parts, disc 7 is fixed against the flanged outlet, by flange or annulus 11 received l'WiIlllS'ii the same, usual bolts 12 ex-- tending tn-oufh the flange, of the outlet. disc- '7,- and i ange 11, to
means. Y a i lPipe section 13 maybe connected to inlet 2, by a usual. flange 14; on said pipe section received against the flange of the inlet, with bolts 15 received through the flanges to term retaining means.
form retaining To'i-ItIet, said disc having a threaded bore 8 received in threaded A guide adapted to receive the adjustable head cooperating with bushing 5 extends into the casing and is preferably mounted at opening 4. The guide is shown as a tuloular ,mein'her 16, having a flange 17 adjacent its outer end and adapted to be received against the flange 0i. openlng 4, for positionin the guide in'the casing in spaced relation rem, and in aaial alinement with bushing 5.
A yoke 18 extends'rearwardly from (porn ing 1-, and, has a flanged end l fireceived against flange 1'7, with colts 20 extending through flanges i9 and 17, and the ilange of opening 4, for retaining the guide and the yoke in osition.
The yoke 'ias a'threaded loore'21 in aline meat with opening 4-,} and a, screw and 22 is threaded through tie same, with operating means shown as a hand Wheel 23 upon the enter end oi said screw rod,
The screw rod extends into the. tuloniar ouide, preferably with a packing gland 24; loetvveen the rod and guide, and the inner ,end oi the rod is received in a recess 25 provided in the end 28 of an elongated conical headfZ'l which is mountedin the guide.
' rod 22.
mounted on one arm of yoke 18, and a cooperating pointer 31 arranged on screw lhe mounting of the pointer preferably includes a shoulder 32 on the screw rod, with a bearing head 33 on the pointer received on the rod against said shoulder. A collar 34 is fixed on the screw rod so as to hold the bearing head against shoulder 32 Eli graduated scale.
It will be noted that the construction as thus described provides for adjustment of the passage for the flow through bushing 5, by axial movement of the tapering head in a. the tapered bore of the bushing, and that means are provided for indicating the adjusted position of the'head and the resulting regulation of the flow opening.
It will further be observed that the invention provides for removal and replace- "nnut oi the wearing parts, through the opening 4 at the rear of the casing, without necessitating the disconnection of the sections of the pipe line from casing 1..-
VVhile I have illustrated and described, what I now believe'to bethe preferred practical embodiment of the device, itwi'll be apparent that various changes may be made in the construction, combination, and arangement of parts, Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the character described, a casing having an opening and a valve seat surrounding said opening, a head cooperating with said seat adapted to close said opening, a threaded operating member adapted for longitudinal adjustment ot said head relative to said seat, a graduated scale, said operating member having a shoulder thereon, a pointer cooperating with said scale and having a bearing receivedon said operating member against said shoulder, and a collar fixed on said operating member against said bearing.
2. In a device of the character de cribed, a casing having an outlet, a member having a bore provided With attaching means, an annulus received against said member and fixed to said casing for positioning said member against said casing and over said outlet, and a bushing in said casingdetachably engaged by sa'd attaching means,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
DAVID G. LORRAINE.
