Be it known that I, ADA B. TENDEL, -a citizen .of the United States, residing at Smithland, in the county of lVoodbury, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
, This invention relates to new and useful improvements in closures, and particularly to closures for fruit jars and the like.
One object of the invention is to provide a closure which will effectively seal the contents of the jar against entrance of air.
Another object is to provide novel and efficient means for clamping the closure on the jar.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken inl connection with the accompanying drawing.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper portion of a jar, and its cover, illustrating the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the closure showing the cam projections thereon.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional detail view of a modification of the form shown in Figures 1 and 2, wherein the mouth of the jar extends above the upper rubber seat.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional detail View of a further modification of the device, wherein a rubber ring is seated within a groove in the upper end of the mouth of the jar.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the cruciform clamp member removed from the jar and closure.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the upper portion of a fruit jar having the neck 11 formed with a circumferential flange 12 intermediate the shoulder of the jar and the mouth thereof, said flange being formed with a plurality ofmvertical notches or cut-out portions 13. The closure is in the form of a cap lll, having the depending flange 15, which embraces the portion of the neck 11, altrove the flange 1.2, and formed in the bruti1 zontal lower face of the cap is a circular groove 16, within which is seated a gasket 1.7, for engagement `on the upper face of the neck of the jar. Disposed on the flange 12 is a similar gasket 18, against which .the lower face of the flange of the cover bears, when the cover is in proper position on the jar. On the upper face of the cover are the circular series of cam lugs 19, arranged adjacent the peripheral edge of the cover.
A cruciform metal member 2O is disposed on the upper face of the cover and has the outer end of each of its arms turned downwardly and inwardly, as shown at 21, said portions 21 being arranged to pass downwardly through the notches 13, in the flange 12, and to engage beneath the said flange, upon rotating said member. This engagement of the portions 21 with the flange pre vvent upward movement of the cruciform member, the intermediate portions of the arms of said member, however, engaging with the cam lugs 19, whereby said arms are flexed upwardly to produce ypressure on the cover, and thereby compress the gaskets to render the jar air tight. The upper faces of the cam lugs are roughened, as well as the lower faces of the arms of the member 20, at the portions where said arms engage with the faces of the lugs. This will insure proper and firm engagement between the arms and lugs, to prevent accidental displacement of the clamping member. To remove the clamping member 2O said member may be rotated until the arms drop from the highest portions of the cam lugs, or rotated in the opposite direction, or toward the lower ends of the lugs. It will be noted that the lugs are highest in the centers, and taper, or incline toward the opposite ends. Upon reaching these lower points, the ends of the` arms of the member 2() will have reached the notches 13, thus permitting the free upward removal of the member.
Referring to Figure l, there is shown a modification of the device, wherein there are provided the two steps 22, or ledges, on which are disposed the rubber rings 23 and '24, the mouth of the jar, as indicated at 25,
extending above the upper step. The initerior. of the closure is correspondingly jar ffiirrued with groeve in its upper and face, as shown at 27, and within this groove is seated a rubber ring 2S. The lower face of the closure 29 is formed with a circular flange 30 which enters the groove 27, and compresses the rubber ring, When the clamping member 2O is properly applied thereto. It will also be understood that the clamping member 2() is used in connection With the form of Figure 4, said member 2O being shown in Figure 6.
What is claimed is:
A jar including a neck having external and peripheral flanges the loWermost of which projects beyond the face of the neck,
said lowermost lange being provided with vertical openings, a cover having a depending peripheral flange formed with internal steps arranged to be seated on the stepped flangesr of the neck, gaskets on the stepped ianges and engaged by the steps of the cover, and a yoke extended across the cover and having its ends extended inwardly for passage through said openings and engagement beneath said lovvermost -flange of the neck.
