To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN VVALDHEIM, a citizen of the United States, residin in Elizabeth. in the county of Union and tate of New Jersy, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to machines for T0 typing upon continuous work-webs, each crimprising a plurality of superimposed p 1es, printed forms in register, the plies being separate in some cases. andin other cases being joined at their side edges to form fanfold webs.
In such machines, after typing has been effected on the form on the outside ply and carbon copies made on the inner plies by means of interleaved carbon-sheets,-the carbon-sheets and the web-plies are shifted relatively to each other to enable the carbonsheets to be used with a fresh set of forms. It has been found impracticable to'efi'ect such relative shifting while the web-plies and interleaved carbons are bent'around a considerable part of a usual round platen.
Consequently, it has been the practice in the Underwood continuous billing machine, to displace the platen upwardly to permit the plies to bestraightened thereunder and the carbon-sheets to be retracted by a carboncarrier on a substantially horizontal table extending rearwardly from the carriage.
It has. however, been found practicable to effect relative shifting of the web-plies. and the carbon-sheets when they are bent around a curved support of comparatively large radius, and therefore by the provision of suitable means at the rear of the typewriter to permit the use of the standard typewriter without any provision for upward displacement of the platen.

To retract the carbon-carrier, provision including-a link and two gear segments to a transverse shaft having fixed thereon, at its middle. an arm with a forked end engaging a rod beneath the table and extending from end to end of the carbon-carrier beneath the table, so that the arm may be in effective engagement with the rod irrespective of the position ofthe typewriter-carriage.
To prevent relative displacement between the web-plies and the carbon'sheets and also to relieve the, carbon-sheets of unnecessary strain during the rearward movement of the carbon-carrier, provision is made of a device for clamping the web-plies at the rear edge of the carbon-carrier, and of means for automatically releasing the clamp when the carbon-carrier is retracted to the full extent, thereby permitting the web-plies to be advanced while the carbon-sheets are held stationary.
- It should be understood that the distance between the two forward edge gages is equal to the distance between the extreme rearward position of the forward ends of the carbon-sheets and their position whenready v the platen are fixed together, so that only one adjustment is necessary when a change is made from one length of form to another.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

A platen 11 is journaled in theends 12 of a platen-frame 13 comprising a rear paper-table 14 and forming part of a carriage 15 supported at its rear on a rail 16 fixed to the typewriter frame 17. The typewriter frame 17 is mounted on a base 18, which also serves to support a -frame 19. having fixed thereto at its rear a rail 20 to support the rear end of a rearward extension 21 of the carriage 15. The extension 21 comprises a curved table 22 mounted on a frame comprising two curved side members 23 and front and rear cross-members 24 and 25, respectively. At its front the extension 21 is connected to the carriage by means of brackets 26 secured to the carriage b means of screws 27, and secured to the sic e members 23 by screws 28. At its rear the extension 21 is supported on the rail 20 by means of a roll 29 resting thereon and pivotally mounted on a central bracket 30, secured to the cross-rod 25 and having its lower end extending forwardly beneath the rail 20 to prevent the roll 29 from being lifted there from.
Mounted on the. table 22 is a carboncarrier 32 having adjacent its edges, on the lower side thereof, grooved rolls 33 en aging the edges of the table 22. The car oncarrier 32 has stepped blocks 34 at opposite ends thereof, and projecting inwardly from said blocks 34 are detachable carbon-blades 35, to which are secured the rear ends of carbon-sheets 36.
F or retracting the carbon-carrier 32, provision is made of a handle 37 mounted to swing about a pivot 38 on the right-hand side of the typewriter frame, said handle 37 being connected by aulink 39 with an arm 40 mounted on a pivot 41, and having at its upper end a toothed sector 42 in mesh with a toothed sector 43 fixed on a shaft 44 journaled in arms 45 extending upwardly from the sides of the frame 19. When the handle 37 is swung forwardly the shaft-44 will be turned in a counter-clockwise direction, Figures 1 and 3," and, by means of an arm 46 fixed on the shaft 44 near its middle point, will shift the carbon-carrier 32 rearwardly, the connection between the arm 46 and the carbon-carrier being effected by engagement of a fork at the upper end of the arm 46 with a rod 47 inside of the side members23, and supported at its-ends in brackets 48 projecting downwardlly from the sides of the carbon-carrier 32.
The carbon-carrier 32 is provided near its rear edge with a work-web clamp comprising a fixed bar or jaw 49 and a co-operating bar or jaw 50 mounted on arms 51- pivoted at 52 on ears 53 projecting upwardly from the carbon-carrier at opposite edges thereof, the
bar 50 being pressed toward the bar'49 by a spring 54 attached at one end to one of said arms 51 and at the other to the carbon-carrier 32. One of the arms 51 is provided with acam-extension 55 to co-operate with a pin 56 on an arm 57 attached to the extension 21 to move the bar 50 away from the bar 49 when the carbon-carrier 32 reaches the position shown in Figure 3' with the clamping bar 49 thereof resting on a stop 58 fixed to the table 22.
When the machine is to be used, the carbon-carrier 32.is brought to a convenient po sition and the clamping bar 50 separated from the bar 49 to permit the plies 59 of a work-web 60 to be drawn through the carbon-carrier. When a suitable length of the work-web 60 has been drawn between the clamping bars 49 and 50, the clamping bar 50 may be released to press the web against the bar 49. All of the plies 59, except the one to pass around the platen on the outside, are lifted, and a carbon-sheet 36 is then inserted in the opening thus formed, and the carbon-blade 35 to which the carbon-sheet is attached is connected with the stepped support or bl0ck'34 at the left-hand side of the carbon-carrier. The next ply 59 is then placed on the carbon-sheet just inserted and the web-ply or plies lying outside thereof on the table 22 are held away therefrom to form an opening in which is placed a second carbon-sheethaving its rear end attached to a second carbon-blade 35, which, in'turn, is attached to the block 34 on the right-hand side of the carbon-carrier. The carbonsheets 36 are made of such length that when the carbon-carrier is in its rearward position the forward endsof the carbon-sheets will lie to therear of the platen, as shown in Figure 3.
Furthermore, in interleaving the carbonsheets 36 between the plies 59 theyare so positioned that the forward ends of the plies extend beyond the ends of the carbon-sheets, as indicated in Figure 3. The forward ends of the plies59 may then be inserted between the platen l1 and feed-rolls, whichmay be the usual rear feed-rolls 61, the machine being equipped with the usual rear and front feed-rolls 61and 62, respectively, carried by arms 63 and 64, which are controlled by the usual cast-off shaft 65 connected in the usual manner with a cast-off finger-piece 66. After the forward ends of the plies 59 have been inserted between the platen and the cast-off rear feed-rolls, the feed-rolls may be restored and the platen advanced, by means of a finger-wheel 67 or the usual line-spacing mechanism including a ratchet-wheel 68, to pass beneath a knife 69 supported above a front paper-table 70 mounted on a bar 71, which, in turn, is supported by brackets 72 on the sides or ends 12 of the platen-frame. Provision is also made of a gage-bar 73 extending upwardly and rearwardly in the same general direction as the table 70. The advance of the plies 59 is continued until the forward ends thereof align with a gage 74, the carbon-carrier being held in its rearward position during such movement. The carbon-carrier 32 which has been held'in its rearward position, preferably by means of the handle 37, is then released and the webplics 59 and interleaved carbon-sheets 36 are fed forward until the forward ends of the plies 59 contact with a gage positioned at the length of one form from the edge of the knife 69. If'then the first set of forms is severed by means of the knife 69 asecond set of forms and the carbon-sheets will be in position to begin typing thereon, as indi-' In this connection it connected by means'of a connector or bar 76,
the adjustment of the gages being effected by positioning the gage 75 at a distance from the knife 69 equal to the length of the formto be used. As herein disclosed, the gage 74 is the end of the bar .76., When saidgages 74 and 75 have been placed in adjusted position. they may be secured by suitable means such as a screw 77. Preferably the gage-bar is provided with numbered graduations 78 indicating the distances from the edge of the knife 69.
. ,After the second set of forms on the plies 59 is positioned as shown in Figure 5, typing is effected thereon and the plies 59 and carbon-sheets 36 are advanced until the typing on the set of forms is completed, as indicated in Figure 1. The feed-rolls are then cast off and the carbon-carrier 32 moved rearwardly to its Figure 3 position by means of the handle 37. The feed-rolls 61 and 62 are then thrown on by means of thefinger-piece 66 and the, platen rotated until the forward edges of the plies 59 contact with the. gage 74. The carbon-carrier 32 is then released and the plies 59 and carbonsheets 36 are. fed together until the forward ends of the plies 59 are brought into. engagelnent withthe gage 75, Figure 5. The used forms arethen severed and the third set of forms is in position for typing.
Although the manner, just described, of positioning the plies and carbon-sheets to start typing appears to be the most.prac ticable, it should be understood that it may be done in other Ways, as, for example, by positioning the forward edges of the first set of forms the proper distance beyond the ends of the carbon-sheets 36. Obviously, if this method is followed, typing may be of fected on the first set of forms.
. It will be understood that, if desired, the device may be used without the clamping bar 50, the carbons being effective when curved around the platen with the worksheets to draw the work-sheetsrearwardly when the carbon-carrier 32 is moved back to the stop 58. This, however, puts the carbons under considerable tension, which may result in accidentally tearing them. Consequently the clamping bar 50 has been pro vlded to relieve the carbons of any strain and thus avoid tearing of the carbons.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and ortions of the improvements may be used without others.
. Having thus described my invention, I.
claim:
1. In a machine of the class described, a platen, a carriage for the platen, a frame on which the carriage travels, a carbon-carrier at the rear of the platen to retract andhold carbon-sheets in retracted position, a table, on which the carbon-carrier travels, connected with the carriage to travel therewith and curved to provide a great range of movement for the carbon-carrier as compared with the limited height and the distance from front to rear of the space occupied by the table, and means on said'frame for actuating said carbon-carrier irrespective of the position of the carriage.
2. In atmachine of the class described, a. platen, a carriage comprising a platenframe, a carbon-carrier at the rear of the platen to control carbon-sheets interleaved between web-plies in the machine, and a carbon-carrier-track curving gradually from the platen-frame upwardly, rearwardly and downwardly to .provide a track of great length without. occupying much space. at the rear of the machine, the curvature of said track being so gradual as not to intertere with the relative displacement of the webplies and carbon-sheets while resting there- 3. In a machine of the class described, a platen, a carriage for the platen, a frame on which the carriage travels, a carbon-carrier at the rear of the platen for controlling carbon-sheets interleaved between web-plies in the machine, a carbon-carrier support attached tothe carriage to travel therewith, a finger-piece mounted on said frame, and means actuable by said finger-piece for advanctng or retracting said carbon-carrier irrespective of the position of the carriage.
4. In a machineof the class described, a platen,'a carriage for the platen, a frame or which the carriage travels, a carboncarrier at the rear of the platen for controlling carbon-sheets interleaved between webplies in the machine, a carbon-carrier support attached to the carriage to travel therewith, a finger-piece mounted on said frame, and means actuable by said finger-piece for advancing or retractingsaid carbon-carrier irrespective of the position of the carriage, and comprising a connection having parts relatively movable in' a direction transversely of the machine to permit the travel 0? the carriage without breaking the connection.
5. In a machine of the class described, a platen, a carriage for the platen, a frame on which the carriage travels, a carbon-carrier at the rear of the platen for controlling carbon-sheets interleaved between web-plies in the machine, a carbon-carrier support attached to the carriage to travel therewith, a finger-piece mounted on said frame, and means actuable bysaid finger-piece for advancing or retracting said carbon-carrier irrespective of the position of the carriage, and comprising a member extending across the lower side of the carbon-carrier, a second member mounted on said frame forireciprocation forwardly and rearwardly, and a connection between said members consisting of a groove in one of the members, extending transversely of the machine, and a part of the other member to engage in said groove and also extending transversely of the machine.
6. A typewriting machine of the class described, comprising a revoluble platen, a
table curved in an arc of a-circle of such radius as to permit relative displacement of web-plies and interleaved carbon-sheets supported thereon, a carbon-carrier reciprocable on said table, a bar below said table and supported atits ends by said carbon-carrier, and means, comprising a forked member for engagement with said bal irrespective of the position of the carriage, for advancing or retracting said carbon-carrier.
7. A typewriting machine of the class described, comprising a revoluble platen, a traveling carriage therefor, comprising a table curved in an arc of a circle of such radius as to ermit relative displacement of web-plies and interleaved carbon-sheets supported thereon, a carbon-carrier reciprocable on said table, a bar below said table and supported at its ends by said carbon-carrier, and means for advancing or retracting said carbon-carrier, said advancing and retracting means comprising an arm swingable about the axis of said curved table and having a forked end to engage said bar 8. In a machine of the class described, a revolubleplaten, a carriage for said platen, a table extending upwardly and rearwardly from said carriage and curved, so gradually as not to interfere with the relative displacement of the web-plies and interleaved carhon-sheets, over and down to a forwardly and downwardly inclined position at its lower edge, a carbon-carrier reciprocable on said table and comprising carbon-blades to which the rear ends of the carbon-sheets are -attached, a clamp for the web-plies comprisplaten-frame having a paper-table at the delivery side of the platen, feed-rolls to run on the bottom of the platen, a carbon-carrier at the rear of the platen to control carbonsheets interleaved between web-plies having successive forms thereon, a stop to check the rearward movement of the carbon-carrier when the forward ends of the carbon-sheets are withdrawn from the grip of the feedrolls, a knife adjacent said paper-table to sever used portions of the web-plies, a gageguide extending beyond said paper-table, and a gage-device, having two gaging portions in fixed relation to each other, adjustable along said guide to place the more distant gaging portion at the length of a worka traveling carriage therefor, feed-rolls to run on the bottom of the platen, feed-rollcast-oif means, a rearward extension of the carriage comprising a curved table to re.- ceive tangentially weblies drawn uplwardly from a web-supply an to deliver t e web-' plies tangentially to the, platen, a carboncarrier connected to the rear ends of carbon sheets, interleaved with the web-plies,and mounted on said table for moving said webplies and carbon-sheets rearwardly around the platen, while the feed-rolls are cast off, said table being of such curvature-as to permit easy displacement of the web-plies relative to the carbon-sheets, and means on the carbon-carrier to clamp the web-plies atthe rear of the rear ends of the carbon-sheets to relieve the carbon-sheets of the stress of pulling the web-plies rearwardly.
11. A typewriting machine of the charac-. ter described, comprising a revoluble platen, a traveling carriage therefor, feed-rolls to run on the bottom of the platen, feed-rolL cast-0d means, a rearward extenslon of the carriage comprising a curved table to receive tangentially web-plies drawn upwardly from a web-supply and to deliver the webplies tangentially to the platen, a carboncarrier connecte to the rear-ends of care hon-sheets, interleaved with the, web-plies, and mounted on said table for moving said web-plies and carbon-sheets rearwardly around the platen, while the feed-rolls are cast off, said table being of such curvature as to permit easy displacement of-the webplies relative to the carbon-sheets, means on the carbon-carrier for clamping the webplies at the rear of the rear ends of the carbon-sheets to relieve the carbon-sheets of rhe stress of pulling the web-plies rearwardly, and. means for releasing the clamp when the carbon-carrier reaches its rearmost position. 12. In a machine of the class described, a platen, a carbon-carrier arranged to simultaneously withdraw work-webs and inter leaved carbon-sheets around the platen or to hold said carbon-sheets stationary and out of control of the platen while said workwebs are shifted, a paper-table at the delivery side of the platen, a severing blade across said table, a age-bar forming a prolongation of saidta le and having thereon a scale marked to show distances from the edge of said blade, and a gage having two gaging portions, one of said portions comprising an advanced gage to be positioned along said scale at a reading corresponding to the length of formto be used and the other of said portions comprising a gage positioned beneath said advanced gage to determine the proper amount of shifting of a typed port onof the web-plies relative to. the interleaved carbon-sheets while the carbon-sheets are held stationary and out of the control" of the platen.
13. In a machine of the classdescribed, a typewriter-frame, a platen, a platen-carriage having a rear paper-table and mounted to travel on said typewriter-frame,'a rail supported at a low elevation and spaced from the rear of the ty ewriter-frame, a carboncarrier, and a car on-carrier-track, curved substantially in the arc of a circle, supported on the carriage with its forward edge adjacent the upper edge of the rear papertable andat its rear supported on said rail to "travel therealong.
14. In a machine ofthe class described, a i
reciprocable carbon-carrier connected with the rear ends of carbon-sheets interleaved between web-plies in the machine, a clamp on said carbon-carrier to grlp the web-plies at the rear of the rear ends of the carbonsheets, and means for automatically releas 111g said clamp when the carbon-carrier ar-. rives at its rearmost position.
15. In a continuous billing. typewriting machine, the combination of aplaten, a car riage to support said laten, a carbon-can rier to control carbon-s eets interleaved between work-sheets fed around the platen, said carbon-carrier being arranged to travel with said carriage, and adapted to travel in an arc toward and away from the platen, means to actuate said carrier to bring the carbon-sheets with the work-sheets to a position where they may be relatively shifted,
and means to uide said carrier in its move-v ments relative y to the platen.
16. In a continuous billing typewriting 'machine, the combination of a platen, a
carriage to support said platen, a carboncarrier to control carbon-sheets interleaved between work-sheets fed around the platen, said carbon-carrier bein arranged to travel with said carriage, an adapted to travel in an arc toward and away from the platen, means to actuate said carrier, means to guide said carrier in its movements relatively to the platen, and a curved table between the carbon-carrier and the platen, over which the work-sheets and the carbon-sheets may be guided to said platen.

In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination of a main frame, a carriage to travel on said frame, a platen on said carriage, a carbon-carrier controlling carbon-sheets interleaved between work sheets fed around said platen to travel toward and away from said platen, means to cause said carrier to travel with said carriage, an operating handle on said main frame, and means. comprising a connection whereby said carbon-carrier may be actuated by said handle, said connecting means being so constructed to allow the carbon-carrier to 7 travel with said carriage independently of said handle.
19. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination with a main frame, a carriage to travel on said frame, a platen on said carriage, a table connected to said carriage and curved upwardly, rearwardly and downwardly from the back of the platen,
- a carboncarrier controlling carbon-sheets invices, a curved table at the back of said platen, co-operating with said devices and providing a support for the work-sheets, and upon which the carbon-carrier travels toward and away from the platen, and a ,handle to eifect the actuation of said devices to withdraw the work-sheets with the carbon-s around the platen, to bring the leading edges of the carbons clear of the platen, so that the work-sheets may be fed forwardly independently of said carbons.
21. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a carriage to support said platen, a carbon-carrier to control carbon-sheets interleaved between work-sheets fed around the platen, said carbon-carrier being pivotally supported and adapted to be swung to and away from the laten, and a finger-piece to actuate said caron-carrier.
22. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a curved'table at the rear of the platen, a carbon-carrier arranged to move upon said table to and away from said platen for simultaneously moving interleaved carbons and work-web rearwardly around said platen and over the table, and a clamping device associated with said carrier for securely clamping said carbons and work-web together whereby to relieve the carbons of stress when moving said web around the platen.
23. In a continuous billing typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a curved table at the rear thereof, and a carbon-carrier having carbons interleaved with work-web, said carbon-carrier movable around said table to withdraw the leading edges of said carbons from beneath the platen.
