Be it known that 1, Norman ll, VVHITE, a citizen of the llnited States, and a resident of Brookline, in the county ot Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have inventeifl certain new and useful Improvements in (over Attachments of which the following is a specification, rcterence being made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof,
My invention relates to certain improve ments in cover-attachments for containers and in fastening devices therefor, when such rovers are cn'iployed as closure means, and the principal aim of my improvement is to provide a simple and eflicient cover structure with fastening means tor such cover to seal against leakage the oppositely-dis posed openings within the re-entrant head ends formed in the type of ice-cream freezer set forth in the lVilliam B. McCann Patent No. 1,013,672 of January 2, 1912, where it is desirable that both the cover and its tastening means shall be contained within the depressed end space lying below the. outer rim of: the freezer.
A further object of my invention is to provide a cover-attacl'iment which shall detachably. yet effectively, secure the cover on the openings so as to afford a tight joint while embodying therein a handle for the freezer which, when lifted, will not spring or loose the parts which fasten the cover on the container openings thereby producing leakage. A further object is to simplify and cheapen the construction of such coverat-tachments without loss of strength or eiliciency in operation in forming a tight seal for container openings.

The cover 13 consists of a circular sheetmetal structure having a cylindrical depressed portion lt formed therein, which portion is adapted to fit within the openings 8 and 9 as shown. The cover 13 alsohas the flat rim 15 surrounding the depressed portion 14, the rim 15 carrying on its under side the gasket 16 formed of rubber or other suitable material to coact with the annular beading'ltl as shown in Figure 1. Extend. ing diametrically across the depressed portion 14 is the flat cross-bar 17 rigidly secured to the rim 15 at diametrically opposite points which cross-bar has the fiat end projections 18 and 19 which are adapted to engage within the continuous recessed channel members 20 and '21 diagonally arranged on the end portions 5 and secured thereto at both ends adjacent the openings 8 and 9 by the rivets 22 in a tangential position relatively to such openings, as shown in Fig ure 3.
i As shown more particularly in Figure 2 the recessed channel members 20 and 21 are so shaped as to provide an inclined or beveled under surface 23 to engage with the crossbar projections 18 and 19, the larger opening 2% relatively to theend portion 5 in the particular embodiment shown being tormed in that end having the single rivet such end portion 5. The upper surface of the flat. projections 18 and 19 being inserted at the larger opening 24 as shown in dotted lines inFigure 2 slides to the left in this side the recessed channel members and 2 1 the cover is then rotated in an anticlockwise direction asindicated by the arrow, when the projections 18 and 19: will pass beneath the opening 24 and engage the inclinedunder surface 23;. The cover 13 is then further rotated in the same direction which movement forces the cover downwardly into the openings, the gasket 16 forming a tight seal on the heading 10 preventing all leakage, while the frictional engagement of the cross-bar projections 18 and 19 in their progressively increasing surface engagement on the inclined under surface 23 of the continuous recessed channel members secured at either end to the, end portions 5 provides a strong and unyielding closure forthe openings 8 and 9-, particularly when the freezerstructure is lifted by using the; cross-bar 1,7 as a handle.
I have; discovered that the use of these continuous recessed channel members forms a simple yet exceptionally: strongattachment for the cover while affording a lifting device for the freezer without in anyway springor loosening the parts; or breaking the seal between the gasketand heading when art.
the freezer is lifted by the; cross-bar 17 It will; be observed as. well. that such cover and its fasteningdevices are all contained within; the reentrant h ads endof the freezer, which is essential since the freezer structure 1: sts on the floor-or-other support on one: of the circular end portions.
While I have shown; and described my improvement as. embodiment in an icecream. freezer, I do notwish to restrict same tosuch use as it may be efl'ectively employed in fastening covers to form a closure means for difi'erent fiorms of containers as will be readily understood by those skilled in the I claim as my invention 1. In a cover attachment, a rotatable circular cover, a clamping-bar'having flat end projections; secured rigidly and; diametrically across the cover, said projections extending beyond the cover rim, a container having an annular reentrant head with an inner concentric opening for the cover, and a pair of elongated and mutually parallel loop recessed channel members, each tangentially disposed adjacent said cover opening with its spaced-apart ends secured to said reentrant head, said members having their recessed channels arranged obliquely to radial lines across said cover opening, whereby said bar end projections when rotated slidingly engage said members with a mutually increasing surface to thereby frictionally hold said clamping-bar and cover in position on said opening.

In a cover attachment, a. rotatable circular cover, a clamping-bar having flat end projections secured rigidly and diametri- Cally across the cover, said projections extending beyond the cover rim, a container having an annular reentrant head with an inner concentric opening for the cover, and a pair of elongated and mutually parallel loop recessed -hannel members, each tangentially disposed adjacent said cover opening with its spaced-apart ends secured'to said reentrant head, said members having their recessed channels arranged obliquely to radial lines across said cover opening, and provided also with inclined under surfaces oppositely disposed, whereby said bar end projections slid-ingly engage said members with a mutually increasing surface-tosurface contact to frictionally hold said clamping-bar and cover in position on. said opening when said bar and cover are rotated.

In a cover attachment, a rotatable circular cover having a depressed portion inside an outer rim, a clamping bar having flat end projections secured rig-idly to the rim and diametrically across the cover, said projections extending beyond the cover rim, a container having an annular reentrant head with an inner concentric opening for the cover, and a pair of straight elongated and mutually parallel loop recessed channel members, each tangentially disposed adjacent said cover opening with its spacedapart ends secured to, said reentrant head, said members having their recessed channels arranged obliquely to radial l'ines across said cover opening, whereby said bar end projections when rotated slidingly engage said members with a mutually increasing surface-to-surface contact to frictionally hold said clamping-bar and cover in sealing position on said opening.
41. In a cover attachment, a rotatable circular cover having a depressed portion inside an outer rim, a clamping-bar having flat end projections secured rigidly to the rim and diametrically across the cover, said projections extending beyond the cover rim, a container having an annular reentrant head with an inner concentric opening for the cover, and a pair of straight elongated and mutually parallel loop recessed channel members each tangentially disposed adjacent said cover opening with its spacedapart ends secured to said reentrant head, said members having their recessed channels arranged obliquely to radial lines across said cover opening and provided also with in (lined under surfaces oppositely disposed, whereby said bar end projections slidingly engage said under surfaces with a mutually increasing surtace-to-surface contact to frictionally hold said clampingbar and cover in sealing position on said opening when said bar and cover are rotated.
In a cover-attachment, a rotatable circular cover. a clamping-bar rigidly secured diametrically thereto with flat end projections extending beyond the cover rim, a c011 tainer having a circular reentrant cover opening, and a pair of straight mutually parallel loop recessed channel members, each tangentially disposed adjacent said cover opei'iing with its spacedapart ends secured to said reentrant head, said members having their recessed channels arranged obliquely to radial lines across said cover-opening, whereby said bar end projections slidingly engage said members with a mutually in creasing surtazeto-surface contact to inwardly force and frictionally hold Said cover in said opening when the bar and cover are rotated in unison in a predetermined direction.

In a cover attachment, a rotatable circular cover, a clamping-bar rigidly secured diametrically thereto with flat end projections extending beyond the cover rim, a container having a circular reentrant cover opening, and a pair of straight mutually parallel loop recessed channel members, each tangentially disposed adjacent said cover opening with its spaced-apart ends secured to said reentrant head, said members having their recessed channels arranged obliquely to radial lines across said cover-opening and provided also with oppositely extending inclined under surfaces. whereby said bar end projections slidingly engage said under surfaces with a mutually increasin surfaceto-surface contact to inwardly force and frictionally hold said cover in said opening when the bar and cover are rotated in unison in a predetermined direction NORMAN H.
