Be it known that I, THOMAS- E. Trro ursoN,
a citizen of the United States residin at 5508 Lexington Street Chica o in the county of Cook and Stateof Illinois, have invented new and useful improvements in Automobile Signaling Devices, oi which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an automobile signaling device and'has for its primary object the construction and association of various signaling devices into a very uniqiie'and compact apparatus.
An object of the invention is the novel manner of associating the parts so that a single electric bulb is capableto provide all the illumination necessary for the various signaling elements. I
lVith the above and other objects view, the invention will bebetter understood from the following description taken in connecstruction of my invention.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation. v
Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view through a portion thereof. I
Again referring to the drawings illustrating two of the many constructions of my i vention and more particularly to Figures 1,
2-, 3 and lythe numeral 1 designates a housinghaving anextension 2 provided with slots 3 for attachment to the housing of the automobile and further for supporting the usual license plate. Arranged within this housingis a single bulb lightrays from which may pass through the open bottom 5 oft-he casing so as to illuminate the license plate. The housing is further provided with an opening 6 at the top 5 for the purpose hereinafter described.
This housing supports a redlens l' for giving the permanent signal known as a tail light. Supported by the housing directly above the, lens 7 is aplate 8 having letters cut therein provided ith suitable word or group of words, to give proper informaclaims hereunto appended.

This plate 8' is normally closed byqa-v shutter 9 pivotedtothe housing as indicated socket 11 for removably receiving the tongue 12 ofthe display device 13 which-may be of Supported by the shutter is the.
any configuration or of'any design to convey the propermeaning. I
A spring 1% holds the shutter in closing position and the cable 15 is used to operate the shutter having one end connected tov the shutter and the other end to the foot pedal or any other element of the automobile. The construction shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7-1s practically identical with that just described which the light rays fromthe bulb may be passed rearwardly and this opening 16 is normally closed by asecond shutter 17 oper ated by a separate cable'l8. i
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that the bulb 4- is capable of passing light rays through lens 7 and through plate 9 and further through the open bottom 5 for illuminating the license plate. Upon manipulation of the foot pedal, the shutter 91 isthrown toa position to-uncover. plates and simultaneously move the display device 13 to displaying position. lVhen in such displaying position light rays from the bulb 14 will illuminatethe displaying device. r i
Quiteoften' it is anadvantage in backing to illuminate behind the automobile and this be understood that the design of the various parts and manner of associating the same may be changed in various ways and'the'refore I do not desire to be limitedin any manner except bythe my invention,
ment will be iindisplaying position and receiving light rays from the bulb tl'irough said opening.
2. An automobile signaling device comprising a housing having an extension provided With slots and an opening at the top, a red lens supported by the housing, a display plate carried by the housing above said lens, a shutter for covering and uncoveringsaid plate and pivoted to said housing, a socket carried by said shutter, a display element removably supported by said socket and a foot pedal control cable connected to said shutter.
8. An automobile signaling device coinprising a housing having an extension provided with slots and an opening at the top, a red lens supported by the housing, a display plate carried by the housing above said lens, a shutter for covering and uncovering said plate and pivoted to said housing, a socket carried by said shutter, a display element reinovably supported by said socket and a foot pedal control cable connected to said shutter and a second shutter for covering and uncovering a second opening in said housing.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
THOMAS E. THOMPSON.
