UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. BRIGHT, OF BERNVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,367, dated December 1, 1874; application filed October 23, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. BRIGHT, of Bernville, Berks county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Horse-Collars, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to so construct a horse-collar that, in case the neck of the horse becomes galled, the sore spot can be relieved from pressure and abrasion without interfering with the proper duties of the collar; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, and which is shown in the rear view, Figure l, and sectional view, Fig. 2, of the accompanying drawing.
In constructing my improved horse-collar, I use a wooden frame, A, of a shape approximating to that of an ordinary horse-collar; and to this frame I attach, by means of buckles and straps or otherwise, a number of detachable pads, B, each of which consists of a bag of leather or suitable fabric, stuffed with hair or other appropriate filling material; and to the top of the frame Ais secured a similar pad, of a size large enough to extend completely across from one side to the other of the said frame.
By thus constructing the collar, any portion of the neck of a horsewhich shows signs of galling may be relieved from further abrasion by removing the pad which bears upon the galled spot. The pad being of limited dimension, its removal will not detract from the proper functions of the collar. In fact, if two or even three pads, arranged at a distance from each other, be removed, the collar will continue to perform its proper duty.
By thus relieving the galled place the extension of the sore will not only be prevented, but the sore itself will have an opportunity to become quickly healed.
In the present instance the pads are secured to the frame by attaching to the latter two buckles, ac w, for each pad, which is provided with two straps, y y, one for each buckle.
I claim as my invention- A horse-collar consisting of a frame, A, combined with a number of detachable pads, B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN M. BRIGHT. Witnesses:
