Referring now more particularly to the mechanism for handling the roll of printing paper which is to be supplied to the press, a pair of bearings 10 of the press frame. The trackways 11 are approximately horizontal, but preferably are very slightly inclined inwardly or toward the printing mechanism proper soas to facilitate the rolling or sliding of the new roll of printing paper into position in the bearingslO. In the illustrated embodiment, a pair of guideways 13 .and 14 are provided on the ends of the press frame, and these are preferably vertically or approximately vertically arranged. These guideways are preferably T shaped, as best shownin Fig. 6. Mounted to slide or travel along the guideways, respectively, are saddles 15 and 16, which engage-beneath the ends of the mandrel. 17. The saddles are formed with a guide member 20, which is provided with a face21 engaging with the face of the guideway 13, and'is alsoprovided with side portions 22 and 23 extending along the sides of the guide 13, and with inner end portions 24 and 25 which extend back of the guide 13. Thus the saddles embrace their respective guides, but are sli'dable therealong.

Means are provided for raising and lowering the saddles and for holding them in any desired position along their path of travel. As embodied, two bars 30 and 31extend downwardly, respectively, from the saddles 15 and 16, and may conveniently extend into depressions in the floor. On its inner edge the bar 30 is provided with a straight gear 32, and bar 31 is provided with a like gear 33. Meshing with the gear 32 is a gear wheel 36, and meshing with the gear 33 is a gear wheel 37, both gear wheels being fixed on a shaft 38, which shaft is journaled at 39 and 40 in the machine frame.
The embodied form of means for rotating the shaft 38 comprises a ratchet wheel 44 fixed on the shaft 38, a lever 45 loosely pivoted on the shaft, and a pawl 46, which is pivoted on lever 45 and engages with the teeth of the ratchet 44.
Suitable detent means are provided for the ratchet wheel 44, and preferably in connection therewith a release and a braking mechanism, whereby the saddles may be lowered under control either. with or without In the parent case this mechanism is shown applied to the same construction of pawl and ratchet mechanism for the offset roll, andin the same relation. As embodied, in Fig; 5, a detent 4-7 is pivoted at 48 on the machine frame, and is provided with a tail 49 which may be actuated by the foot of the workman. Extending from the tail 49 is an arm 50, provided with a brake shoe 51 adapted to engage with a brake pulley or roll 52, fixed on shaft 38. A spring 53 yieldably holds the detent to the ratchet and the brake off from the brake pulley.
The manner of operation of the mechanism will be clear in the main from the foregoing. In Fig. 2 of the drawings, the web from paper roll x is shown running into the press and a new roll of paper 00' is shown resting upon the floor, and with the saddles 26 in position therebeneath, ready to lift the roll by its mandrel 17. In Fig. 4, the now almost depleted roll 03 has been moved from the bearings 10 to the bearings 12 to make room for the new roll :12, and the roll w has been raised, through the actuation of hand lever 4-5, and the upper surface of the saddles 26 are shown just flush with the corresponding trackways 11, whereby themandrel 17 of the roll x will be rolled or slid with very little effort onto and along the trackways 11. 1

In combination in a printing press, a trackway, substantially horizontally disposed, but with a slight slope toward the pressya p'air of bearings ifor a paper roll mandrel at the lower end of-said traclrway, a pair of saddles the tops of which slope toward the :press, :gnideways on the press with Whichthe saddles slidably engage, and means fior simultaneously operating the saddles wherebyaroll of paper is lifted to the traclzway and rolls oltthe saddles and along the-trackway to the said bearings.

In combination in a printing press a pair 'of trackways tor the ends ofa paper roll mandrel, a pair oli gnideways extending upwardly to the trackways, a pair of roll lifting devices moving along the guideways, and common actuating means connected to both lifting devices and extending across the press below the trackways.

In combination in a printing press a pair of trackways for the ends of a paper roll mandrel, a pair of guideways extending upwardly to the trackways, a pair of roll lifting devices moving along the guideways, and common actuating means connected to both lifting devices and extending across the press below the trackways, the guideways extending downwardly so that the mandrel of a paper roll resting on the floor may pass above the lifting devices.
12. In combination in a printing press a pair of trackways for the ends of a paper roll mandrel, a pair of guideways extending upwardly to the trackways, a pair of roll lifting devices moving along the guideways, and including geartoothed members, and common actuating means having geartoothed members meshing with the firstmentioned gear-toothed members connected to both lifting devices and extending across the press below the trackways.
13. In combination in a printing press a pair of trackways for the ends of a paper roll mandrel, a pair of guideways extending to, and terminating upwardly at, the trackways, a pair of roll lifting devices, extending from the guideways in the opposite direction from the trackways, moving along the guideways, and including gear-toothed members, and common actuating means for said roll lifting devices having gear-toothed members meshing with the first-mentioned gear-toothed members, connected to both lifting devices and extending across the press below the trackways, the guideways extending downwardly so that the mandrel of a paper roll resting on the floor may pass above the lifting devices.
14. In combination in a printing press a pair of bearings for rotatively supporting the ends of a paper roll mandrel, means for conveying a paper roll thereto including guideways, a pair of mandrel-engaging lifting saddles traveling on the guideways, gear racks extendingfrom the saddles, gear pinions meshing with the racks, a shaft on which the pinions are fixed and extending across the press, and means whereby the shaft may be rotated.
15. In combination in a printing press a pair of bearings for rotatively supporting the ends of a paper roll mandrel, means for conveying a paper roll thereto including guideways, a pair of mandrel-engaging lifting saddles traveling on the guideways, gear racks extending from the saddles, gear pinions meshing with the racks, a shaft on which the pinions are fixed and extending across the press, and means whereby the shaft may be rotated, the guideways extending downwardly so that the mandrel of a paper roll resting on the floor may pass above the lifting devices.
16. In combination in a printing press a pair of bearings for rotatively supporting and extending across the press, the shaft and. pinion being below the level of the bearings, and means whereby the shaft may be rotated.
17. In combination in a printing press a pair of bearings for rotatively supporting the ends of a paper roll mandrel, means for conveying a paper roll thereto including guideways, a pair of mandrel-engaging lifting saddles traveling on the guideways, and extending from the guideways on the opposide from the bearings, gear racks extending fromthe saddles, gear pinions meshing with the racks, a shaft on which the pinions are fixed and extending across the press, and, means whereby the shaft may be rotated.
18. In combination in a printing press a pair of bearings for rotatively supporting the ends of a paper roll mandrel, means for conveying a paper roll thereto including guideways terminating at substantially the level of said bearings, a pair of mandrelengaging lifting saddles traveling on the guideways, and extending from the guideways on the opposite side from the bearings, gear racks extending from the saddles, gear pinions meshing with the racks, a shaft on which the pinions are fixed and extending across the press, the shaft and pinions being below the level of the bearings, and means whereby the shaft may be rotated.
19. In combination in a printing press a substantially horizontally disposed trackway, upwardly extending guideways carried on the end of the press frame and cooperating therewith, saddles slidable on the guideways, and means located entirely below the level of the trackway for raising the saddles simultaneously for lifting a paper roll onto the trackway.
20. In combination in a printing press a substantially horizontal trackway, substantially vertical guideways cooperating therewith, saddles slidable on the guideways, a horizontally extending shaft, means operatively connecting the shaft and saddles whereby the saddles are simultaneously raised upon rotation of the shaft, and manually operated means for rotating the shaft.
21. In combination with a printing press,
vertical guides on the ends of the side frame of the press, saddles slidable on said guides, a horizontally extending shaft adjacent the saddles, means operatively connecting the shaft and the saddles, and means for rotating the shaft.
22. In combination With a printing press, vertical guides on the ends of the side frame of the press, saddles slidable on said guides, a horizontally extending shaft adjacent the 10 saddles, pinions carried by the shaft, racks carried by the saddles, meshing with the pinions, and means for rotating the shaft.
