Description
R. S. ONEIL. ELECTRICAL INDICATING DEVICE;
APPLICATION FILED MAR 1. 1920.
1 374,948, Patented Apr 19, 1921.
PATENT OFFICE.
RODOLPH STU-ART ONEIL, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
ELECTRICAL INDICATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 19, 1921.
Application filed March 1, 1920. Serial No. 362,418.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, RonoLrH STUART ONniL, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Indicating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electrical indiating devices, and has particular reference to indicators for use in apparatus for signaling the position of a ships helm. Although regarded as useful in other signaling systems it is particularly advantageous in systems such as that disclosed in the specification of my application.
The invention consists of an indicator comprising a casing having a single display opening, a single illuminating device behind said opening, magnetically operated color screens adapted to be pro-selected for interposition between the illuminating device and the display'opening, and electromagnctically operated indicating disks adapted to be pro-selected and interposed between the color screen in operative position and the display opening whereby a pro-selected indication in a pro-selected color is displayed.
The invention is illustrated diagrammatically in the accompanying drawing which is a sectional diagram.
The invention bears'some resemblance to that described in my application for Letters Patent of the United States, filed Mar. 1, 1920 Serial number 362,418, in that electic-magnetically operated disks are employed and are in operation interposed between an illuminating device and a display opening but it differs from it in that instead of employing separate lamps to give various color indications I propose to employ single white light and obtain the de sired color effects by interposing pre-selected color screens by tion. a
This will be understood upon reference to the drawing wherein the numeral 1 desighates the illuminating device or lamp and 2 electro-magnetic operaplied to them the figures or other indications' it is desired to display. They are operated by the magnets 8 which when energized attract armatures 9 and through the links 10 move the disk into operative display position. The arrangement is precisely similar to that described in my com panion application of even date and the operation is also similar except that as before described whenever \the helm is on either side of the central position the light 1 is illuminated and one or other of the color screens 2 and 3according to whether the rudder has moved boardis interposed between the lamp 1 and the display opening 7.
Although I have described my invention in its application to helm. signaling, it will be understood that it may be applied to other indicators.
l hat I claim and ters Patent.
An electrical indicator comprising a casing having a single display opening, a single illuminating device behind said opening, magnetically operated color screens adapted to be preselected for interposition between the illuminating device and the display opening, and electro-magnetically operated indicating disks having indicia and adapted to be preselected and interposed be tween the color screen in operative positionand the display opening whereby a pre-selected indication in a pro-selected color is displayed, substantially as specified.
In Witness whereof I afiixmy signature.
BODOLPH STUART ONEIL.
