E. TERHUNE AIR FILTER Filed August '20, 1925 A TTOR NE YS WITNESSES i so Patented Feb. 16, 1926. I
UNITED ,STATES.
ROYAL E. TERI-LURE, OI. CLIFTON, NEW
AIR FILTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROYAL E. TEBHUNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident )f Clifton, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Air Filter, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in fitering devices, and it pertains particularly to a filtering device especially adapted for filtering air taken 'into carbureters of internal COIIlbllStiOIl motors.
It is one of the primary objects of the ini vention to provide means for filtering the air taken into the intake pipe of internal combustion motor carbureters in order to insure a cleaner mixture of combustible charge.
It is a further object of the invention to construct the filter in such a manner "that the several parts thereof are readily removable for the pn "ose of renewal or cleaning. It is a still urther-object ofthe invention to construct the device in such a man-- ner that all air entering the carbureter will be caused to pass through the filtering elements, thus insuring a complete filteringfof theain f lVith the above and other objects in. view, reference is had to the accompanving drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation partly in section, of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention; r Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof taken on theline 2-2 of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a. transverse sectional yiew taken on the line '33 of-Fig; 1. f Referring more particularl to the drawin 's, the device comprises .a ousing 5 having open oppositely-disposed sidesfi. The
housing is preferably" in the form of a cast metal box having a tubular extension on thimble 7 at one end and an integral lug 8 at the opposite end, said integral lug '8 be ing provided with aperforation or opening 9.
,The open sidesiof the box lilie member. ,1 are each defined by an inwardly pro ectmg a, seat 11 extending en-" we flange 10, formin' tirely around eac f the open sides,-and
said sides are adapted to receive or support a ,the filtering elements 11.. ';These filtering elements are formed of s'uitab purpose '0 le. porous material and "are formed with openings 12 located in such a manner that asthe filtering elements are positioned on the flanges 10, the openings in (one of the elements will be vopposite the openings in the other element in order that bolts 13 may be passed therethrough for the purpose of securing the filtering elements 1n position.
The tubular extension or thimble 7 is internally screw-threaded as at 14 for the purpose of receiving a pipe 15, which isconnected to the carbureter (not shown),
and adjacent the tubular extension 7 a plurality of openings 15 are provided, the
f which will be here 'nafter described, and this thimble is forlne by gradw ally contractingthe bog: along gentle curve stream lines, as clearly s own in Fig; 1.
The device is adapted. to be supported in place by means of bolts hr the like, which pass through the openin s lfipand the open- 1n 9 in the lug 8. he pi 15 having be 11 connected to the air inta e of the carbureter in any desired manner, as the motor is started air will be drawn through vthe filtering elements 11 into the interior of the box-like member 5, and bymeans of the pipe 15 will pass to the 'carbur'ete'r'.
vWhen it is desired to clean-the device, it
may be removed and air or fluid under pres-i sure may be-forced into the. box-like member 5, a'ndin passing outwardly through the sides of thebox.
It will be noted that posed between the flange 10 and gaskets 20 are inter- 1 the re-. 9
as v
filtering elements 11', will remove all. foreign matter from the exterior thereof.
and to form an. air-tight connection between nd theflange' and, 9
the filtering elements insure all air passing through the filtering elements. 5
My object in shaping the tubular .extn
sion or thimble 7,. as herein disclosed "is that by such construction a stream line ow of'filtered air from the plates 11. to the exit end .of the filter is assured; this in;- creas'es the .eflicieney ofth'efdevice' as such flow allows a smooth undisturbed transmission of the filtered air away from the plates 11" without any friction.
, disposed open sides, a straight shoulder, de-
finin each of said open sides, said shoulders each eing set within the box and spaced relative to the defining edge 'of its respective open side, a gasket carried by eachof said shpulders, a filtering element mounted in each of said open sides and with the gaskets adapted to form a closure theref or, and v spaced apart bolts passing through the said filtering elements to regulate their-tension' and maintain them in position on the gasketed shoulders of the housing, and a ltered air outlet thimble at one end of said housing, said thimble consisting of a tubular extension having a stream-line bore communicating directly with the space between said filtering elements.
