To ZZ whom it may concern.' y
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. DnDoUo-H, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Park, in the county of Cook `and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvementl in Medallion Mountings, of which the following is a'specification.
This invention relates to mountings for medallions and the like and in particular to medallions havinga porcelain or earthenware body which are particularly adapted to be secured to the'faces of tombstones and the like.
The invention is fully described inthe following specication and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a medallion embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the line 4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clip for securing it to the face of the tombstone;
Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of a modified form of the device;
Fig. 7 Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the clip shown in Fig. 6; v
Fig. 9 is a rear elevation modification of the device;
Fig. 10 is a vertical section on the line 10 of Fig. 9;
Figs. 11 and 12 are is a vertical section on*k the line 7 of of a further perspective views of the clip and cross bar respectively shown in Fig. 9;
Fig. 13 is a rear elevation of a further modification of the'device; and l Figs. 14 and 15 arevertical and horizontal sections on the lines 14 and 15 respectively of Fig. 15.
,'Ihe embodiment shown in Fig. 1 Vconn` prises a medallion 16 upon the eonvexly curved outer face of whieh'may be formed a picture. emblem or the like. The rear surface of the body 16 is preferably `flat with a horizontally disposed depression 17 therein. Overhanging lips 18 overlie this depression near its center.
A clip 19 having straight sides is adapted to snap into this depression and beneathr the lips 18. Inwardly facing spring fingers 20' and 2l are formed from the middle of the clip 19 and project therefrom on the means of the expander bolt 26.
yan lexpander bolt 26 after.
Vbehind the shoulders same Vside of the clip so that as the` clip is forced under the lips 18 these fingers will engage the bottom of the depression 17.
Shoulders `22 and 23 are formed in the G0 bottom of the depression and arel adapted Ato be engaged bythe ends of the spring fingers 2O and 21, so that as the clip is forced inwardly the spring finger 21 will carry over the edge of the shoulder 23 and 05- snap behind it so that the clip can not be withdrawn. The upper end of the clip 24 is offset so as to lie substantially flat on the surface 25 to which it 1s adapted to be secured as by means of an expander bolt 26, of any well known type, passing through the opening 27, the bolt 26 being secured to the base 25. To prevent the clip 19 fromfturning about the bolt 26, an extension 24a projects from 75 a convenient point as from the end 24 and into the surface 25. rIhis also enables the clip to be held in a horizontal position when it is desirable to place themedallion with its long axis horizontal.
hns to secure the vmedallion to the'surface 25, the clip V19 is secured thereto by The medallion 16 is then pushed up over the clip 19 until the springfinger 21 snaps over the 85 shoulder 23 when it can no longer beremoved. The bolt 26 is preferablyplaced at the top as illustrated, so thatthe weight i of the medallion hangs therefrom.
4 In Figs. 6 to 8 is shown a modification 90 of the device in Which. a spring clip 27 has two ears 28 which project from the sides and 7 which are adapted to slide up over inclined shoulders 29 which terminate in shoulders 30. The clip 27 is secured to the face of 95 a wall as previously described, by means of `which. the medallion 31 is placed over it and the 'medal-1 lion vforced upuntiltheears 28 snap down y 30, thereby locking the 100 medallion onto ythe clip. As in the e1nbodi' ment previously shown and described the clip and its attaching screw 26 being covered by the medallion, the whole is similarly secured to the surface of the tomb- 10.5 stone and can not be removed without dam-- age thereto.
Figs. 9 to 12 show a still further modifica tion of the device in which ametal bar 32 is secured in the rear part of tlie'medallion 110 and extends transversely across' the vertical deli-session Sei.. this clip e5 which be understood that sa p 1,574,373
is secured to the tace of the tombstone as shown in Fig. 3 is a long `ybody SGvWhich extends longitudinally through the slotk 34 and over the baclr of the transverse bar 32. It has a spring finger 37 which passes over the bar and snapsV behind it so as-to prevent the removal of the clip therefrom. Stops 3S on the clip 35 limit the distance to which it can be forced in, While the sides or' the clipk engaging the sides of the depression 34 prevent the medallion from being moved laterally with respect to the clip. This risalso true o'i the form shown in Fig. 6. t
Figs. 13,14 and 15 showv another modification of the device in Which the medallion 39 has -a large depression 40 in its rear surface with a centrally disposed post rising therefrom. l lips 42 terminating in shoulders 43. The spring metal clip 44 is secured as previously described, to the surface to which it is desiredto fasten the medallion and vthis is biturcated to provide spring fingers 45 ivhich pass on opposite sides of the post 41 and ov r the lips 42.
The fingers 45 are bent outwardly at 46 to provide shoulders which will snap over the shoulders 43. These are then terminated in beveled portions 47.
To apply this device to a tombstone or `the like, a clip 44 is secured thereto as by means of an expander bolt as shown in Fig. 3. yThe medallion 39 is then' pressed upwardly forcing-the inclined ends 47 over the rlips 42 `until the shoulders 46 snap behind the shoulders 4S thereby retaining the clip on the back ofthe medallion. The slot between the lingersU 45 is only slightly larger than the post 41 and of such a depth as to just permit the shoulders 46 to snap over the shoulders 43.
lVhile l have shown and described but a few embodiments voithis invention, it is to it is capable of many modiiications. Changes thereforek in the construction and arrangement may be made which 'do not depart 4from Vthe spirity 'and scope oit the invention as' disclosed in the appended claims. f
