Description
"D. D@ MACKAY.
Egg-Beaters.
Patented Des. 8,1874.
wh/mag UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DONALD D. MAOKAY, OF WHITESTONE, YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-BEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 157,456, dated December 8, 1874; application filed July 24,1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, DONALD D. MAcKAY, of Whitestone,-in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Egg-Beaters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My present invention relates to that class of egg-beaters which employ two or more stirrers or beaters, arranged. to revolve in different circles, and in different directions, relatively to each other; and it consists in the combination of one or more main beaters, one or more auxiliary beaters, and a stationary encompassing-frame, whereby I producea very efficient implement, by which the eggs or other substances to be mixed are successively and repeatedly dashed by the several beaters against the stationary frame, and thus Amore efi'ectually beaten or mixed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of an egg-beater containing my present improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same and Fig. 3 is a trailsverse section of the same, taken on the plane ofthe line x a, Fig. 2.
The mechanism which I have shown for rotating the main or central beater is substantially the same as that shown and described in United States Letters Patent. No. 85,460,
granted to me December 29, 1868, which I will very brieiiy describe.
A designates a tubular hand-piece, having caps a b fitted on its ends. Within this hand-piece there is a stationary nut, C, and above this nut a spiral spring, E, bearing at the upper end against the cap a, and at the lower end againsta movable disk, D. B is a rotary spindle, provided With a spiral rib or thread, c. This spindle passes into the handpiece A, and its spiral rib or thread c works through the stationary nut O, and abuts against the movable disk D. v
By depressing the hand-piece the nut O is caused to travel along the spiral c, and rotate the spindle in one direction, and on relieving the handle from pressure the spring E causes the parts to resume their original position,
and rotate the spindle in the reverse direction. This mechanism I do not claim in the present application. Y
The spindle B is provided at its lower end with a beater, (see Fig. 1,) consisting, in the present instance, of a Wire frame, Gr H, of greater Width at the lower end than at its upper end, the upper ends of the wires Gr H being fastened in a collar secured to the spindle B. The said beater G H is encompassed in a frame consisting ofa base, g, two side pieces, e c, and a box, al d', through which frame the spindle B passes, it being stepped at its lower end into the base g of the frame, as shown at f. I I are-the auxiliary beaters. These are stepped at their lower ends in the said basepiece g ofthe frame, are journaled in the plate d of the box, and are provided at their upper ends with cog-Wheels J J, Which engage with a cog-Wheel secured on the spindle B.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the construction and relative arrangement of the main beater Gr H and the a-uxiliary beaters I I is such that all the beaters are revolved in separate or distinct paths, planes, or circles, (see arrows, Fig. 3;) that the ogee portions of the beaters I I are thrown or revolved in substantially opposite directions, and when doing so interlace with the main beater Gr H without coming in contact with it or with each other; and that the said several beaters G H and I and I successively and repeatedly dash the mixture against the stationary side pieces c c of the frame d c c g.V
Hence a thorough and complete beating or stirring of the mass in which they are submerged takes place without the liability of creating an eddy of the Whole mass, and hence a very efficient and practical device for beating eggs and other liquids is produced.
What I claim as my invention,`and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the beaters G H and I I', of the stationary frame d c g, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
DONALD D. MAOKAY.
