THU-1L, a citizen-of the United :States, and a resident of Cincinnati; in the county of Hamilton 6 and State. of Ohio, have inventeducertain new and useful Improvements in Printing- Plate. It is theobjeet of my. invention to provide. 39 a structure'for the indicated purpose WhiChw operates Without pivot pins, and has a jaw which slides in a line parallel with the surface of the press bed. It is also my object to provide a simple and very eftective hold down device,- which retains the can'ier eles' ment of the structure Within a pressbed hole, removably, but very firmly, and in an automatic manner, permitting a close fitof'the' carrier to the press bed hole.

The channel for the spring'is deeper cut into the: base where the crossshapcd closure is placed overit, and. a hole-8 is drilled downzthrough the high portionof the inclined-plane ofthe base, into the channel sothat an. instrumentcan be inserted through the hole, and the spring pusl ed outwardly of the passageway in which it lies, thereby retracting the ends, so that the; carrier canbe lifted out.
The uprights of the carrier are formed with channels 9, 9, for guides for the jaw. The jawis formed. with the usualhead 10, and. with a slide block .11 engaging in said channels, so that the jaw is held slidably in the carrier with a movement parallel, with the bed. L
A left hand threaded socket 12 is formed in the slide block, into which extends a hole 13 from the top of the jaw so that the adjusting. screw within the socketis available-for turning through the top of the jaw. A Wedge element l4 is provided. which is adapted to slide on the inclined plane of the base. It fits snugly but slidably between the uprights of the carrier and has a right hand socket 15 for the screw. The screw 16 may have a button head 1'7 on its lower end to prevent its removal from the wedge during operation of the deviceand to keep the wedge and jaw slide block together at all times so that the wedges do not becomev the device can be thrust down into place. i
The base and sides of the carrier may fit the hole snugly but slidably, as the spring ends when inserting and removing the device are completely within the confines of the wall of the base of the carrier.
In use a tool is inserted through the aw head, and thescrew is turned, which results in the wedge riding down theincline and thereby thrusting the jaw toward the printing plate to be held on the bed, said jaw 'nioving'in the plane of the bed. The engagement of the jaw with the plate is very firm, as the slide block may fit the guides in the carrier snugly andthe screw, being right and left hand threaded acts very rapidly, and can have a pitch which prevents the ogging loose of tight engagement, while Jerm'ittin ver ra aid clam oin ad'ustinent.
Reverse turning of the screw will release the jaw, whereupon the carrier can be lifted out, by means of pulling the spring ends out of engagement, as has been described:
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and'desire to secure by Let-' ters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a carrier, having a body to fit in an aperture in a press bed,
a aw held movably in the carrier, the carrier having an inclined base and the jaw providedwith a wedge for engagement with the inclined base of the carrier, and means for adjusting said wedge and incline engagement to alter the position of the jaw and carrier.
2. In a device of the character described,

available for operation, and a wedge on the screw and held between the uprights, where by turning of the screw will force the wedge along the incline, and the relative positions of jaw and carrier will be altered, for the purpose described. i
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a carrier having an inclined base and uprights, a jaw .having a body of the carrier.

In a device ofthe character described, the combination with a carrier having an inclined base and uprights, a jaw having a bearingblock slidably supported in a horizontal plane in the uprights,.a wedge for engagement with the incline, and means for adjustably carrying the wedge on the jaw, said means comprising a screw engaging in the jaw, and available for turning, said screw being engagedalsoin the wedge.
In a device of the character described, the combination with a carrier having an inclined base anduprights, a jaw having a bearing block slidably supported in a horizontal plane in the uprights, a wedge for engagementv ith the incline, and means for adjustably carrying the wedge on the jaw, said means comprising a screw engaging in the jaw with a thread in one direction, and available for turning, and a threaded socket in the wedge, said screw having threads formed in the other direction for engaging in said wedge, for the purpose described;
6. In a device of the character described, a carrier having a body to fitan aperture in a press bed, said bed having an enlargement at the under end thereof for forming a holdends into engagement with the shoulder, and
an aperture through the carrier within which the spring is partly located, said carrier having mounting means for the spring to permit a tool to be inserted through the aperture, for retracting the spring so as to remove said ends from engagement.
7. In a device of the character described, a carrier having a body to fit an aperture in a press bed, said bed having an enlargement at the under end thereof for forming a holddown shoulder around the aperture, a channel in the carrier, a spring mounted within the channel, and having portions tending to expand so as to engage under said shoulder, means closing the channel, so as to confine the spring intern iediate said portions, against expansion, and an aperture through the carrier extending into said confined portion thereof, for insertion of a tool to withdraw the spring portions into the confines oithe EMIL E.
