Be it known that Josnrrr ADAMS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Roxbury, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Rotary Brushes, ofwhich the following is a specication. y
This invention relates to rotary brushes and particularly to brushes of lthis char? acter made up of a plurality of sections mounted upon a tubular member, the endsI of which are secured to a revoluble shaft.
yThe present invention consists innovel readily by reference to the description of v' the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof is illus-I trated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described except as rey quired by the scope of the appended claims.

Inthe drawings, 10 is a revoluble shaft having mounted thereon the split disks l1 having split hubs 12.
Surrounding each, split hub 12 is a collar lthrough which extends a set screw lll, this screw extending through a hub 12 and impinging upon the shaft 10 so'that' said vdisks 11 willrotate with said shaft.
The `disks 11 have cylindrical portions which lit within annular flanges 15 projecting outwardly from the heads 16 which are secured to said disks l1 by means of screws 17. These heads 16 are threaded to the opposite ends of a tube 18 surrounding the shaft 10 and spaced therefrom.
Between the heads 16 and surrounding the tube 18 area plurality of brush sections19`, one complete section being shown in the center of F ig. 1 of the drawings.
These brush sections 19y are composed of a plurality of metal rings 2O the opposite faces of which are provided with aplurality of radial depressions 21, the depressions on one face being intermediate the depressions on Vthe opposite face.
Eachring 2O has on each face thereof a thin layer of lead 22 forming a lining'for the depressions 21.
lhen the rings 20 are assembled the ldepressions on adjacent faces are in register and form cylindrical leaddined holes in which are disposed clusters of bristles 23, the inner ends of said bristles being forced into the lead liningr of the holes when the rings 2O are clamped together.
Each brush section 19 composed ofva plurality `of rings 20 when clamped together has positioned therein one or more tubular members 24 extending from end to end thereof with the outer endsV of said'tubularmembers 24 upset to retain each sectional o unit intact.

and rods 25 are inserted through the tubular members of the several units 19, these rods 25 efectually preventing one section or unit from rotating about the tube 18 independently of the other sections. l
In fact the rods 25 form locks which compel the various sections to rotate together.
The heads 16 have screws 26 extending .therethrough into the end unit-s or sections 19 e tion and this support must be of such a character that it may be displaced when it is desired to remove the tube 18 from the shaft- 10 is order to substitute new brush sections ld for those which have Vbecome unservice# a e. In order to accomplish this object a split cylinder 27 is inserted into the center of the tube 18, said cylinder having sufiicient length to stiften the tube and prevent the vibration thereof.
When the cylinder 27 is contracted it can be inserted readily in the tube 18 but when it is expanded by the insertion of the tapered plug 28 into its tapered bore its periphery will be forced into rigid contact with the inner wall of the tube 18, so that it cannot be displaced accidentally.
Any desired number of units: 19 may be vmounted upon the tube 18Aand`any number of rings 20 may `be installed in each unit 19 so that the completed brush will be of such a length as to adapt it forkany particular workfor which it may be designed to perform.
Vith a filler such as the split cylinder 27 installed within the tube 18 intermediate its ends, the tube is retained in perfect alinement during its rotation and all vibration of the brush is entirely eliminated.
By making the depressions 21 on one face of the rings 20 intermediate the depressions Aon the opposite face, the clusters of bristles 23 will be staggered with some of the bristles in each row overlapping the bristles in the adjacent rows.
Vhen the bristles 23 become worn and it is desired to replace them, the upper part of each split disk 11 has the screws 17 removed therefrom so that sai-d part may be removed, the collar 13 having first been removed from the hub 1 2.
Vhen this has been done, the shaft 10 may then be lifted out of the bearings in the lower part of the disks 11 and hubs 12.
The tapered plug 28 secured to the shaft 10 by a screw 29 is then removed from the cylinder 27 secured to the tube 18 by screw 80, when the shaft 10 is drawn out of the tube 18.
The tube 18 with the brush sections 19 thereon may then be sent to the brushv assembling roo-m, at which point the screws 26 may be removed from the heads 16 and one of heads removed from the tube 18.
The brush units 19 may then be slipped olf of the tube 18 and replaced by new units 19, the head 16 screwed ontothe tube 18 and the screws 26 inserted through said heads into the end sections 19.
The tube 18, with the brush sections 19 mounted thereon and clamped together by the heads 16, is then returned to the machine and reassembled upon the shaft 10 in the manner previously described.
This makes a very simple but eective means for constructing long rotary brushes to be used in many classes of machines.
yThe operation and many advantages of the invention will be apparent without further description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. The combination of a tube; annular heads secured to the opposite ends thereof; brush sections surrounding said tube between said heads; a tubular member extending through each brush section; and a rod extending through the tubular members of all of said brush sections.
2. The combination of a tube; annular heads secured to the opposite endsy thereof; brush sections surrounding said tube between saidl heads, each sectionbeing composed o-f a plurality ofdisks having radial depressions in the face thereof; and a shaft secured to said heads and centrally disposed within said tube and separated from the inner wall thereof.
3'. The combination of a tube; annular heads secured to the opposite ends thereof; a plurality of unitary brush sections surrounding said tube between said heads; means preventing independent movement of said brush sections; and screws extending through said heads into the outer brush sections.

The combination of a tube; annular heads secured to the opposite ends thereof; brush sections surrounding said tube between said heads and revoluble therewith; and a two-part filling member. within and intermediate the ends of said tube, the two parts of which are adjustable endwise relatively to each other.
5. The combination of a tube; annular heads secured to the opposite ends thereof; brush sections surrormding said tube between said heads and revoluble therewith; a split cylinder fitting the central portion of said tube and having a tapered bore; and a tapered plug within said cylinder.
6. The combination of a tube; annular heads secured to the opposite ends thereof; brush sections surrounding said tube between said heads and revoluble therewith; a split cylinder fitting the central portion of said tube; and means for expanding said cylinder. i
