Description

H. W. C0 RNELL.
Corn-SheIIe rs.
Patented Dec. 1,1874.
WESSES INVENTOR Attorneys.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARMON W. CORNELL, OF OWEGO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-SHELLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,380, dated December 1, 1874 application filed June 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARMON W. CORNELL, of Owego, in the county of Tioga and .in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Sheller and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
My present invention is intended as an improvement upon the corn-sheller for which Letters Patent No. 128,124 were granted to me June 18, 1872; and the nature of myinvention consists in the construction of the hinged jaws and the angular bar to which they are hinged, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the angular bar with the jaws hinged thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of apart of the angular bar, and Fig. 3 is a section through the upper end of the jaw.
A A represent-the two toothed jaws, each provided with the arm B, as described in my former patent above referred to. The upper end of each jaw A is formed rounded, as shown, and in the same is cast a wrought-iron rod, C, to project a short distance on both sides, and form journals for the jaw. D represents the angular bar arranged across the front part of the throat of the corn-sheller. On the outer side of this bar, at the angle, is cast an angular projection, D, having an angular groove, a, formed in its upper surface. Near each end of the angular bar D is cast a projection, D having a groove, 1), formed in its upper surface. These projections with their grooves form the bearings for the projecting ends of the wrought-iron rods C C cast in the upper ends of the jaws A A, and said journals are held in said grooved projections by caps E E, which are bolted on the projections, as shown. v
By this means of forming the bearings for the jaws AA there are no holes to be drilled, but everything is cast ready to he put together. Either one of the jaws A A may be readily detached from theangular bar D by taking out the bolts and lifting 011' the caps without disturbing the other jaw.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the angular bar D, provided with the grooved projections D 1) D the jaws A A, provided with the journal-rods C C, and the separately-removable caps E E E, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of May, 1874..
H. W. CORNELL.
